Hello Experts, I can't even get my browser to find a connenction to the internet. An Old, outdated version of Windows defender is telling me there is a Vundo trojan horse, and that I should run a spyware removal tool I have a older version of Ad-aware, and a current version of AVG-Free running, but I cant get online to download hijack this - ot update anything. Can you help get to the internet - and them help me clean up the machine. I had to creat this from antoerh machine. Thanks so much ! DK
Hello DK

Welcome to the Whatthetech Malware Removal Forum,

All advice given by anyone volunteering here, is taken at your own risk.
While best efforts are made to assist in removing infections safely, unexpected stuff can happen.

Go to a known clean computer and download this program, burn it to a CD, not a flash or thumb drive , transfer it to the infected computer and run it.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here or Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.<– Don't forget this
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and Paste the entire report in your next reply.

Good Morning,

If you have Internet Explorer 7 or 8, open it and to to Tools> Internet Options> Advanced Tab> Reset Internet Explorer Settings> Reset, let it do its thing for a few seconds, then ok your way out, Close IE , then reopen it and see if it helped.

If still a no go then run this tool. I am assuming that this is a XP machine with service pack 3
Winsockxpfix

If this won't work for you either than what I would do is to contact your ISP and tell them you lost your internet connection and let them run you through getting back online. Your infected with Vundo, malwarebytes got most of it but most likely not all of it so we need to get you back online so we can continue the cleaning.

Ken
Ken, Well I am back on line - with the following issues: 1. IE is working very slow - and some times crashes- I never used it before this - I used Firefox, and until I did the reset in the IE advanced settings - neither browser would load a web site - now they both work - but Firefox is working much "smoother" 2. I keep getting the following pop up dialog box: Windows - No Disk Exception Processing Message C0000013 Parameters 75b6bf7c 4 75b6bf7c 75b6bf7c Cancel Retry Continue I hit the cancel button - and the message comes back about 8 times - each time I cancel or try to close it with the X 3. My AVG update manager will not download the updates. So, I seem to be on line - and am ready for the next set of cleaning instructions Thanks, dk
Lets do this.

Download Trendmicros Hijackthis to your desktop.
  • Double click it to install
  • Follow the prompts and by default it will install in C:\Program Files\Trendmicro\Hijackthis\Highjackthis.exe
  • Open HJT Scan and Save a Log File, it will open in Notepad
  • Go to Format and make sure Wordwrap is Unchecked
  • Go to Edit> Select All…..Edit > Copy and Paste the new log into this thread by using the Submit Reply and not start a New Thread.
DO NOT have HijackThis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.
Ok Ken… :wavey:

Here you go:

Good Morning,

You have some nasty things going on on this system.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune to your desktop.
  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Under Main choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
Your system may start up slower after running ATF Cleaner, this is expected but will be back to normal after the first or second boot up
Please note: If you use online banking or are registered online with any other organizations, ensure you have memorized password and other personal information as removing cookies will temporarily disable the auto-login facility.

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
  • See this Link for programs that need to be disabled and instruction on how to disable them.
  • Remember to re-enable them when we're done.

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[external image: Posted Image]

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply along with a New Hijackthis log.

*If there is no internet connection when Combofix has completely finished then restart your computer to restore back the connections.

Hi,

Combofix removed quite a bit. Besides Vundo, you had a Rootkit infection

Go to your Add Remove Programs in the Control Panel and uninstall these

C\Program Files\\LimeWire
C:\Program Files\Viewpoint
C:\Program Files\AskBarDis <– Your call
C:\Program Files\AOL<–Your call

You need to enable windows to show all files and folders, instructions Here

Go to VirusTotal and submit these files for analysis, just use the BROWSE feature and then Send File , you will get a report back, post the report into this thread for me to see.

c:\windows\system32\service-466.exe
c:\windows\system32\drivers\piymqdik.sys
c:\windows\system32\drivers\gxdwjvme.sys

Download GMER's application from here:
http://www.gmer.net/gmer.zip

Unzip it and start the GMER.exe
Click the Rootkit tab and click the Scan button.

Once done, click the Copy button.
This will copy the results to your clipboard.
Paste the results in your next reply.

Post the results from VirusTotal, the GMER log and a new HJT log please
OK Ken

Nice job , thank you.

c:\windows\system32\service-466.exe <–Right click on this file and delete it, leave it in the Recycle Bin for a day or so just in case we need it.

GMER <–Shows no Rootkit so thats gone.

After you delete that file, reboot, run HJT and post a new log. Let me know how your system is running now?
Hi Ken

System seems to be running fine - thanks.

A few questions - then the HJT log as requested

1. I have an external USB connected hard drive back - did the scans check it, and remove any malware on it? (drive K: on this computer)

2. I was planning on running the following security programs to prevent further problems:
winpatrol
AVG Free
Spywareblaster 4.2

I also keep Malwarebytes and Ad-Aware updated - and occasionally run scans
Do you have any other recommendations to minimize further infection?

3. If there are any other useless start up programs running or programs that will slow me down - - please indicate how to delete them

Thanks
Awaiting next instruction
