FYI...

May 22, 2009 - "Microsoft is confirming that it is cutting off Windows Live Messenger service for users in five countries that are “subject to United States sanctions.” As reported first by LiveSide.net* earlier this week, “users in Cuba, Syria, Iran, Sudan and North Korea can no longer IM with Windows Live Messenger.” A Microsoft spokesperson confirmed the move on May 21: “I can confirm the report on LiveSide is correct. Microsoft has discontinued providing Instant Messenger services in certain countries subject to United States sanctions. Details of these sanctions are available from the United States Office of Foreign Assets control”..."

Somebody, somewhere, who has the power to make that happen apparently believes the action is worthy and maybe even a good idea. I don't.

I lean towards agreement with you on this, but the "Somebody, somewhere..." is pretty clear:

... certain countries subject to United States sanctions. Details of these sanctions are available from the United States Office of Foreign Assets control”..."

Also, 'might be connected to stuff like this, since they all sit around the same Cabinet table with some regularity:

Political activist use social networking schemes like FaceBook.
Pictures and ideas available via Facebook may not suit the 90% Shi'a Islamic authorities

Heck, Iran even recently confiscated a Nobel Peace Prize awarded to one of its own citizens.
Maybe they don't want competition for the people's loyalty and obedience.

What are your thoughts about the reasons?

Perhaps they're having major problems with hackers or something over there. Although hackers are everywhere so :\
