[Resolved] possible isass.exe or lsass.exe infection

Hello, i seem to be having problems with a isass.exe or lsass.exe infection. My computer is running slow and when i tried to log to windows on a few times before my password would not work. It also seems as though i can't open the windows explorer. Everytime i try to open the My computer folder i get an error message. Any Help?

I can start my computer up now and log in with no problem but the windows explorer will not run. i get an error message every time i log in. and the explorer won't open and my toolbar and start menu don't come up and i am left with a blank desktop. The only way i can open a program is by entering the task manager and running a new process. I Also cannot get to hijackthis to run a log. It seems as though nothing will open except firefox when i try to run a new process. everything comes up with an error message similar to this one [external image: Posted Image] hope that helps

Hello.

I am sorry to say this, but you have a File infector VIRUT infection. The only way to proceed with this infection is to format the computer and start all over.

Your system is infected with a polymorphic file infector called Virut and also has IRC bot functionality. Virut is capable of infecting all the machine's executable files (.exe) and screensaver files (.scr) and also web pages (.html and .htm). However, the problem is that the virus has a number of bugs in its code, and as a result, it may misinfect a proportion of executable files and therefore, the files are corrupted beyond repair. In addition, when it infects, sometimes it will destroy the file it tries to latch onto.

For these reasons, you really can't truly fix Virut. You will need to reinstall and format the operating system on this machine. As of now, security experts suggest that a clean Reformat is the only way to clean the infection and it is the only way to return the machine to its normal working state.

Backup all your documents and important items (personal data, work documents, pictures etc..) only. DO NOT backup any executable files (softwares) and screensavers (*.scr) or any web pages (*.html or *.htm). It attempts to infect any accessed .exe or .scr or .html/.htm files by appending itself to the executable.

Also, try to avoid backing up compressed files (zip/cab/rar) files that have .exe or .scr files inside them. Virut can penetrate and infect .exe files inside compressed files too.

Thanks for doing all you could. I started it up this morning and the explorer came up and the desktop appears as normal. I also haven't received any of the error messages that i showed the picture of before. I know there probably isn't anything you could do but i will send another log your way.

Hello. Good, that it's better, but you still have the file infector Virut on your computer and only way to get rid of it is to format. I'm sorry but that's the only way to proceed. With Regards, Extremeboy

I understand that i have to reformat the computer but i don't know how go about doing that. I do not have the operating system CD. When I purchased the computer Windows XP was already installed and no disc was provided. The link you provided in the reply is dead. Any help is apprecated as always.

Regarding Format, I would start another topic over here.

Note: If your using an IBM, HP, Compaq or Dell machine, you may not have an original XP CD Disk. By policy Microsoft no longer allows OEM manufactures to include the original Windows XP CD-ROM on computers sold with Windows preinstalled. Instead, most computers manufactured and sold by OEM vendors come with a vendor-specific recovery disk or recovery partition for performing a clean "factory restore". See Technology Advisory Recovery Media

If you don't have a recover disk, then you may have a Recovery Partition. A recovery partition is used by some OEM manufacturers (Dell, HP, IBM, Gateway) instead of a recovery disk to store a complete copy of the hard disk's factory default contents for easy restoration. This consists of a hidden bootable partition containing various system recovery tools, including full recovery of the preinstalled Windows XP partition that will allow you to restore the computer to the state it was in when you first purchased it. The recovery software will then re-hide its own partition after creating a new partition and installing the software to it. You will lose all data and have to reinstall all programs that you added afterwards. This includes all security updates from Microsoft so you will need to download/install them again.

Recovery partitions may only work with a start-up floppy disk or the user may be prompted immediately after the "Out Of Box Experience" (OOBE) to create backup CD-R disks for the software on the hard drive image for future use. Once the CD's are made, the Operating System, Drivers, or Applications can be reinstalled using the files on the hard drive or the backup CDs. Before using a recovery partition make sure you back up all your data, photos, etc to another source such as a CD or external hard drive.

Some built in recovery partitions can be accessed by hitting Ctrl+F11, just F11 or F10 during bios startup. Others like those used by IBM Thinkpads will display a message at bootup instructing you to press F11 to boot from the recovery partition. For more information, see Understanding Partition recovery.

Doing a quick Google search on recovery partitions, you can find information specifically related to the manufacturer of your machine.
