[Resolved] Anti Virus disabled - help please

As a result of downloading a suspect program my Kaspersky Anti Virusand Windows Vista Defender stopped updating. I have fixed the Kasperky updates by installing the latest version. 8.0565 I have also mannually updated Windows Defender. Runng deep scanns with both apps reveals no threats. However, Malwaebytes reports the following: I have also included a HiJack This file for reference. I assume I just need to pop into the registry to update the three Registry Data Items Infected: Your assistance would be appreciated:

My name is Tomk. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can take a while to research, so please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:

  • I will be working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for the issues on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two.

Then

  • Please re-run Malwarebytes.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected. <== Very Important
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.
  • Note: If you receive a notice that some of the items couldn't be removed, that they have been added to the delete on reboot list, please reboot (shut down your computer then restart it).
Also "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.

Hi Tomk, I am very grateful for your help and time Since my intial posting I have updated my registry to correct the following

All seems fine and I am not experiencing any apparent system problems. My main concern is what was it that caused my anti-virus and firewall to stop updating in the first place and is this still resident on my PC. I have followed your instructions and the results are posted below for your reference.

Let's try this:

ESET Online Scanner:

Note: You can use either Internet Explorer or Mozilla FireFox for this scan. You will however need to disable your current installed Anti-Virus, how to do so can be read here.

Vista users: You will need to to right-click on the either the IE or FF icon in the Start Menu or Quick Launch Bar on the Taskbar and select Run as Administrator from the context menu.

  • Please go here then click on: [external image: Posted Image]

    Note: If using Mozilla Firefox you will need to download esetsmartinstaller_enu.exe when prompted then double click on it to install.
    All of the below instructions are compatible with either Internet Explorer or Mozilla FireFox.

  • Select the option YES, I accept the Terms of Use then click on: [external image: Posted Image]
  • When prompted allow the Add-On/Active X to install.
  • Make sure that the option Remove found threats is NOT checked, and the option Scan archives is checked.
  • Now click on Advanced Settings and select the following:
    • Scan for potentially unwanted applications
    • Scan for potentially unsafe applications
    • Enable Anti-Stealth Technology
  • Now click on: [external image: Posted Image]
  • The virus signature database… will begin to download. Be patient this make take some time depending on the speed of your Internet Connection.
  • When completed the Online Scan will begin automatically.
  • Do not touch either the Mouse or keyboard during the scan otherwise it may stall.
  • When completed select Uninstall application on close if you so wish, make sure you copy the logfile first!
  • Now click on: [external image: Posted Image]
  • Use notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\ESET\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt.
  • Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic.

Note: Do not forget to re-enable your Anti-Virus application after running the above scan!

Tomk, many thanks for your reply; I am working on this. I have hit a couple of problems 1) I am having trouble disabling Windows Defender. The Administrator Option to "Use Windows Defender" is greyed out and therefore not available for selection. Group Policies? This PC is used exclusively by me. 2) Kaspersky is no problem as I can suspend protection using the option provided by the package 3) The link you provided for instructions to disable Anti Virus is not working, 404 error. Probably due to my ISP and the server I am logging onto. 4) I have over 3 Terabytes of data on my PC, so Eset is taking a long time to scan. It's also stalled after a couple of hours. I will persevere, but if you have any suggestions re diabling Defender please let me know. Cheers….

Tomk , I finally completed the scan having disabled windows defender by stopping the service via Admin tools: The scan results are as follows. I am happy to delete the following files once I have recieved your OK. With regard to the items listed in the recycle bin , these are not displayed in the bin and I will need your advice on how to remove them.   • Return to OTM, right click in the "Paste Instructions for Items to be Moved" window (under the yellow bar) and choose Paste.
  • Click the red Moveit! button.
  • Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar) to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy), and paste it in your next reply.

Note: If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes. Tomk, errr.. yes the infection does appear to be instigated by warez and cracked programs. I really can't understand how these programs got on my PC in the first place. Hopefully, this post will disuade readers not to download these types of files in the future. Following the embarrassment of posting the results of the first ESET scan I immediately deleted all the files, ran CC cleaner to removed any registry issues and then performed another ESET scan (3hrs). ESET reported that "No Threats had been found" which was good. However, I believe I have jumped the gun and should have waited for your reply before taking any further action - as stated in this sites guidance notes. I am hoping that this is not an issue? I have now followed your last set of instructions: the results of the OTM and Rooter apps are listed below: I did run the rooter app twice as I received a Windows - No Disk error messages and cancelled first time. Ques: 1) Should windows defender be disabled if I am running Kaspersky Anti Virus i.e. will this slow my computer down. 2.   • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools.   • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.


Notes:

1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.
3. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
4. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you – please tell your helper.
5. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

Tomk, having run comofix i have lost my internet connection even after 2 reboots,. I am using my phone 2 reply 2 u. Can you please advise. thanks John.F

Tomk, following my last message I performed a True Image Restore which was taken immediately prior to running CF. I am now able to connect to the internet via my PC. My previous message was sent via my mobile phone on which I have email and internet access.

To reiterate, having ran Combofix, the report listed below was displayed. Microsoft Windows Recovery Console was installed. Having saved the file for your reference, I then rebooted to restore my internet connection as detailed in the instructions in your post. The internet connect was not restored folowing two reboots, hence I resorted to my mobile phone to contact you and performed a full restore of the True Image - Image of my C:\drive .

Before running this process again, do you have any advice re enabling my internet connection.

  • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before following the steps below. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".

  • ComboFix will now run a scan on your system. It may reboot your system when it finishes. This is normal.

Hi Tomk, thanks for your prompt reply. Please forgive this lenghty reply. I am working on the premise that more information may help get to the bottom of this problem.

I have followed your latest instructions including copying the CFScript.txt file into the exe. The result of the CF scan is listed below. Following the completion of CF I saved the txt file and closed the window. I then checked my internet connection which was fine. I then rebooted and logged on. My internet connection no longer worked!. I have performed a restore of the C:\drive image using True image home as before andf it is now working.

Generally my computer is reasonably responsive, but has slowed down in the last few weeks. I have noted the folowing which may be of help

1) There has been an improvement since I disabled Windows Defender from performing Real Time Protection which appeared to be running alongside Kaspersky's Antivirus 2009. I am sure that I did not select this option. However, I recently installed the optional Windows Update "Group Policy Preference Client side" . This option may have been a default of the update. I no long have the ability to deselect the administrator option to "Use windows defender" as mentioned in a previous post.

2) Start-up time has been slow ( a lot of disc activity) but is improving - I guess this is down to AFT and CC Cleaner clearing Vista's prefetch data & temp files. Addtionally, I recently installed Datacolors Syderpro3 software (for which I have a license). This slowly loads up a profile during startup which is used to improve the color display of my screen for photo editing.

3) I recently installed ShellExView as I had been having problems with Explorer crashing. I beleived this to be a conflict with Context Menus. The ShellExView application has highlighted in red the Winzip entriesdue to the fact that file attributes are 'AR'. ShellExview recommends that these highlighted items be investigated in depth as they may be potential malware.

4) I also installed all the Vista Ultimate optional extras as I understand that these will no longer be available when Windows 7 is released. I haven't actually made use of any of these applications.

5) I also installed Microsoft Accounting package which is a large application which integrates with the Office suite.

6) Then of course the upgrade to Vistas SP2.

For the above reasons I have accepted a slowdown in Vista's startup. Have a good evening.

Fortune, I don't know much about most of the programs you have. Several of them will tax your rescources which will cause delayed startup and overall slowdown. I'm not sure why running ComboFix terminates your internet access. Please post a new HijackThis log and let me know any other symptoms you have noticed.
