I initially posted a topic in the internet forum, however I've since been able to install hijackthis on the infected computer, so I now have a log to post. Basically, I uninstalled the MyWeb toolbar and since then, I've not been able to connect to the internet using IE or Firefox. I'm able to connect to instant messenger so it would seem I have some sort of connection. I'm also able to connect to the internet on my wireless laptop, so it doesn't seem to be a modem problem. I have a hijackthis log and a windows diagnostic log to post here now. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks so much Tomk! I appreciate your help, so I have no problem with waiting for you to respond.

After following your instructions, I'm finally able to connect to the internet again. The computer appears to be running smoothly, except for when I try to reply here. It takes a long time for my reply to go through. I can move around the forum with good speed, but posting replies is a sluggish. I haven't had any pop ups.

Here are the new logs:

Talullah,

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link –> http://forums.whatthetech.com/How_Disable_…ams_t96260.html

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[external image: Posted Image]

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Notes:

1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.
3. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
4. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you – please tell your helper.
5. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.
Combofix displayed during the reboot, advising not to start any programs, however some programs opened during startup (msn, etc.) I'm not sure if this affected the scan, but here is the log:

  • Save this as CFScript.txt and change the "Save as type" to "All Files" and place it on your desktop.

    [external image: Posted Image]
  • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before following the steps below. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
  • Referring to the screenshot above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe.
  • ComboFix will now run a scan on your system. It may reboot your system when it finishes. This is normal.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.
CAUTION: Do not mouse-click ComboFix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Talullah,

COMBOFIX-Script

  • Please open Notepad (Start -> Run -> type notepad in the Open field -> OK) and copy and paste the text present inside the code box below:

    Firefox::
    FF - prefs.js: browser.search.selectedEngine - MyWebSearch
    FF - prefs.js: keyword.URL - hxxp://www.mywebsearch.com/jsp/cfg_redir2.jsp?id=ZUfox000&fl=0&ptb=MiVBUpFL0pfGanyKGEEQnQ&st=kwd&o=kwd&url=http://edits.mywebsearch.com/toolbaredits/barsearch.jhtml&searchfor=
    FF - prefs.js: network.proxy.http_port - 7171

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.

  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Archives
      Mail databases
  • Click on My Computer under Scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As….
  • Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  • Please post this log in your next reply.

One more try.

COMBOFIX-Script

  • Please open Notepad (Start -> Run -> type notepad in the Open field -> OK) and copy and paste the text present inside the code box below:

    Firefox::
    FF - ProfilePath - c:\documents and settings\Shari Olszewski\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\lzca0742.default\
    FF - prefs.js: browser.search.selectedEngine - MyWebSearch
    FF - prefs.js: keyword.URL - hxxp://www.mywebsearch.com/jsp/cfg_redir2.jsp?id=ZUfox000&fl=0&ptb=MiVBUpFL0pfGanyKGEEQnQ&st=kwd&o=kwd&url=http://edits.mywebsearch.com/toolbaredits/barsearch.jhtml&searchfor=
    FF - prefs.js: network.proxy.http_port - 7171

When I follow these directions, combofix asks if I want to download the newest version. I have chosen yes each time. Not sure if this affects the directions you've given, but I just wanted you to know. Talullah,

You did correctly by letting Combofix update. But, that's only half the report.

Please:
  • Right click on START on the left end of your Windows toolbar (lower left corner of your screen)
  • Click on Explore
  • Click on Local Disk (C:) in the left-hand window pane
  • Look for ComboFix.txt in the right-hand window pane and right click on it
  • Put your cursor (arrow) on Open With
  • Move your cursor to the new menu that opens and click on Choose Program…
  • Click on Notepad

When file opens, Copy/Paste text here
Sorry, I don't know how I only got half of the report. Here is the whole thing, according to your directions.

Talullah,

No biggee. Now the good news;

Log looks good :D

Time for some housekeeping
  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK
  • Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.
  • [external image: Posted Image]
The above procedure will:
  • Implement some cleanup procedures.
  • Reset System Restore.

Please re-enable any security that was disabled.

The following is my standard advice for the future. Use what you can and pat yourself on the back for what you're already doing.

Please take time to read Preventing Malware - Tools and Practices for Safe Computing. Very important information for your consideration is contained therein.

I would also suggest you read this:
So how did I get infected in the first place?
by Tony Klein

Also: "How to prevent malware"
by miekiemoes

Please respond back that you understand the above and let me know if you have any questions. Otherwise, this thread will be closed Resolved.
