When malwarebytes and adaware attempt to clean on restart it just reinfects. I ran spybot too. Downloaded COMODO antivirus and firewall and had that run.

ran malwarebytes again.

Tried my best, but it was nice to know you guys are pros at handling this stuff. I liked to think I was pretty well protected. Hope you can help
Thanks,
David

Hi

You seem to have P2P file sharing software installed there. Since nowadays major part of infections are received from P2P networks it's recommended to uninstall such software. If you don't want to uninstall keep the software disabled during whole cleaning process anyway.

Download DDS and save it to your desktop from here or here or here.
Disable any script blocker, and then double click dds.scr to run the tool.
  • When done, DDS will open two (2) logs:
    • DDS.txt
    • Attach.txt
  • Save both reports to your desktop. Post them back to your topic.
Thanks. Did as you said, I believe. attached text files. I did a keystone cops attempt at cleaning by looking around the forums. Ran combofix(didn't turn off Comodo antivirus though and messed up the routine), almost had to reinstall windows. But the incessant popups and attempts to further infest seems to have stopped. Thanks for helping me.
Combofix did not run properly. I had left antivirus on, and it failed to get through routine, so no report. Would you like me to run it again(properly)? Excuse the delay, I was gone all day today.
Ok. Let's make sure ComboFix gets run properly this time.

Before it I want to make sure you either disable DNA Bittorrent from running at startup or uninstall it now. I will only assist you if you keep it away from running during the process (it's not finished until system is clean).

Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running ComboFix tool:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:

The Recovery Console was successfully installed.

Please continue as follows:

  • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix, link
    Remember to re-enable them afterwards.

  • Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.

When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Please include the following reports for further review, and so we may continue cleansing the system:

C:\ComboFix.txt
New dds.txt log.

A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.
Thankyou. bittorrent program itself is not running. bittorrentdna is some nonsense, I will remove as immediately as possible. My add/ remove programs is currently taking an hour to populate itself, and today it froze the computer. I followed your other instructions and I am again waiting for add/remove. A lot of other problems have ceased, thankfully and for the moment I don't feel like smashing computer or Bill Gates to bits. erased bittorrentdna. attached new dds.txt
Hi

Upload following files to http://www.virustotal.com and post back the results:
c:\windows\system32\drivers\18188346.sys
c:\windows\system32\drivers\TCPIP.SYS

Are you familiar with C:\setup_7.0.0.290_10.05.2009_04-53.exe file?

Uninstall old Adobe Reader versions and get the latest one here or get Foxit Reader here. Make sure you don't install toolbar if choose Foxit Reader! You may also check free readers introduced here.

Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

Driver::
talovpt

NetSvc::
htepxwlv

File::
c:\windows\system32\drivers\ihgfn.sys

FireFox::
FF - HiddenExtension: XUL Cache: {9BCD8558-E4EF-4E68-A476-921CDC52CB4B} - c:\documents and settings\compaq_administrator\local settings\application data\{9bcd8558-e4ef-4e68-a476-921cdc52cb4b}\

Save this as
CFScript

A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.

[external image: Posted Image]

Close all browser windows and refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe
Then post the resultant log.

Combofix should never take more that 20 minutes including the reboot if malware is detected.
If it does, open Task Manager then Processes tab (press ctrl, alt and del at the same time) and end any processes of findstr, find, sed or swreg, then combofix should continue.
If that happened we want to know, and also what process you had to end.

NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.

If you use Opera:
Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.

Please run an online scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner as instructed in the screenshot here.

Post back its report, a fresh dds.txt log and above mentioned ComboFix resultant log :)
Ok, wanted to get this done before I leave for the day. Thanks so much. jh is Kapersky report which looked to come up empty. That file you asked if I was familiar is kapersky virus removal. Did you want me to run it? I think I followed everything. You are awesome for doing this.

That file you asked if I was familiar is kapersky virus removal. Did you want me to run it?

No, just wanted to make sure it was legit file :)

Anyway, did you do this:

Upload following files to http://www.virustotal.com and post back the results:
c:\windows\system32\drivers\18188346.sys
c:\windows\system32\drivers\TCPIP.SYS

Please provide results for those too.
File 18188346.sys received on 05.16.2009 14:18:26 (CET) Current status: finished Result: 0/40 (0.00%) File TCPIP.SYS received on 05.16.2009 19:24:09 (CET) Result: 0/40 (0%) looks good
Well congrats, it appears your system is all clean Are you still noticing any problems? If not, it's time to secure your system to prevent against further intrusions.

THESE STEPS ARE VERY IMPORTANT

Let's reset system restore
Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove infected files that have been backed up by Windows. The files in System Restore are protected to prevent any programs changing those files. This is the only way to clean these files: You will lose all previous restore points which are likely to be infected. Please note you need Administrator Access to do clean the restore points.

1. Turn off System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

2. Reboot.

3. Turn ON System Restore.
On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
UN-Check *Turn off System Restore*.
Click Apply, and then click OK.
NOTE: only do this ONCE,NOT on a regular basis

Now lets uninstall ComboFix:
  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type "c:\documents and settings\Compaq_Administrator\Desktop\ComboFix.exe" /u in the runbox and click OK

You may also delete dds.scr file and related logs.

The following are recommended third party programs that are designed to keep your computer clean. A link as well as a brief description is included with each item.

  • hosts file:
  • Every version of windows has a hosts file as part of them.
  • In a very basic sense, they are used to locate webpages.
  • We can customize a hosts file so that it blocks certain webpages.
  • However, it can slow down certain computers.
  • This is why using a hosts file is optional!!
Download it here. Make sure you read the instructions on how to install the hosts file. There is a good tutorial here
If you decide to download the hosts file, the slowdown problems can usually be avoided by following these steps:
  • Click the start button (at the lower left hand corner of your screen)
  • Click run
  • In the dialog box, type services.msc
  • hit enter, then locate dns client
  • Highlight it, then double-click it.
  • On the dropdown box, change the setting from automatic to manual.
  • Click ok

Just a final reminder for you. I am trying to stress these two points.
UPDATE UPDATE UPDATE!!! Make sure you do this about every 1-2 weeks.
Make sure all of your security programs are up to date.
Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

Once again, please post and tell me how things are going with your system… problems etc.

Have a great day,
Blade B)
Thanks again blade. searches through google in upper right corner of firefox are getting hijacked. I'll try the hostsfile thing, but my computer is 5 years old and firefox has become a hog. Everything else is good and I'll try to do something nice for a stranger next opportunity. thank you, david
Hi David

Have you tested how searching works thru "normal" google page? Does search hijacking occur there too or just when used from Firefox?

Please download GooredFix and save it to your Desktop. Double-click Goored.exe to run it. Select 1. Find Goored (no fix) by typing 1 and pressing Enter. A log will open, please post the contents of that log in your next reply (it can also be found on your desktop, called GooredLog.txt). Note: Do not run Option #2 yet.
