Hello,
I cant seem to get rid of trojan horse. I have run ATF, and downloaded Malwarebytes - and have run that. But every time I reboot, I get a program named pwkxdts trying to load, and it keeps taking on different names (mostly as a US Robotics systme file) - Win Patrol keeps bringing it up and I keep blocking it

Here are my malwarebytes log, and my HijackThis logs:

Hello and Welcome to the forums!

My name is Gringo and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems. HijackThis logs can take some time to research, so please be patient with me. I know that you need your computer working as quickly as possible, and I will work hard to help see that it happens.

Before we start: Please be aware that removing Malware is a potentially hazardous undertaking. I will take care not to knowingly suggest courses of action that might damage your computer. However it is impossible for me to foresee all interactions that may happen between the software on your computer and those we'll use to clear you of infection, and I cannot guarantee the safety of your system. It is possible that we might encounter situations where the only recourse is to re-format and re-install your operating system, or to necessitate you taking your computer to a repair shop.

Because of this, I advise you to backup any personal files and folders before you start.

Somethings to remember while we are working together.

1.Please do not run any other tool untill instructed to do so!
2.Please reply to this thread, do not start another!
3.Please tell me about any problems that have occurred during the fix.
4.Please tell me of any other symptoms you may be having as these can help also.
5.Please try as much as possible not to run anything while executing a fix.

If you follow these instructions, everything should go smoothly.

: Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware :

  • I would like you to rerun MBAM
  • Double-click mbam icon
  • go to the update tab at the top
  • click on check for updates
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform full scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is Checked (ticked) except items in the C:\System Volume Information folder and click on Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. please copy and paste the log into your next reply
  • If you accidently close it, the log file is saved here and will be named like this:
  • C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt

:run combofix:

Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode.
This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:

The Recovery Console was successfully installed.
Please continue as follows:

  • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
  • Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.

When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.

Please include the report in your next post:

C:\ComboFix.txt

uninstall list

Make an uninstall list using HijackThis
To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:

1. Start HijackThis
2. Click on the Config button
3. Click on the Misc Tools button
4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
5. Click on the Save list… button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad here on your next reply.

:information and logs:

In your next post I need the following

1.log from MBAM
2.log from combofix
3.uninstall list from hijackthis
4.new hijackthis log

Save it to your desktop as CFScript.txt

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe
[external image: Posted Image]
This will let ComboFix run again.
Restart if you have to.
Save the produced logfile to your desktop.

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

:information and logs:

In your next post I need the following

1.log from combofix
2.new log from Hijackthis
3.How is the computer doing now?

Gringo
good morning Gringo :notworthy:

3.How is the computer doing now?

I am still getting WinPatrol messages :
first : Scotty has detected a change in the following monitored file.
Filename: HOSTS
Location: c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts
If this change is expected then choose "Accept Change"
If you did not expect or understand this change then "reject change"

…I KEEP REJECTING THIS
Then, i get another immediate dialog box that says
2 The system cannot find the file specified

also, I assume that after combofix runs, that I should turn my AVG virus protect on

And - When I run combo fix, the program shuts down 2 times - and i have to re-log in - but then it keeps running.. is this correct?
these pop up mesages above occur while combo fix is running - and i answer them - should i just be ignoring them?
thanks much!

mk
hello

:Run CFScript:

Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the box into the window:

File::
c:\windows\system32\drivers\skqfxwom.sys

Registry::
[HKLM\~\services\sharedaccess\parameters\firewallpolicy\standardprofile\AuthorizedApplications\List]
"c:\\Program Files\\LimeWire\\LimeWire.exe"=

Save it to your desktop as CFScript.txt

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe
[external image: Posted Image]
This will let ComboFix run again.
Restart if you have to.
Save the produced logfile to your desktop.

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Hello mkinaz

Glad to hear you are feeling better,

we have just a little left to do

:Run CFScript:

Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the box into the window:

Folder::
C:\Documents and Settings\NIkki\My Documents\LimeWire
J:\Documents and Settings\NIkki\My Documents\LimeWire
C:\Documents and Settings\NIkki\Shared
J:\Documents and Settings\NIkki\Shared

Save it to your desktop as CFScript.txt

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe
[external image: Posted Image]
This will let ComboFix run again.
Restart if you have to.
Save the produced logfile to your desktop.

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

:information and logs:

In your next post I need the following

1.log from combofix
2.new hijackthis log
3.how is the computer now?

Gringo
Hi Gringo

Wow, seems like I just deleted a lot of my daughter's downloaded music..
Did she lose all of these files - or are they still on the computer - in a different format - in her itunes library?

Did all of these Limewire downloads have malware embedded?
Should I STOP her from using Limewire? (your opinion)
If I have a virus scanner like AVG and Ad-aware running - are Limewirer downloads safe?

Here are your requested logs:

1.log from combofix

this file is huge - and i cant post it here - it makes my post to long - can i attach the txt file instead?

2.new hijackthis log

Hello

Sorry about your daughter's downloaded music. It is not the safest way to download music.
It is how you got infected to begin with.

from techsupportforum

Until recently, p2p file sharing was fairly safe. That's no longer true. Malware writers are increasingly and agressively exploiting them to spread their wares. There's a significant increase in the number of people infected via the use of P2P programs. Running any type of p2p application will make one far more prone to infection by malware. The nature of P2P filesharing is so that even if one is using a "clean" program, many of the files downloaded from non-documented sources have the potential of being infected. More than half of all files available for download from peer-to-peer networks have been deliberately infected with some form of malware. Most P2P file sharing programs are configured to automatically launch at startup and are also configured to allow other p2p users on the same network open access to a shared directory on the computer. File sharing is based on this unfettered acces to all computers across the p2p network. It's this practice that can make systems vulnerable not only to data and identity theft but also to becoming instrumental in the spread of malware.

from securitycadets

P2P programs form a direct conduit on to your computer, their security measures are easily circumvented and malware writers are increasingly exploiting them to spread their wares on to your computer. Further to that, if your P2P program is not configured correctly, your computer may be sharing more files than you realise. There have been cases where people's passwords, address books and other personal, private, and financial details have been exposed to a file sharing network by a badly configured program.

Did all of these Limewire downloads have malware embedded?
do you want to take the chance?

Should I STOP her from using Limewire? (your opinion)

YES, P2P is the number one preventable way of infecting yourself
Is this your computer. all those infected files were downloaders, sometimes they can download some nasty things.

If I have a virus scanner like AVG and Ad-aware running - are Limewirer downloads safe?

NO. You volintarily download them to your computer, then you volintarily run them

Here is part of log from Kaspersky 85% of what it shows is in these to folders limewire and shared

J:\Documents and Settings\NIkki\My Documents\LimeWire\Incomplete\T-3877627-NeverShoutNever - Big City Dreams .mp3 Infected: Trojan-Downloader.WMA.GetCodec.n 1
J:\Documents and Settings\NIkki\My Documents\LimeWire\Incomplete\T-4061074-hot revolver (rare track).snd Infected: Trojan-Downloader.WMA.GetCodec.s 1

I will post back more instuctions soon

gringo
Hi Gringo  Thanks for the advice… I agree that P2P can be a sure way to get infected As for the deleted music… Actually, it was NOT deleted - the original downloaded files were deleted by combofix - but the itunes converted files are still in her library - so that looks to be OK !! If a person uses Limewire, converts the downloaded files to Itunes, and then deletes the original download - does that make it any safer? Do you have suggestions for safer music downloads - other than the itunes store? Thanks - I still have that super-big combofix log that I need to send you - please send instructions when ready. Thanks much mk
Hello mkinaz

If a person uses Limewire, converts the downloaded files to Itunes, and then deletes the original download - does that make it any safer?

there is no time that if you use limewire that it can be good,

Do you have suggestions for safer music downloads - other than the itunes store?

sorry I don't

I still have that super-big combofix log that I need to send you - please send instructions when ready.

please go to RapidShare upload the file and post the link to me here

gringo
Hello mkinaz

This is my general post for when your logs show no more signs of malware ;)- Please let me know if you still are having problems with your computer and what these problems are

:Time for some housekeeping:
  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK
  • [external image: Posted Image]

:remove tools:
  • Let's clear out the programmes we've been using to clean up your computer, they are not suitable for general malware removal and could cause damage if used inappropriately.

Please download OTCleanIt and save it to desktop. This tool will remove all the tools we used to clean your pc.
  • Double-click OTCleanIt.exe.
  • Click the CleanUp! button.
  • Select Yes when the "Begin cleanup Process?" prompt appears.
  • If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
  • The tool will delete itself once it finishes, if not delete it by yourself.
Note: If you receive a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding OTCleanIt attempting to contact the internet, please allow it to do so.

:Make your Internet Explorer more secure:

please visit this page that gives instructions to do this
http://surfthenetsafely.com/ieseczone8.htm

:Turn On Automatic Updates:

Turn On Automatic Updates
1. Click Start, click Run, type sysdm.cpl, and then press ENTER.
2. Click the Automatic Updates tab, and then click to select one of the following options. We recommend that you select the Automatic (recommended) Automatically download recommended updates for my computer and install them

If you click this setting, click to select the day and time for scheduled updates to occur. You can schedule Automatic Updates for any time of day. Remember, your computer must be on at the scheduled time for updates to be installed. After you set this option, Windows recognizes when you are online and uses your Internet connection to find updates on the Windows Update Web site or on the Microsoft Update Web site that apply to your computer. Updates are downloaded automatically in the background, and you are not notified or interrupted during this process. An icon appears in the notification area of your taskbar when the updates are being downloaded. You can point to the icon to view the download status. To pause or to resume the download, right-click the icon, and then click Pause or Resume. When the download is completed, another message appears in the notification area so that you can review the updates that are scheduled for installation. If you choose not to install at that time, Windows starts the installation on your set schedule.

or visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.

:antispyware programs:
  • you have a couple of good antispyware programs on this computer but you still can try some of these others to see if you like them also

I would reccomend the download and installation of some or all of the following programs (all free), and the updating of them regularly:
  • WinPatrol As a robust security monitor, WinPatrol will alert you to hijackings, malware attacks and critical changes made to your computer without your permission. WinPatrol takes snapshot of your critical system resources and alerts you to any changes that may occur without your knowledge.
  • Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware - Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware is a new and powerful anti-malware tool. It is
totally free but for real-time protection you will have to pay a small one-time fee.
  • Spyware Blaster - By altering your registry, this program stops harmful sites from installing things like ActiveX Controls on your machines.

please read this great article by miekiemoes How to prevent Malware:
and
this great article by Tony Klein So How Did I Get Infected In First Place

Now you have followed my advice - it's time to lodge a complaint against what you have suffered………

Malware Complaints
If you were infected …. Stand Up and be Counted.

I'd be grateful if you could reply to this post so that I know you have read it and, if you've no other questions, the thread can then be closed.

Gringo
Gringo, We are Done ! :yeah: THANK YOU ! for all of your help. I have followed you last instructions - and you can close this topic as resolved. Unfortunately, I have another computer on my home network that is also infected, and I am not going to tackle that one next. I THINK I need to start another topic - and I hope my next helper is just as good as you. …or can you help with that one also? On this other machine, I cant even GET to the internet to download some of the tools - so, i don't know how I will get the removal programs on that machine, Thanks again ! mk
