I have a problem here thats driving me crazy. I recently figured out that the actiontec m1000 modem I have from qwest is also a router. I also have a linksys wireless router and both were running as routers, but now I have the actiontec as my main router and am just using the linksys as a WAP. Some days my web browsing has been brought to a crawl where I'm having to reload pages 4-5 times just to get them to load at all. I know the problem is my roomate who downloads things but since he pays for part of the internet he refuses to keep them to downloading at night. When I had the linksys running as a router I had set up priorities for web browsing and email over all other types of traffic. I went to try and set up the priorities again with the actiontec but its very different from the linksys and I can't find much of any documentation. Against my best judgment I called qwest to see if they could help and surprise surprise they couldn't and advised me to called actiontec. Actiontec won't even let me talk to a person without lying and saying I bought the router from bestbuy less than a year ago and once I was speaking with a person I was promptly hung up on when they figured out what modem/router I was talking about. I was wondering if anyone could help me out.
I want to set priorities so all web browsing and email will have priority over my selfish roomates torrenting. I have to reload pages 4 and 5 times some days which makes browsing the web not worth it. I had it set up before and it helped the situation.
I've asked some of the other folks here to take a look at this to see if they can help.
I'll continue to monitor in case I can help or find any useful information I can provide.
Somescarygirl,
Would you be able to place a router between your actiontec modem and your home networked computers.
That would make it possible for you to use the Router Setup to make QoS Settings.
It seems that Actiontec doesn't do a very good job of it.
Somescarygirl,
If your roomate is gaining access directly via the actiontec, and your router is only between the actiontec and your own personal machine(s), then you are gaining no advantage except WPA for your machine(s)
However, if your roommate is agreeable to having the Router placed after the actiontec (which would then act solely as a "modem")
Then you can use the Router Settings to set Priorities.
The problem with the actiontec is while it is a router it only has one port on it which is stupid, I know. Sooo that means the one port on the actiontec is then connected to the linksys which is set in transparent bridge mode so its routing capabilities do not interfere with that of the actiontex which was causing problems before. We fixed that and now both my roomate and I are on wired connections coming from the linksys and my other roomates are using the wireless. So basically I have to do it through the actiontec.
