My machine is very slow, always seems to be busy, just not doing what I want. I attempted to post a hijack this logfile a few minutes ago and was redirected to a page that said I was using an outdated version, which was probably true as I haven't had to ask for your help on a machine for a year or two. I downloaded the updated version, ran and saved a logfile and, guess what, same thing, redirected. :pullhair: I must have a serious problem. Any help would be appreciated and as always, thanks in advance…
Hello coastalbuck

Welcome to the Whatthetech Malware Removal Forum,

All advice given by anyone volunteering here, is taken at your own risk.
While best efforts are made to assist in removing infections safely, unexpected stuff can happen.

Go to a known clean computer and download Malwarebytes, transfer it by CD ( not a thumb drive ) as of this point I do not know what your infected with , to the infected computer, install it, check for updates if you can and run the scan.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here or Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.<– Don't forget this
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and Paste the entire report in your next reply along with a New Hijackthis log.

After running Malwarebytes, see if you can download and install the latest version of HJT

Download Trendmicros Hijackthis to your desktop.
  • Double click it to install
  • Follow the prompts and by default it will install in C:\Program Files\Trendmicro\Hijackthis\Highjackthis.exe
  • Open HJT Scan and Save a Log File, it will open in Notepad
  • Go to Format and make sure Wordwrap is Unchecked
  • Go to Edit> Select All…..Edit > Copy and Paste the new log into this thread by using the Submit Reply and not start a New Thread.
DO NOT have HijackThis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.
Sorry it's taken so long to reply. I really appreciate the help. Let's see if I can post it now. I ran the Malware bytes program, fixed the 25 things it found. Then redownloaded Hijack this and ran it. Results follow.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune to your desktop.
  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Under Main choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
Your system may start up slower after running ATF Cleaner, this is expected but will be back to normal after the first or second boot up
Please note: If you use online banking or are registered online with any other organizations, ensure you have memorized password and other personal information as removing cookies will temporarily disable the auto-login facility.

Post a new Hijackthis log please
Did the Hijack removal, I already had ATF cleaner so I ran it for both Internet Explorer and Firefox. Ran new scan and here are the results.

Hi,

You have a strange file running out of a temporary directory and thats not good, lets see if it bad or not. You ran ATF Cleaner and it should have removed this file but it did not or else something put it back.

You need to enable windows to Show all Files and Folders
Instructions for your Operating System HERE

Go to VirusTotal and submit this file for analysis, just use the browse feature and then Send File, you will get a report back, post the report into this thread for me to see.

C;\Documents and setting\owner\local settings\temp\bwgo0008147b.exe <– This file
I scanned it as you asked. I don't know how to post it though, I can't copy and paste. It doesn't come out right, some lines are skipped. Computer idiot here I guess. I'm trying anyway.
Just highlight the complete report with your mouse and select copy, and paste it in this thread, I can sort it out on this end. Ken

Keep in mind if you install some of these programs. Only ONE Anti Virus and only ONE Firewall is recommended, more is overkill and can cause you problems. You can install all the Spyware programs I have listed without any problems. If you install Spyware Blaster and Spyware Guard, they will conflict with the TeaTimer in Spybot , you can still install Spybot Search and Destroy but do not enable the TeaTimer .

Here are some free programs to install, all free and highly regarded by the fine people in the Malware Removal Community
  • Spybot Search and Destroy 1.6
Check for Updates/ Immunize and run a Full System Scan on a regular basis. If you install Spyware Blaster ( Recommended ) then do not enable the TeaTimer in Spybot Search and Destroy.
  • Spyware Blaster It will prevent most spyware from ever being installed. No scan to run, just update about once a week and enable all protection.
  • Spyware Guard It offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts, again, no scan to run, just install it and let it do its thing.
  • IE-Spyad
IE-Spyad places over 6000 web sites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • Firefox 3 It has more features and is a lot more secure than IE. It is a very easy and painless download and install, it will no way interfere with IE, you can use them both.
