Hi, I've somehow gotten infected with trojan.vundo. I've used different anti-virus programs, but none can get rid of it. Most say access denied and can't remove it. One (if not the main culprit) of the infected files seems to be C:/Windows/System32/qqpilgmy. Norton catches it and says it's blocked, sometimes it says it's removed, but it doesn't take any action and catches it every time I boot up and when often while I'm using the computer. Then it says reboot. Then same thing happens, etc….

Thanks for any help. (Forgot to mention whenever I open Outlook, I get multiple bad image file errors - about 6 or 7 in a row before Outlook starts) Thanks guys

Due, in part, to the large numbers of HJT logs being posted, there are four things that you need to be aware of.

1) If you have already posted this log at another forum, you need to post here that you have done so and this topic will be closed.
Multiple posting not only ties up valuable resources, but could also result is some unpleasant side-effects for your system if you follow two sets of instructions at the same time.
If, during research, an identical log is identified at another forum, this thread will be closed.

2) If you don't post a meaningful reply to any of my posts within five days, this thread will be closed. Due to limited free time, I can only have so many open threads at any one time and if yours isn't active, somebody else's will be.
If, by omission, the thread hasn't be closed after five days and you post, it will just serve as a reminder to me to close it.
Please note that "I just dropped in to say Hi!" isn't a meaningful reply!

3) Malware removal is a tricky business, and malware writers don't tend to worry about the damage their creations do, so it is advisable to back-up all important files BEFORE we start. Although most cases have a successful conclusion, on occasion things don't go according to plan and it is better to be prepared for the worst.

4) Back-ups can get lost or damaged, so make two if the files are that important to you!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Open Notepad: Start > All Programs > Accessories > Notepad.
Click on Format and ensure that Wordwrap is unchecked. If it isn't, uncheck it.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Take a trip to this webpage for download links and instructions for running Combofix by sUBs: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix *
  • Please be aware that this tool may require the PC to be rebooted so close any programs you have open before you start.
  • When CF has finished, it will produce a log - C:\ComboFix.txt - copy and paste it into your next reply.
  • Post a fresh HJT log as well.
  • Let me know how the PC is behaving.
* There are two points to note from the instructions page:

1) The Recovery Console.

It is recommended that you install this as, in certain circumstances, it may be the difference between a successful repair and a reformat. If you are uncertain as to whether or not you already have the Recovery Console installed, simply run CF and it will prompt you if it does not detect it.
CF will complete it's removal tasks without the installation of the Console, so you are free to choose whether you want to complete this step, but it is in your interests to do so.

2) Disabling your Anti-Virus.

CF has been the victim of false-positive detections on occasion and a resident AV may incorrectly identify and delete part of the tool which won't do it much good. If you don't disable your AV, you may not get the results you hoped for!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Finally, run HJT and click on Open the Misc Tools section.
  • Click Open Uninstall Manager…
  • Click Save list… and save it to your Desktop.
  • Copy and paste the file uninstall_list.txt into your next reply.
Thanks for your response. I've not posted anywhere else. This is the first virus I've encountered that I needed to seek help with resolving.
Thanks for your help Noviciate.
ETA: Performance - very slow start up and reboots (sometimes 10-20 minutes). Computer reboots occasionally out of the blue, or after alerting me it will reboot due so some arcane error message. Bad image file errors when opening Outlook and at other inadvertent times. Sluggish browsing, etc.
Thanks again.
ETA: Seems my NortonIS2009 Intrusion Prevention won't stay enabled after I started Norton back up after following your instructions. I can turn it on and it takes, but it doesn't stay on for long….
Thanks
Noviciate, after a couple reboots, the virus seems to be gone. I no longer find it by scanning, and the bad image file errors when using Outlook have disappeared. Intrusion protection is once again enabled and stays enabled. I've rebooted numerous times, and no problems with the virus. Your fix seems to have done the trick. Browsing is much faster, no computer reboots out of the blue, etc. The only thing I can think of that might be a legacy of the vundo virus is the sound is a bit messed up. It's blurry and jittery at times when listening to music or when it boots up and windows makes its startup sound. But that might be something non-vundo related. Thanks for your help friend, I appreciate it much. Saved my butt after 3 days of trying everything. Should have come here first. -Bob
I think we'll have one last peek at the hard drive, just to make sure, and then we'll tidy a few odd and ends and that will be that.
Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from here and save it to your Desktop - unless you already have it, in which case skip to the "updating" bit below.
  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • Ensure a checkmark is placed next to both Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version - you'll need to clear it with your firewall.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan and then Scan.
  • When the scan has finished, click OK and then Show Results to view the results - no surprise there!
  • If MBAM finds anything, check the box(es) and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
Let me have the MBAM log, a fresh HJT log (run in Normal Mode) AND a description of how your PC is behaving.
I notice the two registry keys and the infected file still exist after rebooting three times. There is a backup (.bak) of the infected file. I don't know if that was newly created or not, it's dated to 2004 as is the original.
Rebooting takes a very long time compared to before the virus. After I'm up and running though, everything seems to work well, except for the jittery, blurry and static sound.
Thanks much Noviciate. Should I try to manually delete the infected registry keys after making a registry backup, and also try to delete the infected driver file? (c:\WINDOWS\system32\aqwswns.dll)
thanks
The entries in your logs can/should be dealt with by doing the following:
Delete your copy of ComboFix and download a fresh one from the address in my earlier post - it gets updated quite often and you may as well use the latest version.
Copy and paste the following into Notepad (Start > All Programs > Accessories > Notepad):
KillAll::
Driver::
c:\windows\system32\drivers\flpkvsoa.sys
File::
c:\windows\system32\drivers\flpkvsoa.sys
c:\windows\system32\aqwswns.dll
c:\windows\system32\xpnqgmn.dll
Registry::
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\~\Browser Helper Objects\{5E3E57C4-FB3E-4CA9-B3C9-88C66E43D7C8}]
Save it to your Desktop with the following filename: CFScript
Drag and drop CFScript.txt onto your copy of Combofix and let it do it's thing.
Let me have the log produced, as before, as well as a fresh HJT log and a description of how the PC is behaving.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I think that the Norton issue will require a re-installation. There is an entry in your first HJT log that looks like it has been borked by something, either a nasty or something you ran to deal with the same:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ccApp] -

This is an entry to autostart Norton's Auto-Protect module and it isn't complete. Whatever did for this may have done other things to your Internet Security package and it's better to be safe than sorry.

It seems the registry key values MalAware found are still in the registry, but it deleted the infected files. The aqwswns.dll.bak still exists, but I imagine that's not a problem. After running Combo I unistalled, rebooted and reinstalled Norton. There was a problem with (a check mark on the system tray icon that's been there for awhile) before the reinstall. It wouldn't email scan, but after the reinstall that problem is gone. Now it's got the good green check mark on the icon. (although the "O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ccApp] -" line is still in the Hijack log after the reinstall.

The computer runs well, except for the sound problems and the bootup, which still takes a long time. The black startup page with the words 'Microsoft Windows XP' and the Logo and the blue running progress bar is where it seems to stick for about 10 minutes. I wonder if this is because I changed using msconfig from Normal startup to prevent some programs from loading at bootup. Would changing from normal to selective startup cause the long bootup problem? I don't know how to get rid of the infected registry key values.

Thanks again Noviciate for your help, I appreciate it.

Hi Noviciate. I updated Malaware and ran it last night. It found nothing. The registry key "HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{5e3e57c4-fb3e-4ca9-b3c9-88c66e43d7c8}" still exists, but Malaware didn't seem bothered by it. The machine is rebooting a little quicker, and all else works fine except for the jittery, jaggedy sound (at times).
Thanks - do you think all is well?

It's not in the HJT log that you posted - unless my eye are painted on, which is always possible. Where are you seeing it? I'd assume the registry, but I like to ask.
Yes, I searched the registry for it after running Malware, and that's where it is. It's only in one location in the registry now, though. It was in two before; it was also under Browser Helper Objects under Hkey Local Machine - but that key is now deleted. Bootup time is halved, everything is running smooth except the sound issue - sometimes stuttery, sometimes blurry. It seems to have occurred when I got the virus, so I think it's related. But maybe not. thanks - should I post elsewhere about the sound problem? And do you think I'm good to go on the virus? I think maybe Malware uninfected the relevant registry key and not it's not a problem, but that's just a guess. thanks -bob
It's just a leftover and if you are confident to do so, just right click it and delete it. It won't do any harm if left as the file itself has gone, so if you don't want to play in the registry let it be.

Your copy of Adobe Reader needs updating. You can get the latest, free, version here.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Your version of Sun Java needs updating:
1) Go here and click on the Windows XP/Vista/2000/2003 Offline link in the Windows section near the top and save it to your Desktop.
2) Download JavaRa from here and save it to your Desktop.
You will need to extract the file(s):
Right click on the zipped folder and from the menu that appears, click on Extract All…
In the 'Extraction Wizard' window that opens, click on Next> and in the next window that appears, click on Next> again.
In the final window, click on Finish
***Please close any instances of Internet Explorer before continuing!***
  • Double-click JavaRa.exe to begin.
  • Pick your prefered language from the drop-down menu and click Select.
  • Click on Remove Older Versions to remove older version of Java - obvious really, isn't it!
  • Click Yes when prompted. When JavaRa is done, a notice will appear that a logfile has been produced. Click OK.
  • A logfile will pop up. Please save it to a convenient location, just in case you have any problems with Java afterwards.
3) Run the installer that you downloaded earlier.
The difficulty with speed issues is that it is hard to nail down the exact cause. The following steps will serve as a spring clean for your PC. Not all of them will be of benefit to your PC as this is a general post, but the overall effect should be positive.
1) Go to Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove any programs that you no longer use and then reboot your PC.
2) Download ATF Cleaner by Atribune from here and save it to your Desktop.
Double click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Check the boxes to the left of:
Windows Temp
Current User Temp
All Users Temp
Temporary Internet Files
Java Cache
The rest are optional - if you want to remove the lot, check "Select All".
Finally click Empty Selected. When you get the "Done Cleaning" message, click OK.
If you use the Firefox or Opera browsers, you can use this program as a quick way to tidy those up as well.
When you have finished, click on the Exit button in the Main menu.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.
Please Note: This program is for Windows XP and Windows 2000 only.
3) Double click My Computer.
Right click the disc drive you wish to check.
Click Properties.
In the Properties dialog box, click the Tools Tab.
Under Error-checking, click the Check Now button.
In the "Check Disc Local Disk (C:)" dialog box, check both Automatically fix file system errors and Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors, and then click Start.
This will look for and attempt to repair any errors that your hard drive has.
4) Defragment your hard drive. A tutorial for disc defragmentation is available here.
5) Download and run StartUp Inspector.
This program will help you to decide exactly what programs you disable from running at startup.
The Readme.txt file included has instructions on how to use it.
Let me know how you get on.
Well, I just searched the registry once more, and the key is gone now anyway. No finds of the value in the whole registry, so the legacy remnant must have been deleted when I rebooted some time or other since I ran MalwareB. Thanks for all of your help Noviciate. I'll follow your advice on speeding up the system, and let you know how it works. You saved my butt, I appreciate it. Take care friend -bob
Noviciate, I went through each of enumerated steps you posted above. Some helped, some didn't. But the result is really impressive. Bootup takes 2 minutes now, 1/5 the time it was taking before. Thanks for your advice and tips.
I also found a VBA script that solved my stuttering sound problem. You guys might check it out, and check out the website to see if it's kosher or not.
Found the link here
Here's the page with the vba script
I was playing around with the PIO and DMA settings, but I couldn't get them to stay DMA. They kept reverting back to PIO. I don' t know if this is a legacy of the virus I was infected with, or not. So I googled and found the sites above.
I ran virus scan on the script after dl and scanned after running the vba script. There seems to be no new problems from running it, except my sound is fixed.
Thanks again, take care
I love a happy ending! Just a couple of last minute things for you to deal with:
Your copy of Adobe Reader is out of date. You can get the latest, free, version here.
ComboFix showed your Norton Firewall to be disabled. If it still is, you need to enable it. If you are having problems with it, you need to replace it with a third-party alternative. The Windows firewall that comes with SP2 doesn't monitor outbound connections, so it's pants!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I want you to run your PC as normal for a few days and when you are happy that everything is fine, do the following:

Go to Start > Run, enter the following into the textbox and click OK: combofix /u
This will uninstall Combofix and do a little housework besides.

Create a new Restore Point - this will give a clean one should you need it in the future.
A tutorial for System Restore is available here.

The reason for waiting is that if removing the malware has caused a problem, which it occasionally does, you can put your PC back to how it was before the fix. This will re-install the malware, but an infected PC is better than an expensive paperweight!

Some bedtime reading: This is a very good tutorial about keeping your computer safe and secure on the internet.

As long as you manage not to have issues with the above, you're finally done. :woot:
