I recently started a new job and "inherited" a computer from the guy I replaced. Well I think it has some issues. It has given me an error about "c:\windows\system32\scan.exe". It also has Comodo firewall. Lately it has popped up with stuff like 3832.exe trying to access stuff. There have been several other #.exe files do the same. It has popped up with stuff about programs trying to access the screen directly for screenshots and such. I'm not sure if someone is trying to hijack this PC or what. My HJT log is below. Thank you for your help.

Josh

Still need help.
Hi okieherper,

:welcome:

My name is Tomk. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can take a while to research, so please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:

  • I will be working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for the issues on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two.

Then

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.
  • Note: If you receive a notice that some of the items couldn't be removed, that they have been added to the delete on reboot list, please reboot (shut down your computer then restart it).
Also "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
The boot time was much quicker than usual. I think ATF cleaner helped a lot. I've always used CCleaner, but it seems that ATF cleared more. One strange thing that has started is that Firefox opens on boot. It didn't do that when I first started here. Also, when I boot, I have to choose between the users Conylee$, Quail(which is me, I raise quail at work), and Guest. I need to ask someone about the Conylee$. The strange thing is that I've only had to choose which user lately. It never prompted me to do that before unless I logged in with safe mode. When I did log in with safe mode, the only users was Admin. and Quail. Either way, thank you for helping me and here are my 2 logs:

Below is my Kaspersky report. I want to add that as I type this, I have a process called 3632.exe running. Once in a while I get pop-ups saying that there is an error with scan.exe. All I can do is click "ok" and the error goes away for about 10-15 seconds. The only way I've been able to fix this is by rebooting. It's only done this 2 or 3 times, but all have been this week. As for the #.exe files. My firewall will pop-up saying "#.exe is attempting to access _____." The blank has included scan.exe, "the internet", etc. I saw that Kaspersky found several threats. Hopefully one of those is causing the issues and we can get this running somewhat smooth again. ——————————————————————————– KASPERSKY ONLINE SCANNER 7.0 REPORT Wednesday, April 29, 2009 Operating System: Microsoft Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3 (build 2600) Kaspersky Online Scanner version: 7.0.26.13 Program database last update: Wednesday, April 29, 2009 18:54:17 Records in database: 2097149 ——————————————————————————– Scan settings: Scan using the following database: extended Scan archives: yes Scan mail databases: yes Scan area - My Computer: A:\ C:\ D:\ E:\ Scan statistics: Files scanned: 89683 Threat name: 10 Infected objects: 32 Suspicious objects: 44 Duration of the scan: 02:49:47 File name / Threat name / Threats count c:\windows\system32\remxtqc.dll/c:\windows\system32\remxtqc.dll Infected: Backdoor.Win32.Agent.afxc 1 C:\Documents and Settings\Karen\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\default\exxk4or2.slt\Mail\pop.ou-1.edu\Junk Suspicious: Trojan-Spy.HTML.Fraud.gen 8 C:\Documents and Settings\Karen\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\default\exxk4or2.slt\Mail\pop.ou-1.edu\Junk Infected: Trojan-Spy.HTML.Paylap.dl 1 C:\Documents and Settings\Karen\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\default\exxk4or2.slt\Mail\pop.ou-1.edu\Junk Infected: Trojan-Spy.HTML.Paylap.m 1 C:\Documents and Settings\Karen\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\default\exxk4or2.slt\Mail\pop.ou-1.edu\Trash Suspicious: Trojan-Spy.HTML.Fraud.gen 5 C:\Documents and Settings\Karen\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\Default User\i5062m12.slt\Mail\pop.ou-1.edu\Junk Suspicious: Trojan-Spy.HTML.Fraud.gen 8 C:\Documents and Settings\Karen\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\Default User\i5062m12.slt\Mail\pop.ou-1.edu\Junk Infected: Trojan-Spy.HTML.Paylap.dl 1 C:\Documents and Settings\Karen\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\Default User\i5062m12.slt\Mail\pop.ou-1.edu\Junk Infected: Trojan-Spy.HTML.Paylap.m 1 C:\Documents and Settings\Karen\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\Default User\i5062m12.slt\Mail\pop.ou-1.edu\Trash Suspicious: Trojan-Spy.HTML.Fraud.gen 5 C:\Documents and Settings\Karen\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\Default User\i5062m12.slt\Mail\pop.ou.edu\Junk Suspicious: Trojan-Spy.HTML.Fraud.gen 8 C:\Documents and Settings\Karen\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\Default User\i5062m12.slt\Mail\pop.ou.edu\Junk Infected: Trojan-Spy.HTML.Paylap.dl 1 C:\Documents and Settings\Karen\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\Default User\i5062m12.slt\Mail\pop.ou.edu\Junk Infected: Trojan-Spy.HTML.Paylap.m 1 C:\Documents and Settings\Karen\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\Default User\i5062m12.slt\Mail\pop.ou.edu\Trash Suspicious: Trojan-Spy.HTML.Fraud.gen 10 C:\Documents and Settings\Karen\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles\Default User\i5062m12.slt\Mail\pop.ou.edu\Trash Infected: Trojan-Spy.HTML.Paylap.m 1 C:\Program Files\Common Files\wen3.exe Infected: Trojan.Win32.AntiAV.bbp 1 C:\Program Files\Symantec AntiVirus\cte.exe Infected: Backdoor.Win32.Hupigon.gqbd 1 C:\System Volume Information\_restore{E87A81FB-FDCF-4B92-A20C-951710F82D7C}\RP1364\A0282081.exe Infected: Backdoor.Win32.Hupigon.bmfk 1 C:\System Volume Information\_restore{E87A81FB-FDCF-4B92-A20C-951710F82D7C}\RP1365\A0282183.exe Infected: Backdoor.Win32.PcClient.ajcc 1 C:\System Volume Information\_restore{E87A81FB-FDCF-4B92-A20C-951710F82D7C}\RP1367\A0282318.exe Infected: not-a-virus:NetTool.Win32.TCPScan.a 1 C:\System Volume Information\_restore{E87A81FB-FDCF-4B92-A20C-951710F82D7C}\RP1368\A0282349.exe Infected: not-a-virus:NetTool.Win32.TCPScan.a 1 C:\System Volume Information\_restore{E87A81FB-FDCF-4B92-A20C-951710F82D7C}\RP1371\A0282580.exe Infected: not-a-virus:NetTool.Win32.TCPScan.a 1 C:\System Volume Information\_restore{E87A81FB-FDCF-4B92-A20C-951710F82D7C}\RP1371\A0282581.exe Infected: HackTool.Win32.Agent.nd 1 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\ctvhcst.exe _k vetvcs Infected: Backdoor.Win32.Hupigon.gqbd 1 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\RcmxtoC.dll Infected: Backdoor.Win32.Agent.afxc 1 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\RemxtqC.dll Infected: Backdoor.Win32.Agent.afxc 1 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\RfmitpC.dll Infected: Backdoor.Win32.Agent.afxc 1 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\RgmjtsC.dll Infected: Backdoor.Win32.Agent.afxc 1 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\RgmvtwC.dll Infected: Backdoor.Win32.Agent.afxc 1 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\RimttcC.dll Infected: Backdoor.Win32.Agent.afxc 1 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\RjmothC.dll Infected: Backdoor.Win32.Agent.afxc 1 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\RnmctjC.dll Infected: Backdoor.Win32.Agent.afxc 1 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\RnmktpC.dll Infected: Backdoor.Win32.Agent.afxc 1 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\RombtwC.dll Infected: Backdoor.Win32.Agent.afxc 1 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\RpmqttC.dll Infected: Backdoor.Win32.Agent.afxc 1 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\RsmrtwC.dll Infected: Backdoor.Win32.Agent.afxc 1 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\RwmntgC.dll Infected: Backdoor.Win32.Agent.afxc 1 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\RwmvtoC.dll Infected: Backdoor.Win32.Agent.afxc 1 C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\RymntkC.dll Infected: Backdoor.Win32.Agent.afxc 1 The selected area was scanned.
okieherper,

Your computer appears to have been infected by a backdoor trojan. These programs have the ability to steal passwords and other information from your system. If you use your computer for sensitive purposes such as internet banking then I recommend you take the following steps immediately:
  • Use another, uninfected computer to change all your internet passwords, especially ones with financial implications such as banks, paypal, ebay, etc. You should also change the passwords for any other site you use.
  • Call your bank(s), credit card company or any other institution which may be affected and advise them that your login/password or credit card information may have been stolen and ask what steps to take with regard to your account.
  • Consider what other private information could possibly have been taken from your computer and take appropriate steps
This infection can almost certainly be cleaned, but as the malware could be configured to run any program a remote attacker requires, it will be impossible to be 100% sure that the machine is clean, if this is unacceptable to you then you should consider reformatting the system partition and reinstalling Windows as this is the only 100% sure answer.

If you wish to reformat then please let me know in your next response, I'll now continue with instructions for cleaning.

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link –> http://forums.whatthetech.com/How_Disable_…ams_t96260.html

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[external image: Posted Image]

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Notes:

1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.
3. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
4. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you – please tell your helper.
5. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.
I started ComboFix and left for a while. When I got back, Firefox was opened and my firewall was back and stopping stuff. So I promptly closed both and CF appeared to complete fine. Here is the log.

okieherper,

FW: COMODO Firewall *enabled*
FW: ZoneAlarm Firewall *disabled*

You have two firewalls. I reccomend that you uninstall one of them.

Please go to http://virusscan.jotti.org , click on Browse, and upload the following file for analysis:

c:\windows\SYSTEM32\RambtsC.dll <===this file

Then click Submit. Allow the file to be scanned, and then please copy and paste the results here for me to see.

COMBOFIX-Script

  • Please open Notepad (Start -> Run -> type notepad in the Open field -> OK) and copy and paste the text present inside the code box below:

    File::

    Folder::

    Registry::
    [-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\mountpoints2\F]

  • Save this as CFScript.txt and change the "Save as type" to "All Files" and place it on your desktop.

    [external image: Posted Image]
  • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before following the steps below. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
  • Referring to the screenshot above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe.
  • ComboFix will now run a scan on your system. It may reboot your system when it finishes. This is normal.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.
CAUTION: Do not mouse-click ComboFix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
Here ya go.

Just wanted to let you know that I have to go out of town for a few days. I won't be back on this computer until Tuesday. Just didn't want the thread to get closed because you thought I had abandoned it. Josh
okieherper,

I still need that report from Jotti on that file, meanwhile, I'd like you to scan a few more files at Jotti also:
c:\program files\Common Files\wen4.exe
c:\program files\Common Files\Serial.exe
c:\program files\Common Files\wen1.exe
Ok I'm back in town now. Thanks for being patient and not closing my thread. I can't locate "c:\windows\SYSTEM32\RambtsC.dll" to do the jotti scan. I even did a search for the file and found nothing. There are several similar files in ….\common files. They are wena.exe, wen4.exe, wen1.exe, wenb.exe, and wend.exe. Serial.exe isn't there. This is for wen4.exe Scan taken on 05 May 2009 13:22:03 (GMT) A-Squared Found Trojan-PWS.Win32.QQPass!IK AntiVir Found TR/Hijacker.Gen ArcaVir Found nothing Avast Found Win32:Trojan-gen {Other} AVG • Please open Notepad (Start -> Run -> type notepad in the Open field -> OK) and copy and paste the text present inside the code box below:

    File::
    c:\program files\Common Files\wena.exe
    c:\program files\Common Files\wen4.exe
    c:\program files\Common Files\wen1.exe
    c:\program files\Common Files\wenb.exe
    c:\program files\Common Files\wend.exe
    c:\program files\Common Files\Serial.exe

    Folder::

    Registry::

    Driver::

That may cause it to stall.

okieherper,

Let's check out some more files:

Please go to http://virusscan.jotti.org , click on Browse, and upload the following file for analysis:

c:\windows\system32\Down(1).exe <===this file

Then click Submit. Allow the file to be scanned, and then please copy and paste the results here for me to see.

Also check these:
c:\windows\system32\drivers\hihmt.sys
c:\windows\system32\Hide.exe
c:\windows\system32\0005ca37.sys

Please download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a NotePad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.

Double click on SDFix.exe. It should automatically extract a folder called SDFix to your system drive (usually C:\). Please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key repeatedly;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
  • Choose your usual user account.
  • Open the SDFix folder and double click on RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y and press Enter to begin the script.
  • It will start cleaning your PC and then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any key to restart the PC.
  • Your system will take longer than normal to restart as the fixtool will be removing files.
  • When the desktop loads the Fixtool will complete the removal and display Finished.
  • Press any key to end the script and to load your desktop icons.
  • A text file should automatically open, so please copy the contents and post them here. We also need you to post a new HijackThis log
