I am having a series of issues with DEP. I was working with another person in the removal of spyware on my computer. I have downloaded a series of programs to remedy this problem. The problem with my DEP still persists. Following the removal of these spyware programs my AIM chat program will not open it simply "almost opens". It gets to the point where it is about to load my friend lists and the entire thing cuts off. It simply vanishes.

At that point I attempted to go online to download AIM again or retrieve an update. After I download the program onto the desktop I clikc on it to open it but DEP shuts it off.

DEP is doing this for a vvariety of programs and its getting pretty unbearable. I even shut it off using the command prompt and it still is doing its thing.

Please Help.

Here is the link where I worked with the person on my spyware issues. I am very greatful for their help and wanted to supply this link in case you need to backtrack.

THANKS!!! :pullhair:
Looks like you might have caused the settings for Data Execution Prevention DEP to be overly restrictive, during your session in malware removal at SWBW.

From: http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Windows/e…8361611033.mspx

give this a try:

1.

Open System by clicking the Start button Picture of the Start button, clicking Control Panel, clicking System and Maintenance, and then clicking System.
2.

Click Advanced System Settings. Administrator permission required If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
3.

Under Performance, click Settings.
4.

Click the Data Execution Prevention tab, and then click Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those I select.

To turn off DEP for an individual program

•

Select the check box next to the program that you want to turn off DEP for, and then click OK.

If the program is not in the list, click Add. Browse to the Program Files folder, find the executable file for the program (it will have an .exe file extension), and then click Open.

Hello, \ Following my session i was told to use command prompt to turn off DEP. bcdedit.exe /set {current} nx AlwaysOff I used this same method to turn it back on. bcdedit.exe /set {current} nx AlwaysOn The problem is now I cannot check off these options within the performance tab under DEP.
The following command should allow you to use Application Compatibility options as per above which you state are currently greyed out.

Run a command prompt as administrator.
From the start menu, select "All Programs", then "Accessories" and right-click on the "Command Prompt" shortcut and choose "Run As Administrator".
From here you can use the following command:

bcdedit.exe /set {current} nx Optin <– make this change in the command you were previously instructed.
(Changing only the value AlwaysOn to Optin)

Then select:

Start - Control Panel - System and Maintenance - System
Advanced system Setting
Performance - Settings

Data Execution Prevention(Tab)
Click - to Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those I select.
Hi Moose1000,

the instruction should read:

bcdedit.exe /set {current} nx Optout

Sorry, that was my mistake.
My previous "optin" instruction causes DEP to enforce from Hardware as well as software.
The new "optout" should provide the ability to utilize the exemptions listed earlier from Control panel.

If the above doesn't work………..

The remaining option is relates to what "brand" of CPU your machine has installed.
If it is Intel based, instead of AMD, we will have to make one more adjustment in the instruction command.

Therefore, if changing the command to "optout" does not enable your options to make exemptions we need just a little more info.

Your machine may have an "Intell Inside" logo at which point we could properly assume that your CPU is Intel and make the change accordingly. Or it may have an "AMD" which will tell us you have AMD.

If you have no such "logo" informing you of the brand of your CPU (AMD or Intel)
Then please run Belarc Advisor - download Here: http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html

When you run "Advisor.exe" Vista will challenge you permissions to do so.
Please select that you wish to allow Advisor to access the internet and to scan your machine.
you will receive a very comprehensive inventory of your machine and installed software.
We are only interested in the very early part of this inventory to identify the CPU.
Here's an image of what we are looking for:

Please have a look at your Belarc Advisor Report.
in your next reply please tell us what CPU brand-name and model you have.
Hi It still didnt work i have an AMD turion processor 64 X2 What could be keeping from it? Thanks by the way. I appreciate your continuing help :notworthy: :pullhair:
Did you re-boot your machine after performing the command? If not, please reboot. Any change? _____________________ Are you running a 32bit version of Vista …. or 64bit version of Vista?
To see if your computer is running 32-bit or 64-bit Windows, do the following:

1. Open System by clicking the Start button , click Control Panel, click System and Maintenance, and then click System.

2. Under System, you can view the system type.

It works now

Good Work!

Whats next?

That's up to you.
Do you have other questions about your machine?

To accomplish your original intent, you can consult the instructions given above to cause an "exemption" for applications that DEP tries to stop, but which you "trust".

Be careful that you have downloaded a trustworthy application from a trustworthy source.

Best Regards
No. DEP is available to help protect your machine, particularly with regard to situations known as buffer overrun. IE and firefox may encounter that type of situation, therefore protection should remain in place. You should create "an exemption" only in instances where the application you wish to run is blocked. Spend some time running your machine in a similar manner as has been your prior habit. (good habits only please - meaning be careful what you click on in emails and avoid banner and sponsored ad content on website pages.) Please do not install new software at this time, until you get a feel for how the machine is running. That would include: Please do not uninstall and reinstall applications that may have previously caused you difficulty or warnings from DEP. Report back with successes and frustrations. Give us a list of any applications which may continue to cause difficulty.
There is this one issue that gives me headache. Sometimes when I click on something on FF or IE(mainly FF since it is my browser of choice.) it freezes up. It does so for a while with its white screen. So Im relegated to pushing the switch to turn the computer off. This is bad I know. What Can I do to correct this? Also what actually happens when the computer is shut off manually? :pullhair: ( this is hilarious)
