Last week, my son was searching for a site he could watch a boot-leg copy of the new Star Trek movie. When he though he found one he clicked the "Click Here to Watch" button. According to him, hundreds of pop-ups started opening. So he turned off the computer.
When I got home, I turned it on and ran AVG anti-virus. It reported several infections, and cleaned them automatically. I then ran Super Anti-spyware. It reported over 200 infections. However about 150 were cookies. I told it to remove all infections then rebooted. I had trouble gettin back on the computer after that. It would show "Loading personal settings" then immediately go to "Saving your personal settings" and log out.
I managed to find the solution for the login problem. But now the computer can not get on the internet. I can ping by IP address and by domain name. I can access the other computers on my network, and each of them can access the PC with the problem.
Please help.

Hi Tymont

My name is Bjorn, known as Bv202 on this forum and I'll be happy to assist you with all your malware problems you have on your computer.

Before we start fixing your computer, there are a few points you need to know:
  • Please don't start a new topic, but reply on this one.
  • If you don't understand something, please ask!
  • If you find any new problems and/or details, please post them!
  • Please always try to reply within 5 days. If you know you won't be able to reply for any reason, please tell me so we don't close your thread.
  • As I'm still in training at the Malware Removal University, all my posts needs to be checked by an expert first.

Remember: absence of symptoms does not mean your computer is clean!!
Please reply to this topic until I say your computer is clean.

I'm now researching your log. Once it's done, I'll be back to you.

In the meantime, please do this:
  • Open HijackThis.
  • Look under System tools.
  • Click on the Open Uninstall Manager… button.
  • Click on the Save list… button.
  • It will prompt you to save. Save this log in a convenient location. By default it's named uninstall_list.txt.
  • Notepad will open. Please copy and paste the contents of this log in your next reply.
Hi Tymont

You will need something to transfer the LSPFix tool to this computer. This shouldn't be a problem as you've managed to post a HijackThis log and as you seem to have multiple computers :)

Download LSPfix.
  • Transfer the downloaded .zip to your computer.
  • Extract LSPFix.zip (unzip) it to its own folder.
  • Disconnect from the internet, and close all browser windows.
  • Open the LSPFix folder.
  • Double click LSPFix.exe
  • Click the "I know what I'm doing" button.
  • In the left hand pane, hilight all instances of ntdll64.dll (and nothing else).
  • Move them to the "Remove" pane by clicking the >> button.
  • Click Finish.
  • Reboot your computer to complete the process.

Now, you should be able to connect to the internet again. If not, please tell me. You'll need to transfer the next files you'll download to your computer in that case.

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Check (tick) all items except items in the C:\System Volume Information folder, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location.
  • The log can also be found here:
    C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt
  • Post that log back here.

FIX HIJACKTHIS ENTRIES
Open up Hijackthis.
Click on do a system scan only.
Place a checkmark next to these lines(if still present).

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {c2a00c1c-dbd8-48ae-bc76-84e1290bcf1c} - (no file)

Then close all windows except Hijackthis and click Fix Checked
Close HijackThis.

RSIT
  • Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (<< will be maximized) and info.txt (<< will be minimized)

I managed to find the solution for the login problem.

How exactly did you fix this?

In your next reply, please post:
1) The Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware log
2) The RSIT logs
3) Please tell me if you're able to connect to the internet again

You asked exactly how I managed to fix the login problem… I found a site called thinkinginpixles.com. They had a step by step how to that worked great. My problem was that I could not login to the PC. Even in safe mode. When I tried to use my windows XP disk I could get to the recovery console, but I could not access any drive. Even the c: drive returned an error of "No disk or CD in drive. So, I downloaded an iso image of the Vista Recovery Disk. Also another ISO image of something called SaveMe v1.55.0. I booted to the recovery disk and used it to access a command prompt. Then I switched to my CD drive and ran the SaveMe disk. I followed the instructions it showed. I wish I could tell you exactly what it did, but I really have no clue.
Hi Tymont

Nice to hear you can use the internet again :)

Mcafee
I can see some signs of Mcafee in your log, but it seems you uninstalled it. Am I correct? If so, there are some leftovers which can be deleted with a Removal Tool:
http://service.mcafee.com/FAQDocument.aspx?id=TS100507
Scroll a bit and start with "Step 2 - Download and run MCPR.exe"
Ofcourse you don't need to do step 3 :)

Host file
From your logs it seems you're using a custom hostfile:

Some online game-websites seems to be blocked. Did you set this yourself (for your children for example)?

In your next reply, please post:
1) The OTM-results
2) The Kaspersky Report
3) A new HijackThis log
4) Please answer my question about the host file (see above)

Regarding the Hosts file… I do use a custom Hosts file to block some games from my children. The know how to get around everything but that method of site blocking. Of course, I'm glad you pointed out to me. I had forgotten I added WoW to the list. I was wondering why I couldn't get there the other day. hahaha I really appreciate all the help you've been giving me. My computer is running much better. However, it seems every time you have me scan with a new program, I find more infections. Current;y, I have removed over 200 infections since this whole ordeal began.
Hi Tymont

Nice to hear everything runs better now and thank you for the information about the host file :)

However, it seems every time you have me scan with a new program, I find more infections. Current;y, I have removed over 200 infections since this whole ordeal began.

You managed to remove the most before asking for help here. Some things we deleted or modified here were just leftovers. Your logs are looking very good now, just a few more files from the kaspersky report to remove :)

We need to run OTM again. You should still have this tool. If not, please download it again (you'll find the link in one of my previous posts).
Run OTM.exe
  • Double-click OTM.exe. (Vista users, please right click on OTM.exe and select "Run as an Administrator")
  • Copy the lines in the codebox below.
C:\Documents and Settings\Jill Hadley\Shared\jimmy c newman - greatest hits.mp3
C:\Documents and Settings\Jill Hadley\Shared\jimmy c newman.snd
C:\Documents and Settings\Jill Hadley\Shared\matrix revolutions soundtrack (256k 44800).mp3

Yes, this key, R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Window Title = Stephen Loves Jill I modified myself. Just a little note to my wife. You said that it looked as though some messages in Outlook Express might be infected. However, I do not use OE. My wife uses Outlook, so I assume that is what you mean. Her inbox is so full it will take some time to go through it all.
Hey Tymont

We're almost there :)

As you likely noticed, I have made a small mistake with the OTM script
Let's do it again :)

Run OTM.exe
  • Double-click OTM.exe. (Vista users, please right click on OTM.exe and select "Run as an Administrator")
  • Copy the lines in the codebox below.
:Files
C:\Documents and Settings\Jill Hadley\Shared\jimmy c newman - greatest hits.mp3
C:\Documents and Settings\Jill Hadley\Shared\jimmy c newman.snd
C:\Documents and Settings\Jill Hadley\Shared\matrix revolutions soundtrack (256k 44800).mp3
C:\WINDOWS\CouponPrinter.ocx
  • Return to OTM.exe, right click in the Paste Instructions for Items to be Moved window (under the yellow bar) and choose Paste.
  • Click the red Moveit! button.
  • Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar), and paste it in your next reply.
  • Close OTM.exe

Update Java Runtime
You are using an old version of Java. Sun's Java is sometimes updated in order to eliminate the exploitation of vulnerabilities in an existing version. For this reason, it's extremely important that you keep the program up to date, and also remove the older more vulnerable versions from your system. The most current version of Sun Java is: Java Runtime Environment Version 6 Update 13.
  • Go to Java Site
  • Click to Download Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 13
  • In Platform box choose Windows.
  • Check the box to Accept License Agreement and click Continue.
  • Click on Windows Offline Installation, click on the link under it which says "jre-6u13-windows-i586-p.exe" and save the downloaded file to your desktop.
  • Go to Start => Control Panel => Add or Remove Programs
  • Uninstall all old versions of Java (Java 3 Runtime Environment, JRE or JSE)
  • Install the new version by running the newly-downloaded file with the java icon which will be at your desktop, and follow the on-screen instructions.
  • Reboot your computer

In your next reply, please post:
1) The OTM results
2) A new HijackThis log
3) Let me know if there are more issues now :)
Here is the OTM log…

I removed all previous versions of Java and installed the newest release as you instructed.
I must say, this computer hasn't run this fast in a very long time. I wish I knew how to interpret the HJT information. I would like to be able to do this procedure on my other computer without having to bother you. Is there somewhere I can find the information?
Hi Tymont

I must say, this computer hasn't run this fast in a very long time.
I wish I knew how to interpret the HJT information. I would like to be able to do this procedure on my other computer without having to bother you.
Is there somewhere I can find the information?

Nice to hear your computer is running fine :)
Removing malware from infecting systems is not something you can learn by just reading some information. You can apply for free training here at WTT, but it will take months before you're allowed to post to real persons under supervision of experienced helpers.

You won't be able to do this procedure on your other system by yourself. If you need help, please create a new thread in this forum for your other computer.

If you're interested in learning this, please click here for more information.

CLEAN UP
Let's clear out the programs we've been using to clean up your computer, they are not suitable for general malware removal and could cause damage if used inappropriately.

  • Double-click OTM.exe. (Vista users, please right click on OTM.exe and select "Run as an Administrator")
  • Click the CleanUp! button.
  • Select Yes when the "Begin cleanup Process?" prompt appears.
  • If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
  • The tool will delete itself once it finishes, if not delete it by yourself.

FIREWALL
I can't see any firewall in your HijackThis log, so i assume you use windows firewall.
Without a firewall your computer is susceptible to being hacked and taken over. If you use the Windows Firewall you might think that's sufficient but it only controls one way of the traffic (inbound). Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.
It's preferable to install one of the suggested firewalls.

FREE FIREWALLS
  • Comodo
When installing, it will ask you to install Anti-Virus functionality. Please uncheck "install comodo antivirus (recommended)" unless you've uninstalled your AV. NEVER have 2 or more Anti-Virus programs on your computer; it will cause performance loss and/or other problems.
  • Online Armor
  • Sunbelt Kerio

Tutorial about Firewalls can be found here

Congratulations, your machine appears to be clean! :)
Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

Update your Antivirus programs and other security products regularly to avoid new threats that could infect your system.
You can use one of these sites to check if any updates are needed for your pc.
Secunia Software Inspector
F-secure Health Check

Make sure you enable Automatic Updates for your computer. You can set this in the control panel -> windows update.
An alternative way is to visit Microsoft often to get the latest updates for your computer:
http://www.update.microsoft.com

P2P Software
Peer to Peer (or P2P) software are the #1 source of malware infections. Even if the program itself is safe, the downloads you get with them can (and will) be infected. If you've used such software in the past and you're going to use it again, please be very careful with what you download from it.

Here are some free programs I recommend that could help you improve your computer's security.

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
Download it from here. Click "Download" and you'll get redirected to download.com, where you can download the product. You can also buy this program, which gives you real-time protection against common malware. However, you can use the free program to scan and remove any infections found.

Install WinPatrol
Download it from here
Here you can find information about how WinPatrol works here

Install FireTrust SiteHound
You can find information and download it from here

Install MVPS Hosts File from here
The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer.
Find Tutorial here : http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm

Stand Up and Be Counted —> Malware Complaints <— where you can make difference!
The site offers people who have been (or are) victims of malware the opportunity to document their story and, in that way, launch a complaint against the malware and the makers of the malware. We would very appreciate it if you register on that forum and make your complaint.

Happy safe surfing!
