Hi Two Dogs,

Welcome to TomCoyote Forums. Let's see what we can do to clear out the problems you're having. This will take several steps, so let's get started.

Since I'm not sure what that Computer Associates program you're running covers with regard to Anti-Virus or Firewall protection, I recommend starting with some FREE online scans for viruses, worms and trojans.

Follow the links below for the scans. Each site will install a file on your computer to run their scan; that is safe. The first two are general scans, and the third is specifically for trojans. They should be able to clean just about anything they find, but if there is something they can't clean, write down the FULL PATHS AND FILENAMES and post them with your next log.

Be sure to check the box to FIX ANYTHING FOUND, and be sure the scan covers your ENTIRE COMPUTER.

http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/
http://scan.sygatetech.com/pretrojanscan.html

Before we get started with the actual cleanup, you should MOVE "HijackThis.exe" to a PERMANENT folder (such as C:\HJT). When HJT fixes anything, it makes backups in the folder it's in. Since Temporary folders get cleaned out now and then (the files get DELETED), you WOULD NOT want your backups there (any sub-folder of a temporary folder is also a TEMPORARY FOLDER). Those backups would be VITAL to restoring your system if something went wrong in the FIX process! That does NOT happen often, but you would NOT want to be the one it happened to.

Next, open your Control Panel and click on the "Add/Remove programs" icon. If there are any programs you DO NOT BOTH RECOGNIZE AND WANT, DELETE THEM! Especially, look for such items as "Lop" and "NicTec," or any variations on those names! You also have "Weather Bug" on your system. That program is associated with spyware, and I recommend removing it at this time. However I can only advise on this, it's up to you. I can, if you wish, provide a link to a FREEWARE weather program that is CLEAN- no ads or spyware. Let me know. If you're not sure about an item, post the name here and we'll check it out for you. (DO NOT delete your Windows and Internet Explorer updates, which are listed with a "Q" and a bunch of numbers.) Then reboot your computer.

Now let's get to some specific problems. You have several that usually get priority, so I'm going to start with what's probably the worst of the lot and work down the totem pole.

Download this special tool to any convenient PERMANENT folder and run it: http://www.downloads.subratam.org/VX2Finder.exe

1-Click on "Click To find Find VX2.Abetterinternet"

2-Delete all files found. You will get a message about "cannot delete this one" matching the same name in the Guardian Key.

3-Click "Open regedit"; this will take you right to the Guardian Key (no need to search for it)

4-Highlight "Guardian", Right-Click and choose "Security/permissions"; you'll get another window with "advanced"…
DESELECT (UNCHECK) the lower box with "Inheritable Permissions"
Hit "OK" and then "REMOVE" on the following security prompts. Then REBOOT your computer.

5-On restart use VX2Finder again, select and delete the last file; clicking on "User Agent$" will remove that entry from the registry.

6-Click "Open regedit" again. This time, RESTORE the check in "Inheritable Permissions"

7-Click "Guardian.reg" in VX2Finder; this DELETES the Guardian Key.

8-Use "Find" again; this time it should produce a clean log of blank values.

9-Click "Restore Policy" to restore the Debug policy that was altered by the malware app.

Now reboot, run a fresh HijackThis log and post it here so we can go to the next step of the cleanup.
Ok. Did everything you posted. There was no "Open regedit" onVX2 Finder. Could not remove these:Troj BuddyLinkA c:\Documents and Settings\Higdon\Local Settings\Temp\rs.exe

Troj Agent BK c:\windows\Temp\winhost 32.exe

Tri/Downloader GK c:\ Documents and Settings\Higdon\local settings\Temp\THI 556A.temp\twaintec.cat

Here is my scan. I will be back in a couple of hrs. got to mow yard before rain. Thanks alot for your and help.

Hi Two Dogs,

Sorry I was so long getting back to you- I was watching President Reagan's funeral service (my old outfit, the US Air Force Band, was playing for it).

OK, we'll get those things you mentioned taken care of in just a bit. First, download and run Spybot-Search&Destroy and Ad-Aware; they are the standard programs for finding and cleaning crapware off your system, and can also help prevent its downloading and installation in some cases. Here are links to both programs, and instructions for their use.

Get Spybot - Search & Destroy from http://security.kolla.de (This is the NEW Version 1.3)
Get AdAware 6 from http://www.lavasoft.de/support/download

Download and install these programs in their own PERMANENT folders if you don't already have them. If you do have them, make sure they are UPDATED AND CONFIGURED AS DESCRIBED.

To run Spybot S&D:

After installing first press "Online", click on "Search for Updates", then select all updates. Beside the download button is a little down-pointed arrow, which gives you a choice of several download sites; select one of the servers listed (the Australian server usually works well). Now, press "Download Updates." If that site doesn't work or you get an error message, try a different server.

When the updates are finished, close your browser and ALL WINDOWS EXCEPT THE ONE SPYBOT IS RUNNING IN, then press 'Check for Problems'; THE SCAN WILL TAKE SEVERAL MINUTES. Have SpyBot remove all it finds THAT ARE MARKED IN RED. When it's finished, reboot your system.

Then, Run ADAWARE:

Before you scan with AdAware, check for updates of the reference file by using the "webupdate" button at the lower right of the panel. The current ref file should read at least 01R316 11.06.2004 or a higher number/later date. Updates for this program come out frequently to keep up with new malware. THIS IS CRITICAL; updating is as important as installing these programs.

Then ……..
Make sure the following settings are made and on ——-"ON=GREEN"
From main window :Click "Start" then " Activate in-depth scan"

then……
click "Use custom scanning options>Customize" and have these options ON: "Scan within archives" ,"Scan active processes","Scan registry", "Deep scan registry" ,"Scan my IE Favorites for banned URL" and "Scan my host-files"

then………
go to settings(the gear icon on top of AdAware)>Tweak>Scanning engine and click "Unload recognized processes during scanning" ………..then…….."Cleaning engine" and "Let windows remove files in use at next reboot"

then…… click "proceed" to save your settings. To scan, click NEXT. This scan will also take several minutes.

When the scan is finished, mark everything for removal and get rid of it. (Right-click the window and choose"select all" from the drop down menu) then press "next" and then say yes to the prompt, "do you want to remove all these entries?" Reboot again.

After you have run them, run HijackThis. CLOSE YOUR BROWSER AND ALL WINDOWS EXCEPT THE ONE IT'S RUNNING IN, and put a check in the box at the left end of ONLY the lines below. (Some of them may not still be there if you have run those programs. If they're gone, go on to the next item.) Then click on FIX CHECKED and let it run.

When the program finishes, reboot into SAFE MODE (press F8 after the BIOS loads). Be sure you are configured to SHOW ALL FILES AND FOLDERS, including System and Hidden Files. If you don't know how to do that, follow this link http://www.xtra.co.nz/help/0,,4155-1916458,00.html and follow the step-by-step directions for your Windows version.

Now find and DELETE the following file and folders (IF they are still there):

DELETE FILE
C:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS\Higdon\Local Settings\Temp\rs.exe
C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\bridge.dll

DELETE ENTIRE FOLDER
C:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS\Higdon\local settings\Temp\THI 556A.temp\
C:\PROGRAM FILES\ONCELO~1\ <—-This folder name starts with "ONCELO" and contains more letters and/or numbers.
C:\Program Files\Common files\WinTools\

While still in Safe Mode, empty your Windows Temp folder. (DELETE THE FILES ONLY, NOT THE SUB-FOLDERS THAT ARE THERE.) Then from CONTROL PANEL, choose INTERNET OPTIONS and click on DELETE FILES in the section "Temporary Internet Files," put a check in the box "Delete all offline content" and click OK to confirm.

If any of those files are "Read-Only," you may need to right-click on them and choose "Properties" from the bottom of the gray menu that opens, then remove any checks in the "Read-Only" and "System" boxes and click OK to confirm. Then you should be able to delete them.

Now reboot into Normal Mode and post a fresh log so we can see what else may be needed.
OK. Think we got it. Running great. See what you think. About the band at Rons funeral yesterday, they where great. You must be very proud. My daughter is entertaining the idea of trying to maybe see if she can get into the Air Force band. She is a sax and guitar player, graduates next year and also will be the new drum major for the HS band. Hey, once again thanks for the effort and time you have put into helping me out.

Hi two dogs,

First, to your daughter. STUDY, PRACTICE AND GO TO A GOOD MUSIC SCHOOL OR CONSERVATORY. I played Second Bassoon and Contrabassoon under a Principal who was a former Detroit Symphony man, and my stand partner taught bassoon in college before joining. That was the USAF BAND in Washington, DC; the field bands are a good possibility, but I understand many of them are mainly taking college grads now as well; she can talk to the AF Recruiter for details. GOOD LUCK, young lady.

Now, the computer… GOOD WORK! CONGRATULATIONS! It's clean. :D

Since it's now clean, you need to KEEP IT THAT WAY. The first thing I recommend is flushing out your old Restore Points; they are SURE to be infected with all the garp you've gotten rid of, and if you restore from them, you'll be back to Square One. Follow this link: http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgen…src=sec_doc_nam and DISABLE SYSTEM RESTORE, REBOOT and RE-ENABLE SYSTEM RESTORE. A second reboot will force Windows to create a new, CLEAN Restore Point, and all the old ones will have been deleted. Follow that with a DEFRAG (which may take quite a while if you haven't done it lately) and you will have left the mess totally behind you.

Then, I recommend a few things that are really painless; I've outlined them below.

First, KEEP YOUR WINDOWS AND BROWSER UPDATED. As new security problems are found, Microsoft issues UPDATES to plug the holes that have been found. The top entry on your START menu should be "Windows Update," so this one is as easy as falling off a log.

Next, I recommend installing SpywareBlaster. It "inoculates" your computer against literally THOUSANDS of known malware items, and it works in such a way that it DOES NOT need to be running (and consuming system resources) to protect you. The program sets a "Kill-Bit" for each malware item it blocks, and then that thing can't download to your computer or run if it's there. I don't know just how it works, but I can assure you IT DOES! Once the protection is set, all you have to do is check for updates about once a week, install them and run SB to set protection against the new items on the list. Once a Kill-Bit is set, you have PERMANENT protecton from that item unless you remove it. Best of all, this is FREEWARE. Follow this link to download it: http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html

For a good overview of basic Internet security, here is a good article: http://boards.cexx.org/viewtopic.php?t=957 If I can leave you with one final thought, it's this: Security is NOT a destination, it's an endless journey.
Glad we could help :D
