Dear Experts, I just change a hard drive on my computer and install a brand new Windows XP home. My internet explorer is 7, and i use wireless internet connection "NETGEAR wireless adapter" for internet connection. Long ago when i use my computer, the internet was pretty fast in download and the ping is shown on computer in different program were often below 300. But now… i am getting like 1000 something. I have windows update running, but i am not sure if it has fully updated my computer to the newest version yet… but i think it's pretty much done. Opening website also becomes a bit laggy.. But download speed is pretty quick still (i am not sure about upload >_> since i didn't really pay attention) Also, my old IP address that my old hard drive have… i didn't know about it anymore, but i remember that it was only on the local connection (Marvel Yukon) in my motherboard, but it was set like 192.168.1.200 without actually having it so that my printer can be shared as a server and not have IP change all the time. Is there any way to fix this kind of problem? or did i get a hardware problem or virus infection? Thanks a lot for your help!!!!
Greetings,

Did you load your computer or motherboard drivers after installing XP?

If this is a manufactured computer what is the make and model of the computer?

If custom built what is the make and model of the motherboard?

The current drivers will be available on the manufacturers web site.

Also what Service Pack level are you running?

You can see this via start > Run… > winver
Hi! Well after … me deleting the boot.ini files.. .last time. i decided to upgrade my hard drive and reinstall my Windows XP It is Service Pack 3 already, and i got all the drivers ok, and installed. I was trying out a game that i installed in my old computer, which was working fine. But now, it suddenly have like over a thousand pings… so i was wondering if my internet settings are wrong or… by the time my computer is fully updated… i might have another virus infection… I already have antivirus up and working, and it also has the newest version too. My computer didn't seem to have any problems… Is there anyway that I can know what's up with the computer? Cuz i think the router and stuff are working fine. Does typing in "ipconfig/all" and giving you the information help? Also.. my computer, was brought in Taiwan, and I am now in America, would that have any effect? My Ip is put on Auto search, so i think it changes sometimes throughout the month or week.
Well IP issues are definitely not my specialty. My first question was simply regarding your updates and drivers after a reinstall of Windows. Are you using the same ISP now as you were when things were faster or have you changed your ISP? Have you tried to contact your ISP? They will usually be happy to help your run some tests.
I think it's AT&T… but other people using the same router and modem… their computer work fine. The speed is ok… just the rate it refreshes…. the ping is just too slow… and high i donno how… to fix it, should i take this under the networking section?
There is no need at this point in moving this thread. As I noted this is not a specialty of mine and other Tech Team members will no doubt add their support.

As for myself I still have questions:

For example can you describe your precise setup?

You note:

but other people using the same router and modem… their computer work fine.

Are you on a network?

You also mentioned a difference between previous performance and current. Did you change ISPs or is this the same setup?

In other words did your current configuration ever work satisfactorily?

…
Sorry for not being clear…, cuz i thought i posted in the wrong section of the forum >_> Since a lot of problems happened (like my keyboard not responding.. at first i thought it was due to my computer's motherboard >_> but then i found out that the problem comes from my keyboard) after i did the reinstall of Windows XP For the setup of my computer. All i chance is the hard drive from 250SATA to a brand new 320SATA hard drive. I reinstalled windows XP, and have updated it to the most recent version using internet. My internet comes from my wireless adaptor (Netgear) and is then connected to a AT&T router/ modem (i felt like it's a big machine that does both) Before when i was using my old computer, the internet was quick, and the reaction between server, or ping, were like 60 ~ 300. It hardly go more than 500. But now, the problem is that when i am playing games and clicking stuff on internet, the refresh rate between clicks is very slow, which i think is due to the ping. When i check, it says that my ping is like 1000 something per millisecond. Which i think it should be like 100 ~ 300 normally. I tried closing everything down other than the program that send me the ping number… but the ping didn't change at all.. So i was wondering did i miss any steps after i finish installing windows XP into my computer or… it's because of my wireless adaptor (which i think… i just had it for like 8 months. Or is it due to some other problems like virus … or malware again eating up all my internet >_>. Thanks a lot for your help.!!
No problem. If you connect via an Ethernet cable rather than wireless are your results the same? Also: Did you reinstall the drivers for the wireless adapter?
Well… my comp is on 3rd floor, and the modem is on first floor… so it might be hard… I will try to see if i can get a line to test out the plug. Because if with line the ping is fast.. that means my wireless adapter is the problem correct? Yes i have installed the driver for my wireless adapter
Yes. That is one test. Also just get near the modem and try the wireless. The third floor might be the issue here. Were you always at this distance even when the connection was faster?
Well… long ago, my old computer is on the third floor. And plus the signal from the wireless adapter says excellent… so i think the connection is ok. I think it's just the modem that isn't stable… because when i tried today. it turned out… okie >_> for some reason. We have our modem set password, so i don't think so outsiders can use it. Do you know anyway to make like the ping of the router/ modem faster or stable?
At this point I would ask if you could provide the exact modem/router model (there should be a label on the bottom or somewhere). Also who is you specific ISP and do you know what you service plan is? I know you said AT&T but for example they bought out BellSouth which happens to be my ISP and I have a 6.0M service package. Can you provide these details? I would also reiterate calling your ISP and let them run some tests on your connection.
Sorry for the long reply … it (well i think that's what the machine is called) is 3800HGV-B from 2Wire Gateway. i think the internet problem… has somehow been fix… I went and ask my local cellphone company, they he said that our area have several apartments, which if using cable or internet during times when a lot of people goes on, they might turn out to be a bit slower. so i guess that was the reason >_>. Actually.. i also have a problem to address….. Is there anyway for you to help me check my CPU's temperature while running microsoft XP on at the same time? There are some crashes (or freeze… where my whole keyboard, mouse, screen, just stops, and if speaker open and playing music, it continues on with the same tone) …, and it also happen in my old hard drive (that was busted >_>) I think the reason… could only be overheat or motherboard problem… Also, just a bit more info on my computer… The crashing didn't happen when i was using it in Taiwan…. but after i move to america…. it started to happen… Is it because of the dry weather in california that is causing this problem?
