copied the following from a post I have in hardware-notebooks.

Hi, I have been having problems with my screen being covered in these blue/white stripes that step across it —___—-___— I have tried my laptop through my TV but the same thing happens which I assume means the problem isn't monitor related. I first noticed the problem when I ran certain games but it has become more frequent and is now intermittent when just looking at my desktop. The mouse also colours in blue on some parts of the screen as if I were using the wide brush in "paint".

Prior to this I have been having problems when running applications like google earth and a radio controlled flight sim realflight G4. The graphics have large triangular blocks which dance around the screen and ultimately crash the computer resulting in an error message that there was a problem with my ATI graphics card.
I have tried updating my driver but these applications still don't work.

I know my RAM needs upgrading as I have cacheman running and as I type this there is only 64 MB of free RAM available!

My laptop is a Elonex soliton prowire with 512 MB RAM
Graphics are ATI mobility Radeon X600 with 128MB dedicated RAM
Windows XP home

I am not very clued up on computers or using forums but am eager to learn!

I hope I have given enough information to enable you to help, please ask if you require anything further

thanks
Wayne

Hi The big ugly one,

:welcome:

My name is Tomk. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can take a while to research, so please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:

  • I will be working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for the issues on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

Nothing obvious showing.

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.

  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Archives
      Mail databases
  • Click on My Computer under Scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As….
  • Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  • Please post this log in your next reply.
Hi Tomk, Thanks for looking at my file I tried running Kasperspy but I had explorer problems after 2hour 10 mins of scan! I am attaching copy of error for you to look at and if there is anything you could recommend I do to stop this happening again before I try again tomorrow it would be appreciated. Thanks Wayne 📎script_error.txt
The big ugly one,

I'm not sure what caused that but lets bring in the big gun in case it was malware related.

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link –> http://forums.whatthetech.com/How_Disable_…ams_t96260.html

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[external image: Posted Image]

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Notes:

1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.
3. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
4. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you – please tell your helper.
5. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.
Hi Tomk, I followed the instructions as given and have attached the log as requested. One problem I did get is after combofix had performed it's scan and showed me the results, I closed the text window and my desktop screen had nothing on it except for my background picture- no icons, tray or start menu button. After 30 minutes like this, I turned the computer off with the power button then rebooted. All seems as it was before. Thanks Wayne 📎ComboFix.txt
The big ugly one,

Please download the OTMoveIt3 by OldTimer.
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Please double-click OTMoveIt3.exe to run it. (Note: If you are running on Vista, right-click on the file and choose Run As Administrator).
  • Copy the lines in the codebox below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):

    :Processes
    explorer.exe

    :Services

    :Reg

    :Files
    c:\windows\TEMP\TFR1AD.tmp
    c:\windows\TEMP\TFR402.tmp
    c:\windows\TEMP\TFR497.tmp
    c:\windows\TEMP\TFRCA.tmp

    :Commands
    [purity]
    [emptytemp]
    [start explorer]
    [Reboot]
  • Return to OTMoveIt3, right click in the "Paste Instructions for Items to be Moved" window (under the yellow bar) and choose Paste.
  • Click the red Moveit! button.
  • Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar) to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy), and paste it in your next reply.
  • Close OTMoveIt3
Note: If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes. In this case, after the reboot, open Notepad (Start->All Programs->Accessories->Notepad), click File->Open, in the File Name box enter *.log and press the Enter key, navigate to the C:\_OTMoveIt\MovedFiles folder, and open the newest .log file present, and copy/paste the contents of that document back here in your next post.

Also, please post a new HijackThis log.
Hi Tomk

Here are the OT and HJT logs as requested

OT did reboot and displayed the log automatically on the restart.

Thanks

Wayne

Now would you please try to run Kaspersy online again?
Tomk Yes, I will try Kasperspy again. I will do the HJT then start the scan and will probably leave my computer to get on with it overnight. I shall hopefully post the results for you tomorrow. Thanks Wayne
Hi Tomk, Kaspersky ran perfectly this time, Here is the log. I downloaded astlog to identify my password on my e-mail account, is this a baddie? The big ugly one, It's only a baddie if someone else put it on your system. It's a password stealer. It is hard to "steal" your own password. Pesonally, I'd get rid of it. Please post a new HijackThis log and let me know how the computer is running.
Hi Tomk

Here's the latest HJT log for you.

My computer is running fine except for the graphics issue I still have, although the mouse cursor doesn't seem to be drawing lines anymore.

I don't have much free RAM either but I read somewhere that security suites use a lot of that anyway so I am not really concerned about that. Time to upgrade.

I will delete astlog as I haven't had need to use it for ages, it helps when you use passwords that you can remember!

Thanks

Wayne

The big ugly one,

I suggest you return to your thread in the Tech forums and let the Tech Team try to help you solve that. I suggest that you post a link back to this thread there so that they can see what we've done here.

Log looks good :D

Cleanup

  • Double click on OTMoveIt3.exe to run it.
  • Click on CleanUp!
  • When done, you will be prompted to restart your computer. Please restart your computer.

You need to create a new Clean restore point:

Click Start Menu > Run > copy and paste

%SystemRoot%\System32\restore\rstrui.exe

Press OK. Choose Create a Restore Point then click Next. Name it (something you'll remember) and click Create, when the confirmation screen shows the restore point has been created click Close.

Remove all previous Restore Points
Click Start Menu > Run > copy and paste

cleanmgr

You may be asked to choose drive. Choose C: At top, click on More Options tab. Click Clean up… button in the System Restore box. Click on Yes button. When finished, click on Cancel button to exit.

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Check "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, Uncheck "Show hidden files and folders."
Check "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

The following is my standard advice for the future. Use what you can and pat yourself on the back for what you're already doing.

Please take time to read Preventing Malware - Tools and Practices for Safe Computing. Very important information for your consideration is contained therein.

I would also suggest you read this:
So how did I get infected in the first place?
by Tony Klein

Also: "How to prevent malware"
by miekiemoes

Please respond back that you understand the above and let me know if you have any questions. Otherwise, this thread will be closed Resolved.
HI Tomk, Thanks for the "all-clean" and thanks for taking the time to go over my computer, It is appreciated. I have read and will re-read the posts you listed and get myself kitted out with the best of security and try to keep clean in the future! Now I shall get the tech team scratching their heads for me!! Thanks again Wayne
