Hi vlb,

:welcome:

My name is Tomk. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can take a while to research, so please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:

  • I will be working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for the issues on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

Let's get you clean first. Don't let me forget to help you get AOL off before we're done.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two.

Then

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.
  • Note: If you receive a notice that some of the items couldn't be removed, that they have been added to the delete on reboot list, please reboot (shut down your computer then restart it).
Also "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.

Very sorry about that Tomk,

Thank you , vlb
vlb,

Your Java is out of date and you have other old versions still on your computer, those old versions are now a security vulnerability:

Please download JavaRa to your desktop and unzip it to its own folder
  • Run JavaRa.exe, pick the language of your choice and click Select. Then click Remove Older Versions.
  • Accept any prompts.
  • Open JavaRa.exe again and select Search For Updates.
  • Select Update Using Sun Java's Website then click Search and click on the Open Webpage button. Download and install the latest Java Runtime Environment (JRE) version for your computer - Version 6 update 13

Go into the Control Panel and double-click the Java Icon. [external image: Posted Image]
  • Under Temporary Internet Files, click the Settings… button
  • click the Delete Files button.
  • There are two options in the window to clear the cache - Leave both Checked
    • Applications and Applets
      Trace and Log Files
  • Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window
Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE.
  • Click OK to leave the Temporary Files Settings
  • Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.

  • Please open HijackThis and run Do a system scan only
  • Check the boxes next to ONLY the entries listed below(if present):
    • R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant =
      O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {BA52B914-B692-46c4-B683-905236F6F655} - (no file)

      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [IPHSend] C:\Program Files\Common Files\AOL\IPHSend\IPHSend.exe
  • Close all programs except for HijackThis.
  • Click on Fix checked
  • A box will pop up asking you if you wish to fix the selected items. Please choose YES.
  • Once it has fixed them, please exit/close HijackThis.

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.

  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Archives
      Mail databases
  • Click on My Computer under Scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As….
  • Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  • Please post this log in your next reply.

Hi Tomk, Seems to be running fine. Should I do anything with the kaspersky scan result threats? Or do you think we are finished? Thank you, vlb
vlb,

One item is an a quarantine and therefore neutralized. The other two are not really an infection but rather a potential source of infection. Therefore, let's get rid of them.

Please download the OTMoveIt3 by OldTimer.

The reason I am asking is that Trend has 10 quarentined objects it has apparently been collecting from performing security scans and I am curious. Also another question can I remove things that were put on my laptop (when I got it from Dell) like msn (internet providers?), etc. and excess short cuts? I gave my laptop to my daughter for about a year and recently got it from her and put trend micro on it, scanned and found a trojan and other problems which is what eventually led me here. trying to clean it up with very little know how so your help is very much appreciated. Thank you, vlb
vlb,

I understand that when something is quarantined it's neutralized but can or should it/they be removed?

The whole point of a quarantine is that anything in a quarantine can be restored. If something is wrongly removed, you can restore it. Once you've determined that the removal was correct (nothing broke) you can empty the quarantine folder.

Also another question can I remove things that were put on my laptop (when I got it from Dell) like msn (internet providers?)

Yes. If you don't want something on your computer, get rid of it. I suggest that the first stop you make is add and remove programs in your control panel. Go down the list and uninstall any programs you don't want. If you've got "advertisement" icons on your desktop "click here to install….whatever", you can right click on them and delete or simply drag to the recycle bin.

Please let me have one more HijackThis log and verify that everything is working correctly. Then I have a couple of cleanup steps for you and I'll let you go.
Tomk,

While I was looking thru the highjack this log I noticed 5 had aol in them a 023 aol acs, 4 - 016 dpf. Also 016 dpf shockwave flash object, what is it? Google tool bar, messengers, yahoo I use yahoo for email but never use any form of IM. Thank you for your help and patience, vlb
