Hi -
Sorry to trouble you! I hope you can help…
I have XP pro SP2 on a pentium4 Toshiba laptop.
The machine is running very sluggishly and recently the fan has been going mad - the heat blown out is incredible. I also get a message during boot up saying that PadExe.exe (Toshiba program?) has encountered a problem and needs to close.
I followed forum suggestions and ran the latest versions of ATFcleaner and Malwarebytes which found and removed 1 item. Spybot, AVG, Adaware have found nothing….

Any help or advice would be very gratefully received!!!

Many Thanks in advance - Logs below—

Hello.

My name is Extremeboy or EB for short, and I will help you with any malware related problems you may have.

If you do not make a reply in 5 days, we will need to close your topic.

Please take note of some guidelines for this fix:
  • Refrain from making any changes to your computer including installing/uninstall programs, deleting files, modifying the registry, and running scanners or tools.
  • If you do not understand any step(s) provided, please do not hesitate to ask before continuing. I would much rather clarify instructions or explain them differently than have something important broken.
  • Even if things appear to be better, it might not mean we are finished. Please continue to follow my instructions and reply back until I give you the "all clean". We do not want to clean you part-way, only to have the system re-infect itself.
  • Old topics are closed after 3-5 days with no reply, and working topics are closed after 5-7 days. If for any reason you cannot complete instructions within that time, that's fine, just post back here so that we know you're still here.

Download and Run DDS

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explanation about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results, click no to the Optional_Scan
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet. Information on A/V control HERE

– Note: The screen instructions indicate the attach.txt must be zipped before attaching (not posted) to your forum post. Instead, we want you to include attach.txt as an attachment to upload using the "Browse" button in the text editor when making your reply.

Hi There- Thanks for your reply!! I am unable to access my laptop for a short while. I'll follow your instructions and post again a.s.a.p. Many thanks for your help–
Hi EB- I am attaching the two generated reports…. My laptop has taken to shutting down, no warning no blue screen, the fan goes mad and then– off! I'm beginning to feel as if it may be a hardware issue……. Thanks in advance for your help I look forward to your reply
Hi EB I have started to get THOUSANDS of email non delivery notifications - I didn't realize because I have my webmail set to delete anything that is not specifically addressed to me, and I have discovered some weird files in- douments and settings/ temp / temp internet files / that involve long strings of characters and figures that I've not seen anything like before. These include words like 'emailsky' - hmmm!! :pullhair: I can copy some and send for you to look at if it will help. I am no longer going on line with that computer and I am currently using my work Mac that also has a Windows boot camp partition so I can download and transfer any programs or files I may need to the laptop via CDR. I am fairly conversant with computers in general but not a 'wiz' so you may have to bear with me. Looking forward to hearing from you .. Jezza
Hello.

I have discovered some weird files in- douments and settings/ temp / temp internet files / that involve long strings of characters and figures that I've not seen anything like before. These include words like 'emailsky'

Please show me. An screenshot or the actual file name and exact location of it.

The fan thing does indeed sound like a hardware issue to me rather than a malware issue. Just out of curiosity, how long have you been using that computer?

Then please run a rootkit scan for me to confirm if there are any hidden or rootkits involved in this. If you are free from malware then we can move you to another forum for further help.

We need to scan for Rootkits with GMER
  • Please download GMER from one of the following locations, and save it to your desktop:
    • Main Mirror
This version will download a randomly named file (Recommended)
    • Zip Mirror
This version will download a zip file you will need to extract first. If you use this mirror, please extract the zip file to your desktop.
  • Close any and all open programs, as this process may crash your computer.
  • Double click [external image: Posted Image] or [external image: Posted Image] on your desktop.
  • Allow the gmer.sys driver to load if asked.
  • You may see this window. If you do, click No.
    [external image: Posted Image]
  • Click on [external image: Posted Image] and wait for the scan to finish.
  • If you see a rootkit warning window, click OK.
  • Push [external image: Posted Image] and save the logfile to your desktop.
  • Copy and Paste the contents of that file in your next post.

Thanks.

With Regards,
Extremeboy
Hi EB-
Thanks for the reply. I am posting the GMER log below, along with a screenshot of the file names I mentioned.
The files are located at C:\Documents and Settings\My Name\Local Settings\Temp\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\……………
Looking at the log I think that some of my problems are caused by a nasty Logitech dll, but that's another story.

Thanks for the help as always!!

Hello.

We will update Java, run ATFCleaner and get an online scan.

Update Java to Version 6 Update 14

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to exploit and infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) Version 6 and save it to your desktop.
  • Look for "Java Runtime Environment (JRE)" JRE 6 Update 14.
  • Click the Download button to the right.
  • Select your Platform: "Windows".
  • Select your Language: "Multi-language".
  • Read the License Agreement, and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".

Hello EB- Thanks for your reply. I followed your instructions to the letter, and no malware was found. I am pasting the report below. The oddly named files are still present even after running the ATF Cleaner. I wonder if they are anything to do with the original Trojan removed by the first Malwarebytes scan. Should I try to delete them? Hello. Take a new DDS log for me. Yes, you can delete them if it works. They aren't really a harm but see if you can delete them if you can't let me know if you want help on deleting those. I will need to know the folder and location that they are in. With Regards, Extremeboy
Hi EB- Sorry for the slight delay. I am attaching the DDS logs as requested. You were right about the files they seem to delete (with Toni Arts Easy Cleaner) but instantly return. If you feel that it's OK to leave them then I will, but if you think that they should go- the files are located at C:\Documents and Settings\My Name\Local Settings\Temp\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\(random folder name here)\…………… (the files) Thanks very much for your continued help!
I think they should be fine. If you want, we can try to remove those if you want afterwards. how is your computer running at the moment? Any symptoms of anything so far? The DDS logs looks fine. With Regards, Extremeboy
Hi EB- I have just changed a few laptop power settings and it is running much cooler now, but even before that the machine seemed much better and not running away as it was before. I think that the first Malwarebytes scan may have snagged the actual problem- but I needed to ask you guys to be sure!! Thanks for the suggestion to update Java…….The massive amount of returned mails seems to have almost stopped now, so I am assuming that the spam sending has finished ( if it was from my computer- I don't really know) I have Spybot + Teatimer, Adaware, AVG with Firewall, but if there is any tools that you think worth using in the future please let me know. Thanks a million for the effort that you and your comrades put in…………………………. Best Wishes and keep up the great work
Hello.

I'm really sorry for the delay. I have been overloaded with work. :(

Glad everything is better now. Below are the instructions to remove the tools we used and also some prevention tips.

Please follow/read the steps below to remove the tools we used, purge a system restore and for some more information. :)

Download and Run OTC

We will now remove the tools we used during this fix using OTC.

Create a New System Restore Point<- Very Important

Now you should Create a New Restore Point to prevent possible reinfection from an old one. Some of the malware you picked up could have been saved in System Restore. Since this is a protected directory your tools cannot access to delete these files, they sometimes can reinfect your system if you accidentally use an old restore point. Setting a new restore point AFTER cleaning your system will help prevent this and enable your computer to "roll-back" to a clean working state.

The easiest and safest way to do this is:
  • Go to Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools and click "System Restore".
  • Choose the radio button marked "Create a Restore Point" on the first screen then click "Next". Give the R.P. a name, then click "Create". The new point will be stamped with the current date and time. Keep a log of this so you can find it easily should you need to use System Restore.
  • Then use Disk Cleanup to remove all but the most recently created Restore Point.
  • Go to Start > Run and type: Cleanmgr
  • Click "Ok"
  • Disk Cleanup will scan your files for several minutes, then open.
  • Click the "More Options" Tab.
  • Click the "Clean up" button under System Restore.
  • Click Ok. You will be prompted with "Are you sure you want to delete all but the most recent restore point?"
  • Click Yes, then click Ok.
  • Click Yes again when prompted with "Are you sure you want to perform these actions?"
  • Disk Cleanup will remove the files and close automatically.
Vista Users can refer to these links: Create a New Restore Point and Disk Cleanup.

System A bit Slow? Try StartupLight

You may wish to try StartupLite. Simply download this tool to your desktop and run it. It will explain any optional auto-start programs on your system, and offer the option to stop these programs from starting at startup. This will result in fewer programs running when you boot your system, and should improve preformance.

If that does not work, you can try the steps mentioned in Slow Computer/browser? Check Here First; It May Not Be Malware.

Congratulations! You now appear clean! ;)

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

Preventing Infections in the Future

Please also have a look at the following links, giving some advice and Tips to protect yourself against malware and reduce the potential for re-infection:

  • Avoid gaming sites, underground web pages, pirated software sites, and peer-to-peer (P2P) file sharing programs. They are a security risk which can make your computer susceptible to a smörgåsbord of malware infections, remote attacks, exposure of personal information, and identity theft. Many malicious worms and Trojans spread across P2P file sharing networks, gaming and underground sites. Users visiting such pages may see innocuous-looking banner ads containing code which can trigger pop-up ads and Flash ads that install viruses, Trojans and spyware. Ads are a target for hackers because they offer a stealthy way to distribute malware to a wide range of Internet users.

Disable Autorun on Flash-Drive/Removable Drives

When is AUTORUN.INF really an AUTORUN.INF?

USB worms work by creating a file called AUTORUN.INF on the root of USB drives. These INF files then use Autorun or Autoplay (not the same thing!) to execute themselves either when the stick is inserted, or more commonly, when the user double-clicks on the USB drive icon from My Computer (Windows Explorer)…

Keeping Autorun enabled on USB and other removable drives has become a significant security risk due to the increasing number of malware variants that can infect them and transfer the infection to your computer. Read USB-Based Malware Attacks and Please disable Autorun asap!.

If using Windows Vista, please refer to:
"Disable AutoPlay in Windows Vista"
"Preventing AutoPlay with Local Group Policy Editor or AutoPlay options panel"

Note: When Autorun is disabled, double-clicking a drive which has autorun.inf in its root directory may still activate Autorun so be careful.

Vist the WindowsUpdate Site Regularly

I recommend you regularly visit the Windows Update Site!
  • Lots of Hacking/Trojans use the methods found (plugged by the updates) that have not been stopped by people not updating.
  • Update ALL Critical updates and any other Windows updates for services/programs that you use.
  • If you wish to turn on automatic updates then you will find here is a nice little article about turning on automatic updates.
  • Note that it will download them for you, but you still have to actually click install.

Update Non-Microsoft Programs

It is also a good idea to check for the latest versions of commonly installed applications that are regularly patched to fix vulnerabilities. You can check these by visiting Secunia Software Inspector and Calendar of Updates.

Update all programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs you have installed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.
Finally, and definitely the MOST IMPORTANT step, click on the following tutorial and follow each step listed there:
