So I think it is a rootkit. My virus scans picked up a few things and removed them, but my problems are still persisting. Some programs open slower than they normally do, I can't see the thumbnails on my videos, and my computer freezes often. The scans aren't picking anything up now, but I still have the problems. I have been fighting with this since Monday 4/13/2009.

Here is my latest HijackThis log:

Thank you for your time and help.
Hi there I can see your problem it is the AWF trojan. So lets kill it shall we

Right-Click Here and Save As to download DelDomains.inf to your desktop.
To use: RIGHT-CLICK DelDomains.inf on your desktop and select: Install (no need to restart)
Note: This will remove all entries in the "Trusted Zone" and "Ranges" also.

THEN

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

[external image: Posted Image]

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[external image: Posted Image]

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.
When I right-click DelDomains.inf, I don't see an install option. I selected open instead, but I don't think it did anything. I would have included the other thing you asked for, but I figured it would be better on my part to follow your instructions word-for-word.
Here is the combofix log. I uninstalled BitDefender, but combofix says it's still there. I disabled everything on McAfee as requested.

Hmm combofix isn't playing for some reason so I will have to use an older programme

You have a downloader trojan called Downloader.Agent.awf or Downloader.Agent.ayy. This trojan replaces legitimate files that are common on most computers with an infected file. It then moves the legitimate file to a "bak" or backup folder. Please follow the directions below to run FindAWF so we can identify the files that have been infected and the backups then restore them.

Download FindAWF.exe from here or here, and save it to your desktop.
  • Double-click on the FindAWF.exe file to run it.
  • It will open a command prompt and ask you to "Press any key to continue".
  • You will be presented with a Menu.

    1. Press 1 then Enter to scan for bak folders
    2. Press 2 then Enter to restore files from bak folders
    3. Press 3 then Enter to remove bak folders
    4. Press 4 then Enter to reset domain zones
    5. Press E then Enter to EXIT

  • Press 1, then press Enter
  • It may take a few minutes to complete so be patient.
  • When it is complete, it will open a text file in notepad called AWF.txt.
  • Please copy and paste the contents of the AWF.txt file in your next reply.

On completion can you let me know of any problems you are still experiencing
Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware 1.36 Database version: 1945 Windows 5.1.2600 Service Pack 2 4/20/2009 6:20:54 PM mbam-log-2009-04-20 (18-20-54).txt Scan type: Quick Scan Objects scanned: 77820 Time elapsed: 3 minute(s), 18 second(s) Memory Processes Infected: 0 Memory Modules Infected: 0 Registry Keys Infected: 0 Registry Values Infected: 0 Registry Data Items Infected: 0 Folders Infected: 0 Files Infected: 0 Memory Processes Infected: (No malicious items detected) Memory Modules Infected: (No malicious items detected) Registry Keys Infected: (No malicious items detected) Registry Values Infected: (No malicious items detected) Registry Data Items Infected: (No malicious items detected) Folders Infected: (No malicious items detected) Files Infected: (No malicious items detected) I still can't see the thumbnails on my videos. Maybe I need to break it up into smaller folders? Do you think I should defragment my computer? Also, McAfee just alerted me of something called a Generic Artemis Trojan. Or something like that. The alert disappeared before I could finish reading it. The "View Recent Events" section doesn't have a log for it, so I don't know if the trojan was blocked or removed. And McAfee virus scan is freezing on me.
OK lets look deeper in case AWF brought a friend along

We will now do a deep search of your processes and files

Download avz4.zip from here
  • Unzip it to your desktop to a folder named avz4
  • Double click on AVZ.exe to run it.
  • Run an update by clicking the Auto Update button on the Right of the Log window: [external image: Posted Image]
  • Click Start to begin the update
Note: If you recieve an error message, chose a different source, then click Start again

  • Start AVZ.
  • Choose from the menu "File" => "Standard scripts " and mark the "Healing/Quarantine and Advanced System Investigation" check box.
  • Click on the “Execute selected scripts”.
  • Automatic scanning, healing and system check will be executed.
  • A logfile (avz_sysinfo.htm) will be created and saved in the LOG folder in the AVZ directory as virusinfo_syscure.zip.
  • It is necessary to reboot your machine, because AVZ might disturb some program operations (like antiviruses and firewall) during the system scan.
  • All applications will work properly after the system restart.

When restarted

  • Start AVZ.
  • Choose from the menu "File" => "Standard scripts " and mark the “Advanced System Investigation" check box.
  • Click on the "Execute selected scripts".
  • A system check will be automatically performed, and the created logfile (avz_sysinfo.htm) will be saved in the LOG folder in the AVZ directory as virusinfo_syscheck.zip.

Attach both zip files to your next post

To attach a file, do the following:
  • Click Add Reply
  • Under the reply panel is the Attachments Panel
  • Browse for the attachment file you want to upload, then click the green Upload button
  • Once it has uploaded, click the Manage Current Attachments drop down box
  • Click on [external image: Posted Image] to insert the attachment into your post

Well that looked OK apart from the three or four Norton services still running ;)

Download and run the Norton removal tool and see if that helps with the McAfee freezing problem

Then download and run Auslogics Disc Defragmenter

Let me know how your system is running on completion

Norton came with the computer, and it would only pop up when McAfee was disabled. I wasn't aware it was running. I removed Norton and used the Disc Defragmenter like you said. McAfee virus scan doesn't seem to freeze anymore, but programs like realplayer open slower and Firefox took some time too. So it's about the same as before, minus the virus scan problem.

I made a new HijackThis log if you're willing to look at it.

On completion run another defrag and let me know if there is an improvement
I did everything and there isn't any improvement. My computer freezes for about 10 seconds when I right click, and it takes a long time for items on my desktop to open. It took over a minute for Firefox and realplayer to open (I used them as a test). I'm very concerned. Maybe there is still some malware here someplace. McAfee keeps alerting me of "Prcviewer" and "Generic. pup" or something similar. I looked them up, and they didn't seem dangerous, but I wanted to ask you just to be safe. Are those bad? I really appreciate your efforts.
