I cannot install or uninstall any programs on our laptop. I tried to download HJT but could not install it. I tried to use the zip version, but my post was rejected because the HJT version was old. The link for the zip download version 2 does not point to anything.

Where can I start?

I figured out how to open windows in safe mode and I was able to successfully able to install HJT. Here is the log:

Please note that all instructions given are customised for this computer only, the tools used may cause damage if used on a computer with different infections.

If you think you have similar problems, please post a log in the HJT forum and wait for help.

Hi starkitten and welcome to What the Tech :)

I'm Dakeyras and I am going to try to assist you with your problem. Please take note of the below:
  • I will start working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine!.
  • The process is not instant. Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine is clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
  • Refrain from running self fixes as this will hinder the malware removal process.
  • It may prove beneficial if you print of the following instructions or save them to notepad as I post them.
  • Your security programs may give warnings for some of the tools I will ask you to use. Be assured, any links I give are safe.
Vista Advice:

All applications I ask to be used will require to be run in Administrator mode. IE: Right click on and select Run as Administrator.

The Operating System(Vista aka Windows 6) in use comes with a inbuilt utility called User Access Control(UAC) when prompted by this with anything I ask you to do carry out please select the option Allow.

Your machine is also missing a vital Service Pack, do not be alarmed OK, this is more for your information and we will address this when I give the all clear. Do not install it until I ask you to.

Next:

All of the below should be carried out in Normal Mode not Safe Mode OK

Please download Rooter.exe to your desktop.
  • Right click on Rooter.exe and select Run as Administrator to start the application.
  • A Notepad file containing the report will open, also found at %systemdrive%\Rooter.txt.
  • Post the contents of Rooter.txt in your next reply.
Next:

Please download to your desktop DDS from one of the links below:

Link1
Link2
Link3
  • Disable any script blocker then right click on DDS and select Run as Administrator to start the application.
  • A black Screen will open, just read the contents and do nothing.
  • When the tool finish it will open 2 reports.
  • Copy/paste both reports back here and remove DDS from your desktop.
Note: Two logfiles will be generated with Notepad: DDS.txt and Attach.txt

When completed the above, please post back the following:
  • Any problems encountered and or further symptoms?
  • Rooter Log.
  • Both DDS logs. <– Post them individually please. IE: one Log per post/reply.
The actual owner became impatient because of an online class starting on 6/1 and told me that there was nothing she needed on the computer so we just did a full system restore on 5/31. I really am not a computer person, so I feel like I need to ask if it would still be advised to run HTJ and post the results here? I wouldn't want the problem to pop back up later thinking we actually fixed anything. Thanks for the reply.
Hi :)

Thank you for informing myself of the situation, by all means I am willing to check a new HijackThis log.

full system restore on 5/31.

Do you mean either a Reformat and Reinstallation of the Windows operating system or did you perform a rollback using System Restore to a earlier date?
Hi :)

a reinstall/ restore to factory condition

Ah, thank you for the clarification. Below is some advice on what to do after carrying out such. Otherwise your friends computer should be good to go but if any reservations by all means post a new HiJackThis log OK

Reformat and Reinstallation Advice:

  • Use an Anti Virus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.
Here are some free Anti Virus programs which I recommend to use:
    • Antivir PersonalEditionClassic
      • Free anti-virus software for Windows.
      • Detects and removes more than 50,000 viruses. Free support.
    • avast! 4 Home Edition
        • Anti-virus program for Windows.
        • The home edition is freeware for noncommercial users.
    • Update your Anti Virus Software - It is imperative that you update your Anti virus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your anti virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
    • Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.
Here are some free Firewalls which I recommend to use:
(Use only one, and disable your Windows Firewall)
Note: Only ever have installed/use one Anti-Virus application and Software Firewall. Otherwise a system conflict will occur and this also lessens overall online protection!

  • Keep your system updated-Microsoft releases patches for Windows and other products regularly:
  • Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
    • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    • Click once on the Security tab
    • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    • Click once on the Custom Level button.
      • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      • Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware - Download it from here
The tutorial on how to use MBAM is located here
  • Install WinPatrol - Download it from here
You can find information about how WinPatrol works here
  • Install SpywareBlaster - SpywareBlaster will added a large list of programs and sites into your Internet Explorer settings that will protect you from running and downloading known malicious programs.
    Download it from here
The tutorial on how to use Spyware Blaster is located here
  • Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.
Follow this list and your potential for your friends computer becoming infected again will reduce dramatically.
