My computer is running on Windows Vista. This program surfaced after I installed a security update. I used system restore to revert to before the update, and the problem went away for 1 or 2 days before returning. I have used Avast! antivirus and Ad-Aware and CCleaner's registry scanner to scan my computer and they did not find any suspicious files.
The problem usually begins with the window i am currently viewing becoming "window not responding". then it might resolve itself or usually, the desktop and toolbar hangs also and the mouse cursor becomes the busy hourglass. after that, nothing works, or takes extremely long to work, not even alt-ctrl-delete. when i managed once to get to task manager when the problem started, i did not notice anything out of the ordinary running.
My computer runs both Ubuntu and Vista. Since my ubuntu works fine, i am inclined to believe that it is a software error in Vista that is causing these problems.

Thanks for any help rendered :)
a fellow human
Hi a fellow human,

:welcome:

My name is Tomk. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can take a while to research, so please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:

  • I will be working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for the issues on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

Open Notepad: Start > All Programs > Accessories > Notepad.
Click on Format and ensure that Wordwrap is unchecked. If it isn't, uncheck it.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two.

Then

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.
  • Note: If you receive a notice that some of the items couldn't be removed, that they have been added to the delete on reboot list, please reboot (shut down your computer then restart it).
Also "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Hi Tomk,

Thanks for your help.
Ok i will first describe how my computer is behaving now. unfortunately i am now using ubuntu most of the time to avoid the crashes, so its not too detailed.
During bootup with vista os, while still on the booting up part where the screen is black with white fonts, a scan of some sorts was initiated and the scan removed numerous corrupt somethings and recovered numerous orphaned somethings. i didnt manage to see exactly what it removed or recovered, but it scanned for quite some time. i have never seen this happen before.
i noticed that Firefox, windows calendar, MS word are all running slower than normal. windows calendar was "not responding" at startup. these are the programmes which i use frequently.
so far the computer hasnt crashed so far, but as i said, i havent been using it much.

ok moving on to the various steps you instructed me to carry out…….
ATF cleaner.
carried out all your steps. however you specified that "If you use FireFox or the Opera browser To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt." I use both Opera and Firefox, but i did not see this prompt. is that normal or insignificant?

My computer is no longer crashing (so far) thanks a lot dude :D:D:D
however, my firefox homepage is not loading properly, its loading halfway and stopping there. my homepage is http://www.google.com/ig
my computer is still not normal yet i think (its slower than normal but that might be due to clearing of prefetch) but at least the crashing and hanging is gone. for now at least.

  • After a few moments, attach.txt will open in a second window.
  • Save both reports to your desktop.
—————————————————
  • Post the contents of the DDS.txt report in your next reply
  • Attach the Attach.txt report to your post by scroling down to the Attachments area and then clicking Browse. Browse to where you saved the file, and click Open and the click UPLOAD.

a fellow human,

I'm not convinced that we've done anything to solve your situation. However, I can't find any malware either. I suggest that if you continue to have problems, that you post in the windows forums and see if the Tech Team can help. If you do that, please provide a link there back to this topic so they will have access to your logs.

Log looks good :D

Cleanup

  • Double click on OTListIt to run it.
  • Click on CleanUp!
  • When done, you will be prompted to restart your computer. Please restart your computer.

You need to create a new Clean restore point:

  • Download SysRestorePoint to your desktop and unzip it to it's own folder.
  • Double click SysRestorePoint.exe so that we can make a new system restore point.
  • A box will pop up after it has made a new point, usually after a few seconds. Close that window and exit the program.
Remove all previous Restore Points
Click Start Menu > Run > copy and paste

cleanmgr

You may be asked to choose drive. Choose C: At top, click on More Options tab. Click Clean up… button in the System Restore box. Click on Yes button. When finished, click on Cancel button to exit.

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Check "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, Uncheck "Show hidden files and folders."
Check "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

The following is my standard advice for the future. Use what you can and pat yourself on the back for what you're already doing.

Please take time to read Preventing Malware - Tools and Practices for Safe Computing. Very important information for your consideration is contained therein.

I would also suggest you read this:
So how did I get infected in the first place?
by Tony Klein

Also: "How to prevent malware"
by miekiemoes

Please respond back that you understand the above and let me know if you have any questions. Otherwise, this thread will be closed Resolved.
Hi Tomk, Thanks for all your help. if i have any more problems i will definitely post to the windows forums you mentioned. However i have a problem with your instructions hahaha what's OTListIt? i googled the term, and i cannot find much about it other than its a malware remover which can post logs too…… links on some sites to the download location are broken too. can you please tell me where i can download this OTListIt? many thanks :) a fellow human
a fellow human,

Apparently I had a brain cramp. Ignore what I said before and try this please.

  • Make sure you have an Internet Connection.
  • Download OTCleanIt to your desktop and run it
  • A list of tool components used in the Cleanup of malware will be downloaded.
  • If your Firewall or Real Time protection attempts to block OTCleanUp to reach the Internet, please allow the application to do so.
  • Click Yes to begin the Cleanup process and remove these components, including this application.
  • You will be asked to reboot the machine to finish the Cleanup process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.
Hi Tomk, haha brain cramp i must remember that its quite funny :) i understand your instructions now and have done as instructed. thanks for all your help dude! a fellow human
