Hi,
My Norton started popping up the other day with a warning about a packed.generic200 virus. I ran Spybot and MBAM and SAS, still coming up. Then it pops up with a warning about Win32.TDSSrtk backdoor. I immediately changed all passwords from another computer and have not been using the infected one. Here is my log, I am hoping to avoid formatting but am getting really worried if this computer is compromised for good. Thanks in advance for help!

Hi co-bikeman, welcome to the forum.

To make cleaning this machine easier
  • Please do not uninstall/install any programs unless asked to
It is more difficult when files/programs are appearing in/disappearing from the logs.
  • Please do not run any scans other than those requested
  • Please follow all instructions in the order posted
  • All logs/reports, etc.. must be posted in Notepad. Please ensure that word wrap is unchecked. In notepad click format, uncheck word wrap if it is checked.
  • Do not attach any logs/reports, etc.. unless specifically requested to do so.
  • If you have problems with or do not understand the instructions, Please ask before continuing.
  • Please stay with this thread until given the All Clear. A absence of symptoms does not mean a clean machine.

Download the GMER Rootkit Scanner. Unzip it to your Desktop.

Before scanning, make sure all other running programs are closed and no other actions like a scheduled antivirus scan will occur while the scan is being performed. Do not use your computer for anything else during the scan.

Double-click gmer.exe. The program will begin to run.

**Caution**
These types of scans can produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any
"<— ROOKIT" entries unless advised!

If possible rootkit activity is found, you will be asked if you would like to perform a full scan.
  • Click NO
  • In the right panel, you will see a bunch of boxes that have been checked … leave everything checked and ensure the Show all box is un-checked.
  • Now click the Scan button.
Once the scan is complete, you may receive another notice about rootkit activity.
  • Click OK.
  • GMER will produce a log. Click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "GMER.txt"
  • Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop.
Post the contents of GMER.txt in your next reply.

Next

Please download DDS and save it to your desktop.
  • Disable any script blocking protection
  • Double click dds.scr to run the tool.
  • When done, DDS.txt will open.
  • Click Yes at the next prompt for Optional Scan.
  • Save both reports to your desktop.
—————————————————

Please include the contents of the following in your next reply:

DDS.txt

Please attach the second file; Attach.txt. To attach a file, do the following:
  • Under the reply panel is the Attachments Panel
  • Browse for the attachment file you want to upload, then click the green Upload button
  • Once it has uploaded, click the Manage Current Attachments drop down box
  • Click on [external image: Posted Image] to insert the attachment into your post

Please post back with the GMER log and both DDS logs.

Thanks
Whew! Glad to hear from you! OK, I hope I've done all this correctly. The GMER screen didn't quite match how you described it, but it did run a scan. Not sure how to disable script blocking. I Googled it and found info about turning it off in Norton Antivirus, but couldn't find any reference in the Internet Security that I am running. So if I need to redo just let me know. Thanks so much for your help, hope I got this right.

Bikeman

Hi co-bikeman,

A rootkit wasn't found, that's a good thing.

You have a program that will ned to be disabled untill we are finished.

SPYBOT TEATIMER
  • Launch Spybot S&D, go to the Mode menu and make sure "Advanced Mode" is selected.
  • On the left hand side, click on Tools, then click on the Resident Icon in the list.
  • Uncheck the "Resident "TeaTimer" (Protection of overall system settings) active." box.
  • Click on the "System Startup" icon in the List
  • Uncheck the "TeaTimer" box and "OK" any prompts.
  • If Teatimer gives you a warning that changes were made, click the "Allow Change" box when prompted.
  • Exit Spybot S&D when done.
  • (When we are done, you can re-enable Teatimer using the same steps but this time place a check next to "Resident TeaTimer" and check the "TeaTimer" box in System Startup.]

You must also disable your antivirus program before running this next tool. Please read through the instructions to familiarize yourself with what to expect when combofix runs.

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. Note: If you are having difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, or are unsure as to what programs need to be disabled, please refer to the information available through this link : How to Disable your Security Programs
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts. Close all browsers/windows first.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[external image: Posted Image]

Click on Yes to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Notes:

1.Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
3. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you – please tell your helper.
4. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

Please post back with the combofix log and a new HJT log. How is the computer at the moment?

Thanks
Good Morning,
OK, got ComboFix to run per your instructions. Here's the log for it and HJT. Looking forward to your analysis. Computer is slow to boot up, has a strange blank white area on my desktop with a red X box in the upper LH corner that will not go away, can't be moved.

bikeman

Next you have a program that is cluttering up your registry and using resouces Logitech Desktop Messenger. This program is unrequired and may cause conflicts. You java is very old and vulnerable. We will deal with both of these at the same time.

  • Go to http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp
  • Scroll down to "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 14
  • Click the download button on the right.
If Information Bar pop-ups up, right-click on it and say it's OK to display the blocked content.

  • Accept the license agreement, click continue.
You do not have to install the Java Web Start ActiveX Control

When the download is complete, close your browser.

J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03
Logitech Desktop Messenger

Do not uninstall Java TM 6 Update 14 if found! :yeah:

Reboot your computer.

  • Double-click on the saved file (jre-6u14-windows-i586-p.exe) to install the update.
  • Delete the downloaded installation file after completing the above procedure and reboot if not prompted to do so.

Next, clear the java cache

To clear the Java Plug-in cache:
  • Click Start > Control Panel.
  • Double-click the Java icon (it looks like a coffee cup) in the control panel.
  • On the General tab, Click Settings under Temporary Internet Files.

  • check all 3 boxes
  • Click OK

Open hijackthis, do a system scan only and checkmark these lines, if present

Close ALL other windows/browsers and click Fix Checked. Answer Yes if prompted. Close HJT.

Reboot and obtain and post a new HJT log.

Thanks

Successfully did all of the above. Here is the new HJT logfile. Still have the blank spot on my desktop. If I roll my cursor over it in one spot it says "Download and install the updates now" and "Continue what I was doing and download later". Wonder if it is a Windows update??

Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2

Hi Where on your desktop is this located? If it located right on the desktop you should be able to right click it, select properties. On the general tab you should be able to see what the file name is. If it's on the system tray near the clock, it could be SAS and the icon didn't load. Do you have SAS set to automatically check for updates? There are a few other security programs that give you the same options as you posted when you hover over their System Tray icon. Let us know it's location. Thanks
It is located right above the clock. I went ahead and clicked on where it says update and it is/was SAS. It downloaded something and went away. We'll see if it stays away or not upon rebooting. FYI–I ran another MBAM. It identified two unknown trojans, which it deleted. Ran Spybot, it came out clean.
Hi co-bikeman,

I thought it may have been SAS.

Could you please post the last MBAM log? Open MBAM, click the logs tab. Click on the most recent log to highlight it, then Click the Open button.

Then

You will need to use Internet Explorer for this scan.
*Note
It is recommended to disable onboard antivirus program and antispyware programs while performing scans so there are no conflicts and it will speed up scan time.
Please don't go surfing while your resident protection is disabled!
Once the scan is finished remember to re-enable your antivirus along with your antispyware programs.

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.
  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions.
  • You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button
    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
    • Archives
    • Mail databases
  • Click on My Computerr under Scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As….
  • Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt)
  • Set the Save In to Desktop
  • click the Save button.
  • Please post this log in your next reply along with a new DDS log. (HJT has shown us all it will show us)

Thanks
I'll get on this new scan. I goofed, it was SAS that caught two unknown trojans. There doesn't appear to be a logfile on SAS, but I looked under quarantined items on that scan and it shows these: C:\SYSTEM VOLUME INFORMATION\_RESTORE{46DE8927-ID39-44D2-A9E9-6411926F211}\RP918\AO177681.exe and C:\WINDOWS\PEV.EXE SAS supposedly deleted both. Working on the scan.

Hi co-bikeman,

SAS is detecting an infected System Restore point. The old restore points will be removed when we clean up the tools.

Any problems? If not we can clean up the tools we used.

Now lets uninstall GMER:
  • Copy the entire contents of the Code Box below to Notepad.
  • Name the file as gmer_uninstall.bat
  • Change the Save as Type to All Files
  • and Save it in the folder where GMER.exe was saved
  • Once saved, double click on the gmer_uninstall.bat file. a MSDOS window will be displayed. That is normal.
Do Not copy the word CODE

@echo off
sc stop gmer
sc delete gmer
if exist %SystemRoot%\System32\drivers\gmer.sys del /f /q %SystemRoot%\System32\drivers\gmer.sys
if exist %SystemRoot%\gmer.dll del /f /q %SystemRoot%\gmer.dll
if exist %SystemRoot%\gmer.exe del /f /q %SystemRoot%\gmer.exe
if exist %SystemRoot%\gmer.ini del /f /q %SystemRoot%\gmer.ini
if exist %SystemRoot%\gmer_uninstall.cmd del /f /q %SystemRoot%\gmer_uninstall.cmd
if exist %SystemRoot%\gmer.bat del /f /q %SystemRoot%\gmer.bat
if exist %SystemRoot%\gmer.reg del /f /q %SystemRoot%\gmer.reg
if exist %SystemRoot%\gmer.log del /f /q %SystemRoot%\gmer.log
rd /s /q gmer
del /f /q gmer_uninstall.bat
exit

From your desktop, please delete if present
  • any notepads/logs that we created
  • GMER.zip
  • GMER.exe

Next

Click the Start button, click Run. Copy and paste the following line into the run box and click OK
Combofix /u

I suggest you keep MBAM. Keep MBAM updated and use it regularly as an on demand scanner.

Updates and upgrades

You have an older version of Adobe Reader. You can download the current version HERE

You may want to consider Foxit Reader instead. It may be a bit lighter on resources.

Visit their support forum
Foxit Forum

In either case you should uninstall Adobe Reader 8.1.2 first. Be sure to move any PDF documents to another folder first though.

Some Recommendations and prevention tips

Basic security consists of 1 antivirus program, 1 resident antispyware program, 1 on demand antispyware program and a firewall. You have those all ready.

You should also use Spyware Blaster to help immunize your computer.

- SpywareBlaster will add a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer
settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.
