I have been having trouble with my Dell Laptop with Windows Vista for a few weeks and cant afford to pay them the outrageous price to fix it. The last few weeks Ive had problems with programs/ broswers freezing up and "not responding", and lately I have been unable to open my internet browsers from the main screen, only being able to access the internet in AOL. Now the latest is that I havent been able to boot up my computer and it goes to a black screen and does nothing. When I turn it on in safe mode, it will boot up but the programs I have tried to run to test for spyware freeze up. When I was turning the computer on in the regular screen it was a black screen for about 2 minutes and then it would turn blue and show those shaky blue lines and restart to do the same.

Any help is appreciated as I really dont want to have to quick restore.

THANKS in advance

I downloaded Combatfix and it kept telling me I had 2 different Norton products on my computer. I made sure I did not have any Norton or Semantac products on my computer and temporarily uninstalled McAfee and restarted it but I still got the message that I have Norton on my computer when I tried to run Combat.
Hi,

If you had Norton on your system at one time, there may be some left over files. You can use the Norton Removal tool to delete everything:

Download the Norton Removal Tool from HERE and save it to your desktop.
Next  Double click on Norton_Removal_Tool.exe  to run the tool.
Follow the on-screen instructions.
Your computer may be restarted more than once, and you may be asked to repeat some steps after the computer restarts.

As long as there are no symantec processes running - go ahead and run ComboFix, it could be just the malware interfering.

Hi,

Please do the following:

Please download GooredFix from one of the locations below and save it to your Desktop
Download Mirror #1
Download Mirror #2
  • Double-click GooredFix.exe to run it.

Hi,

That's good, everything found by Kaspersky is already in quarantine.

Please do the following:

Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 and save it to your desktop.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 13. The Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications."
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Select the Windows platform from the dropdown menu.
  • Read the License Agreement and then check the box that says: " I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6 with JavaFX License Agreement". Click on Continue. The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Now go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE or Java™ 6) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java version.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u13-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.
  • After the install is complete, go into the Control Panel (using Classic View) and double-click the Java Icon. (looks like a coffee cup)
    • On the General tab, under Temporary Internet Files, click the Settings button.
    • Next, click on the Delete Files button
    • There are two options in the window to clear the cache - Leave BOTH CheckedApplications and AppletsTrace and Log Files
  • Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window

Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE.
  • Click OK to leave the Temporary Files Window
  • Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.

Click Start >> Run and then copy/paste the following into the box and hit Enter:
"%userprofile%\Desktop\GooredFix.exe" /uninstall
If any of your security programs query a new Registry/AutoStart value being added please allow the changes.

Please post a fresh HJT log and advise how your computer is running and is there are any outstanding issues, before we get to the final tool cleanup
My computer is running much better than it was before. It still occasionally has been freezing for a shorter time and "not responding" but has been much better. My browser has been opening and staying open now though which is good. Thanks

Hi,

Your log is clean

The 'freezing' issue, does not appear to be malware related, you might want to try a defrag:

Download and run Auslogics Disc Defragmenter

If that doesn't help, post a new topic in our HARDWARE forum and see if out Tech Experts can assist with that issue, link back to this topic so they can see you are clean of malware.

Now we just have some clean up to do:

Please do the following:

Follow these steps to uninstall Combofix

  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the ..X and the /U, it needs to be there.

Below I have included a number of recommendations for how to protect your computer against malware infections.
  • Keep Windows updated by regularly checking their website at :
    http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/
This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer.

  • SpywareBlaster protects against bad ActiveX, it immunizes your PC against them.

  • SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts. Make sure you are only running one real-time anti-spyware protection program ( eg : TeaTimer, Windows Defender ) or there will be a conflict.

  • Make Internet Explorer more secure
    • Click Start > Run
    • Type Inetcpl.cpl & click OK
    • Click on the Security tab
    • Click Reset all zones to default level
    • Make sure the Internet Zone is selected & Click Custom level
    • In the ActiveX section, set the first two options ("Download signed and unsigned ActiveX controls) to "Prompt", and ("Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe") to "Disable".
    • Next Click OK, then Apply button and then OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • ATF Cleaner - Cleans temporary files from IE and Windows, empties the recycle bin and more. Great tool to help speed up your computer and knock out those nasties that like to reside in the temp folders.

  • MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well known ad sites and other bad sites. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer, meaning it will be difficult to infect yourself in the future.

  • For Firefox, I highly recommend these add-ons to keep your PC even more secure.
    • NoScript - for blocking ads and other potential website attacks
    • McAfee SiteAdvisor - this tells you whether the sites you are about to visit are safe or not. A must if you do a lot of Googling

  • Keep a backup of your important files - Now, more than ever, it's especially important to protect your digital files and memories. This article is full of good information on alternatives for home backup solutions.

  • ERUNT (Emergency Recovery Utility NT) allows you to keep a complete backup of your registry and restore it when needed. The standard registry backup options that come with Windows back up most of the registry but not all of it. ERUNT however creates a complete backup set, including the Security hive and user related sections. ERUNT is easy to use and since it creates a full backup, there are no options or choices other than to select the location of the backup files. The backup set includes a small executable that will launch the registry restore if needed.

  • Recovery Console - Recent trends appear to indicate that future infections will include attacks to the boot sector of the computer. The installation of the Recovery Console in the computer will be our only defense against this threat. For more information and steps to install the Recovery Console see This Article. Should you need assistance in installing the Recovery Console, please do not hesitate to ask.

  • Please read the guide by Rorschach112 on how to prevent malware and about safe computing here
Thank you for your patience, and performing all of the procedures requested.

Please respond one last time so we can consider the thread resolved and close it, thank-you.
