My PC has been infected with "Malware Doctor". Whoever created this malware succeeded in being a nuisance of greatest proportions. I am NOT very well versed with PCs. I know emough to get by, but I do have Malwarebyte's anti-malware loaded on my PC. I updated all the files associated with Malwarebyte's anit-malware and attempted to run a Quick Scan. The scan stopped after 10 seconds and locked my PC. I performed a search on Malware Doctor to see what it was all about. That brings me to What The Tech for assistance. I had a problem last month that Essexboy helped me out with. If all of you are as efficient and as knowledgeable, I know I'm in good hands. Please help. I am running in WIndows XP SP2. I've attached my HijackThis log.

Unfortunately your log shows entries linked to an infection called Virut. This particular nasty, and it is nasty, is what is called a polymorphic file infecter and it pretty much points to the death of this particular installation of Windows. Virut injects malicious code into legitimate files so that its instructions will be carried out each time the legitimate file is run, and it changes these instructions sufficiently that, although the same results occur, their detection by scanners is much more difficult. The best advice I can give is to back up any important files, apart from .exe and .scr files which may already be infected, and then reformat and reinstall your Operating System. I suggest that you make these backups as soon as possible because Virut doesn't make a neat job of injecting its code, so that the infected filed become damaged in the process, and if it hits system files your OS may get borked and that will be that.
I'm sorry to hear this. Very sorry. The problem is manifesting itself only when I am accessing the internet. YOu are saying that this virus has infected the entire operating system? How can I ensure that my backups will not carry the virus to the drive that I am backiing them up to? You are absolutely positive that this IS the problem and there is no software or manual intervention that can be done?

YOu are saying that this virus has infected the entire operating system?

No, but it has the potential to do so. Until it hits vital system files the OS will still function, to a greater or lesser degree, but once it infects, and corrupts, something vital, then your OS is hosed.

How can I ensure that my backups will not carry the virus to the drive that I am backiing them up to?

Virut targets certain types of files, .exe .scr and script files (.PHP, .ASP, and .HTML), and these should be avoided when making backups.

You are absolutely positive that this IS the problem and there is no software or manual intervention that can be done?
