CatByte helped me the other day and all was well. Before i got a chance to do the recommendations on protecting the computer in the basement, my husband told me that he was getting a re direction on searches on yahoo search again. i was able to do a system restore successfully and then inputed the recommendations that catbyte listed such as spyware blaster, spywareguard, atf cleaner , erunt, etc.
Then i ran malwarebytes and that vandu trojan was listed; which i removed.
So now i am wondering if all if ok. please look at the hijack log when you can:

Hi pfilighera , welcome to the forum.

To make cleaning this machine easier
  • Please do not uninstall/install any programs unless asked to
It is more difficult when files/programs are appearing in/disappearing from the logs.
  • Please do not run any scans other than those requested
  • Please follow all instructions in the order posted
  • All logs/reports, etc.. must be posted in Notepad. Please ensure that word wrap is unchecked. In notepad click format, uncheck word wrap if it is checked.
  • Do not attach any logs/reports, etc.. unless specifically requested to do so.
  • If you have problems with or do not understand the instructions, Please ask before continuing.
  • Please stay with this thread until given the All Clear. A absence of symptoms does not mean a clean machine.

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

Do Not run combofix more than once. If it fails to run, please post back for further instructions.

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. Note: If you are having difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, or are unsure as to what programs need to be disabled, please refer to the information available through this link : How to Disable your Security Programs
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

[external image: Posted Image]

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[external image: Posted Image]

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Notes:

1.Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
3. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you – please tell your helper.
4. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

Please make an uninstall list
  • Start HijackThis
  • Click the Config button
  • Click the Misc Tools button
  • Click the Open Uninstall Manager button.
  • Click the Save list button and save it to your desktop.
When you press Save, a notepad will open with the contents. Copy/paste the contents of the notepad file in your next reply.

Please post back with
  • combofix log
  • unintsall list
  • new HJ log taken last.
Please discribe your computer's behavior a the moment. Are the redirects in both Firefox and Internet Explorer?

Thanks
The uninstall list is followed by the hijack list and then the combo list, but i did do the logs in the order that you asked (i did the hijack log last)

My spouse tells me that the computer is a little slow, but there is no redirects nor any other symptoms right now. And, thank you for your help. We appreciate it a lot.
Hi pfilighera,

LimeWire
You have LimeWire , a P2P/file sharing program installed on your computer. P2P applications like it are the largest source of malware we see. You'll be doing yourself a favor by removing it.

References for the risk of these programs can be found in these links:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/commun…protection.mspx

http://www.internetworldstats.com/articles…cles/art053.htm

I would recommend that you uninstall LimeWire , however that choice is up to you. If you choose to remove these programs, you can do so via Control Panel >> Add or Remove Programs.

If you wish to keep it, please do not use it until your computer is cleaned.

Let's have a deeper look

Download the GMER Rootkit Scanner. Unzip it to your Desktop.

Before scanning, make sure all other running programs are closed and no other actions like a scheduled antivirus scan will occur while the scan is being performed. Do not use your computer for anything else during the scan.

Double-click gmer.exe. The program will begin to run.

**Caution**
These types of scans can produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any
"<— ROOKIT" entries unless advised!

If possible rootkit activity is found, you will be asked if you would like to perform a full scan.
  • Click NO
  • In the right panel, you will see a bunch of boxes that have been checked … leave everything checked and ensure the Show all box is un-checked.
  • Now click the Scan button.
Once the scan is complete, you may receive another notice about rootkit activity.
  • Click OK.
  • GMER will produce a log. Click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "GMER.txt"
  • Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop.
Post the contents of GMER.txt in your next reply.

Thanks
I had a tough time with this scan as the directions didn't quite follow what was on the screen but i hope it's what you need. Please let me know if i should redo your instructions. Thanks, P

Hi pfilighera,

Thanks, I will check the canned instructions.

I don't see anything in the GMER log.

Your java is out of date. Click your start button, open Control panel.
  • Locate the Java icon (it looks like a coffee cup)
  • double click it to open it
  • click the Update tab
  • Click update now

After the java is updated, reboot your computer if not prompted to.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Under Main choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browser
  • Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

If you use Opera browser
  • Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Note your computer may boot a little slower the first couple of times.

We'll do a Kaspersky scan just to be sure there is no malware present.

You will need to use Internet Explorer for this scan.
*Note
It is recommended to disable onboard antivirus program and antispyware programs while performing scans so there are no conflicts and it will speed up scan time.
Please don't go surfing while your resident protection is disabled!
Once the scan is finished remember to re-enable your antivirus along with your antispyware programs.

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.
  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions.
  • You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button
    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
    • Archives
    • Mail databases
  • Click on My Computerr under Scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As….
  • Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt)
  • Set the Save In to Desktop
  • click the Save button.
  • Please post this log in your next reply along with a new HijackThis log.

Thanks
Help! As i was following your directions, i got to the point where i was going to kaspersky on line but i can't get online. i get the message that windows cannot connect to the internet using http, (port80),etc. it also says it might have something to do with the firewall settings. How do i fix this so i can run a kaspersky scan?
Hi Make sure Zone Alarm is allowing Internet Explorer access to the internet. The file for Internet Explorer is iexplore.exe If you have had a recent update the file may have changed. Open Zone Alarm and select Program Control. Select the Programs tab. Make IE is set to allow
Hi, It is set to allow but still can't get on the internet. Also, strange that even though we haven't been able to get on the internet for a day, zone alarm keeps alerting us that it has quarantined objects such as trojan win32.tdss. Please advise. Thank you, P
Hi pfilighera,

Depending on the location of the detection, it may be a file we have all ready quarantined. What is the full file path of the detection?

Zone Alarm used to have a habit of getting amnesia and forgetting what was allowed. Try removing Internet Explorer from the list. Then try to connect, ZA should ask for permission for IE, click yes.

If the above works, please download and run DDS and post the logs.

If you still cannot connect, download DDS to another computer and transfer it to the problem one. Then transfer the logs back to the clean computer and post them.

If you use another computer for file transfer and use a flashdrive please use this utility first to protect the drive and the clean computer.

Download Flash_Disinfector.exe by sUBs and save it to your desktop.
  • Double-click Flash_Disinfector.exe to run it and follow any prompts that may appear.
  • The utility may ask you to insert your flash drive and/or other removable drives including your mobile phone. Please do so and allow the utility to clean up those drives as well.
  • Wait until it has finished scanning and then exit the program.
Note: Flash_Disinfector will create a hidden folder named autorun.inf in each partition and every USB drive plugged in when you ran it. Don't delete this folder…it will help protect your drives from future infection.

Here are the instructions for DDS

Please download DDS and save it to your desktop.
  • Disable any script blocking protection
  • Double click dds.scr to run the tool.
  • When done, DDS.txt will open.
  • Click Yes at the next prompt for Optional Scan.
  • Save both reports to your desktop.
—————————————————

Please include the contents of the following in your next reply:

DDS.txt

Please attach the second file; Attach.txt. To attach a file, do the following:
  • Under the reply panel is the Attachments Panel
  • Browse for the attachment file you want to upload, then click the green Upload button
  • Once it has uploaded, click the Manage Current Attachments drop down box
  • Click on [external image: Posted Image] to insert the attachment into your post

Thanks
I can't get on the internet , so i copied dds to a cdr, and then brought it downstairs to the sick computer, and then ran the scans. I then had to put the files back on the cd and bring them back up to the well computer in order to send them to you. I hope this is ok, helpful tech (it feels wrong to call u oldman). Hi pfilighera,

it feels wrong to call u oldman

Don't worry about it. B)

Since you are transfering files, this will probably be the easiest.

On the infected computer

Open hijackthis, do a system scan only and checkmark these lines, if present

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyServer = http=localhost:7171
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyOverride = *.local;

Close ALL other windows/browsers and click Fix Checked. Answer Yes if prompted. Close HJT.

You should be able to connect now.

Then locate combofix.exe on your desktop, right click it and select delete. Download a new copy and run it with the instructions I posted earlier.

Please post that log.

Thanks
Well, OM, that was pretty amazing. The internet is back! I did the combofix log as requested:
