Hello folks! I hope you can help me. According to Windows Defender, I have the TrojanDownloader:Win32/Renos.BAH
I'm sure you know what it does with the browser (pop-ups, bogus security alerts), but it's even freezing the system on startup, especially when Windows Defender trys to remove/quarantine it. It seems to get especially mad & do this when I try to do a repair off the WinXP disk on boot, which freezes too at the point of entering the admin password.

After it's messed with, it takes numerous attempts at restarting Windows, after numerous freezes & even crashes, to finally get the Windows Defender to quarantine it, then all runs well.

Win-Defender currently has it quarantined (until the next restart).

Thanks much!

Edit: 4/28/09; I reset the system to a backup before the above problems, & Windows Defender doesn't show the above trojan anymore. I ran a new HijackThis & wondered if it looks clean now. Please review. Thanks again, Mike

Hi MikeBoa,

:welcome:

My name is Tomk. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can take a while to research, so please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:

  • I will be working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for the issues on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

You're looking good. Let's do a quick checkup.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two.

Then

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.
  • Note: If you receive a notice that some of the items couldn't be removed, that they have been added to the delete on reboot list, please reboot (shut down your computer then restart it).
Also "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Hello, Tom! My machine was freezing & crashing/rebooting when doing a Chkdsk function or memory defrag (with System Mechanic 6.0), or even sometimes just opening the Windows control panel.
It also has been freezing when doing a nightly backup w/ Acronis TrueImage (after the backup has completed it seems).

Seems better now after runnin' the scan & remove w/ M-warebytes'. Will see how it does tonight w/ the backup. Hopefully it won't freeze. Thank you much! Logs below. Mike

How's things running now?

Please post me a new HijackThis log.
Tom, Here are those logs. It seems to be runnin much better & quicker. No hard drive errors showing now on the chkdsk anyway.

Couldn't open my Outlook Express mail, but that seems to be an issue w/ DBNotify & requires a reboot it seems to get into mail.

Thanks again, Mike

MikeBoa,

Log looks good :D

Cleanup

  • Double click on OTMoveIt3.exe to run it.
  • Click on CleanUp!
  • When done, you will be prompted to restart your computer. Please restart your computer.

You need to create a new Clean restore point:

Click Start Menu > Run > copy and paste

%SystemRoot%\System32\restore\rstrui.exe

Press OK. Choose Create a Restore Point then click Next. Name it (something you'll remember) and click Create, when the confirmation screen shows the restore point has been created click Close.

Remove all previous Restore Points
Click Start Menu > Run > copy and paste

cleanmgr

You may be asked to choose drive. Choose C: At top, click on More Options tab. Click Clean up… button in the System Restore box. Click on Yes button. When finished, click on Cancel button to exit.

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Check "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, Uncheck "Show hidden files and folders."
Check "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

The following is my standard advice for the future. Use what you can and pat yourself on the back for what you're already doing.

Please take time to read Preventing Malware - Tools and Practices for Safe Computing. Very important information for your consideration is contained therein.

I would also suggest you read this:
So how did I get infected in the first place?
by Tony Klein

Also: "How to prevent malware"
by miekiemoes

Please respond back that you understand the above and let me know if you have any questions. Otherwise, this thread will be closed Resolved.
Tom, Everything seems much better & the above is completed, however I did have a problem with Windows reloading & had to reboot. Could you check my HJT log again to be sure. Thanks much! Mike

MikeBoa,

Can you explain more about the "windows reloading" issue? I'm not sure that I understand what happened.

Meanwhile, let's get a deeper look,

Please download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links and save it to your desktop.
    • DDS.scr
    • DDS.pif
  • Disable any script blocking protection (How to Disable your Security Programs)
  • Double click DDS icon to run the tool (may take up to 3 minutes to run)
  • When done, DDS.txt will open.
  • After a few moments, attach.txt will open in a second window.
  • Save both reports to your desktop.
—————————————————
  • Post the contents of the DDS.txt report in your next reply
  • Attach the Attach.txt report to your post by scroling down to the Attachments area and then clicking Browse. Browse to where you saved the file, and click Open and the click UPLOAD.
Thanks Tom, Seems pretty much ok w/ Windows now, except that it seems to take pretty long for my XP to load & to shut down. Could just be that I have a lot of programs loading & then running(?). Also, on startup sometime I'm missing like the sound volume (speaker symbol) & other icons on the right-click section of the task bar (to the left of the time of day), but other times these icons load fine. Anyway, here is that log & file (attached) that you requested: DDS (Ver_09-03-16.01) - NTFSx86 Run by [removed] at 15:45:04.32 on Sat 05/02/2009 Internet Explorer: 8.0.6001.18702 Microsoft Windows XP Professional 5.1.2600.3.1252.1.1033.18.2046.1324 [GMT -5:00] AV: CA Anti-Virus *On-access scanning enabled* (Updated) FW: CA Personal Firewall *enabled* ============== Running Processes =============== C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost -k DcomLaunch svchost.exe C:\Program Files\Windows Defender\MsMpEng.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe -k netsvcs C:\Program Files\Ahead\InCD\InCDsrv.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe -k WudfServiceGroup svchost.exe svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exe C:\Program Files\CA\SharedComponents\HIPSEngine\UmxCfg.exe C:\Program Files\CA\SharedComponents\HIPSEngine\UmxFwHlp.exe C:\Program Files\CA\SharedComponents\HIPSEngine\UmxPol.exe C:\Program Files\CA\SharedComponents\HIPSEngine\UmxAgent.exe C:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXE C:\Program Files\CA\CA Internet Security Suite\CA Personal Firewall\capfsem.exe svchost.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\ArcSoft\Connection Service\Bin\ACService.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Acronis\Schedule2\schedul2.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\bin\AppleMobileDeviceService.exe C:\Program Files\Bonjour\mDNSResponder.exe C:\Program Files\Windows Defender\MSASCui.exe C:\Program Files\CA\CA Internet Security Suite\CA Anti-Virus\ISafe.exe C:\Program Files\CA\CA Internet Security Suite\CA Anti-Spam\QSP-5.1.18.0\QOELoader.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe -k HTTPFilter C:\Program Files\CA\SharedComponents\PPRT\bin\ITMRTSVC.exe C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunesHelper.exe C:\Program Files\Microsoft IntelliPoint\ipoint.exe C:\WINDOWS\System\CmFlywav.exe C:\Program Files\CA\CA Internet Security Suite\cctray\cctray.exe C:\Program Files\CA\CA Internet Security Suite\CA Anti-Virus\CAVRID.exe C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin\jqs.exe C:\Program Files\CA\CA Internet Security Suite\CA Personal Firewall\capfasem.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\ArcSoft\Connection Service\Bin\ACDaemon.exe C:\Program Files\ACT\ACT for Windows\Act8.exe C:\Program Files\Acronis\TrueImageHome\TimounterMonitor.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Acronis\Schedule2\schedhlp.exe C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player\WMPNSCFG.exe C:\Program Files\Google\GoogleToolbarNotifier\GoogleToolbarNotifier.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\ctfmon.exe C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL$ACT7\Binn\sqlservr.exe C:\Program Files\PANA LINK\Panalnks.exe C:\Program Files\Microsoft IntelliPoint\dpupdchk.exe C:\Program Files\CA\CA Internet Security Suite\CA Anti-Spyware\CAPPActiveProtection.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\nvsvc32.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe -k imgsvc C:\Program Files\Common Files\Ulead Systems\DVD\ULCDRSvr.exe C:\Program Files\CA\CA Internet Security Suite\CA Anti-Virus\VetMsg.exe C:\Program Files\CA\CA Internet Security Suite\ccprovsp.exe C:\Program Files\iPod\bin\iPodService.exe C:\Program Files\CA\CA Internet Security Suite\CA Anti-Spyware\PPCtlPriv.exe C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe C:\Documents and Settings\Hagens\Desktop\dds.pif ============== Pseudo HJT Report =============== uStart Page = hxxp://netscape.aol.com/ uSearch Page = hxxp://www.google.com uSearch Bar = hxxp://www.google.com/ie uSearchMigratedDefaultURL = hxxp://www.google.com/search?q={searchTerms}&sourceid=ie7&rls=com.microsoft:en-US&ie=utf8&oe=utf8 uInternet Settings,ProxyOverride = *.local uSearchAssistant = hxxp://www.google.com/ie uSearchURL,(Default) = hxxp://www.google.com/search?q=%s mSearchAssistant = hxxp://www.google.com/ie BHO: Adobe PDF Link Helper: {18df081c-e8ad-4283-a596-fa578c2ebdc3} - MikeBoa,

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link –> http://forums.whatthetech.com/How_Disable_…ams_t96260.html

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[external image: Posted Image]

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Notes:

1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.
3. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
4. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you – please tell your helper.
5. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.
Tom, When I booted up for the 1st time today & came to this site, my computer froze, & kept doing so, requiring reboots. I'm sorry, it's probably a no-no, but out of desperation I ran a Malwarebytes scan (log is below). No freezing now (so far anyway). It seems when I put my CA anti-virus on snooze, it still interferes w/ installing & running Combofix. It removes it by quarantining Win32/SillyAutorun.AWH. The only other option to get CA anti-virus out of the way would be to uninstall it & reinstall later. Given the below, how should I proceed? Thank you. Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware 1.36 Database version: 2071 Windows 5.1.2600 Service Pack 3 5/3/2009 2:33:49 PM mbam-log-2009-05-03 (14-33-49).txt Scan type: Full Scan (C:\|D:\|) Objects scanned: 76304 Time elapsed: 25 minute(s), 42 second(s) Memory Processes Infected: 0 Memory Modules Infected: 0 Registry Keys Infected: 0 Registry Values Infected: 0 Registry Data Items Infected: 2 Folders Infected: 0 Files Infected: 0 Memory Processes Infected: (No malicious items detected) Memory Modules Infected: (No malicious items detected) Registry Keys Infected: (No malicious items detected) Registry Values Infected: (No malicious items detected) Registry Data Items Infected: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\scrfile\shell\open\command\ (Broken.OpenCommand) -> Bad: (NOTEPAD.EXE %1) Good: ("%1" /S) -> Quarantined and deleted successfully. MikeBoa,

Please attempt to run ComboFix this way:

A. Please download ComboFix by sUBs from HERE or HERE directly to your Desktop.

Note: If you already have ComboFix on your machine, please DELETE it from your desktop before downloading the newest version.

B. Now we must disable some of your security programs so that they do not interfere with the running of our tools:

http://forums.whatthetech.com/How_to_Disab…ams_t89859.html

C.Go to [external image: Posted Image] -> Run -> copy/paste the following single line command in the runbox & click OK

"%userprofile%\desktop\combofix.exe" /killall

[external image: Posted Image]
  • DO NOT USE your computer for any other purpose while ComboFix is running.
  • ComboFix may restart your computer, this is normal.
  • When finished, it will produce a log, ComboFix.txt.
  • Please post ComboFix.txt in your next reply along with a new HijackThis log.

Tom, I ran ComboFix (log is below) but had a few apparent problems: 1) It could not install the Recovery Console because there was no internet connect (I believe it cut off the connection previously).
2) when it ran & went to reboot Windows, Windows hung at "Windows is shutting down" & I waited for about 15 min & then manually rebooted with the physical button on my computer.

Typing is now moving real slow, like something else is running & causing it, but maybe it's just this post. Will see.
