Below is my log file from HijackThis. I believe I have some issues in this file that should be removed, but I do not know which ones. I also think I have way too many processes running on my computer. Sometimes I can not get Firefox to open until I go in to the process and start ending them. I typically stumble across the right one(s) and then Firefox starts up. I would appreciate any suggestions. Thanks.

Hello sadie1,
Welcome to What the Tech.
My name is OCD, I will be helping you with your log today.

Please be advised, as I am still in training, all my replies to you will be checked for accuracy by one of our experts to ensure that I am giving you the best possible advise.
This may cause a delay, but I will do my best to keep it as short as possible.

I am checking over your HijackThis log now, I will post back shortly with instructions.

Hello sadie1,

Thank you for your patience.

Your copy of HijackThis is located in the wrong place.

It is important that you download HijackThis to its own folder as this folder will be used when HijackThis makes backups.
When HJT fixes anything, it makes backups of the original files in the folder it is in.

  • If you run HijackThis from a Temporary folder the backups and HijackThis itself could be accidentally deleted if the Temporary folders are cleaned.
  • Also if you run HijackThis from the desktop then the backup files and folders can clutter up the desktop and be accidentally deleted.
  • Lastly, if you run HijackThis from inside a compressed file then the backups are not created at all.
Having the backups could be VITAL to restoring your system if something went wrong in the FIX process!

- - - - - Next - - - - -

Download HijackThis from Here.
  • Choose the default location of C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis as the destination. HJT needs to be in its own folder so that the program itself isn't deleted by accident. Having the backups could be VITAL to restoring your system if something went wrong in the FIX process!
Once you have downloaded the updated version please remove the old version of HijackThis and desktop shortcut by following these instructions: (remove BEFORE installing the new version)
Please go to Start Menu > Control Panel > Add/ Remove Programs
Scroll Down and locate the following programs:
  • HijackThis 2.0.2
Select the program, then select remove. Close the Control Panel when done.

- - - - - Next - - - - -

Locate the HijackThis icon on your desktop and right click on it and select delete. Please follow the remainder of the instructions to install the new version of HijackThis and run a new scan.
  • Go to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis
  • Click the HJTInstall.exe button.
  • Accept the license agreement .
  • The progam will place a shortcut on your desktop. This will make it easier for you to access the tool when required.
  • Click Do a system scan and save a log file. A Notepad file will open.
  • To post the text, first you must highlight the entire text and then press the (Ctrl+C) keys which copies it to your clipboard.
  • Now paste the log into this thread using the (Ctrl + V) buttons.

On your next post please provide the following:
  • New HijackThis log

The first two times I rebooted my computer, I could not get Firefox to open until I deleted some of the processes running via task manager. I do not know what the processes I deleted do, but they looked odd and I just started deleting until Firefox magically opened. My internet is still running slower than usual.

I appreciate your help. Please let me know if you need anything else from me.

Thanks.

sadie1,

Thank you for the logs, please continue.

Please do not stop any processes via task manager at this time.
Do you have access to the Internet using Internet Explorer as your browser? I am trying to determine if your problem is isolated to Firefox.

If you cannot use Internet Explorer and must resort to using Firefox, before you stop any process via the task manager I need for your to write the names down so I can determine what is causing the problem. Please include the names in your next post.

Please download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links and save it to your desktop.

    • DDS.scr
    • DDS.pif
  • Disable any script blocking protection (How to Disable your Security Programs)
  • Double click DDS icon to run the tool (may take up to 3 minutes to run)
  • When done, DDS.txt will open.
  • After a few moments, attach.txt will open in a second window.
  • Save both reports to your desktop.
- - - - - Next - - - - -

On your next post please provide the following:
  • Post the contents of the DDS.txt report in your next reply
  • Attach the Attach.txt report to your post by scroling down to the Attachments area and then clicking Browse. Browse to where you saved the file, and click Open and the click UPLOAD.
  • Were you able to access the Internet with Internet Explorer?

I can access the internet using Internet Explorer. I can access with Firefox also since those processes were ended. I will restart my computer at different times today and see if I can get it to not open Firefox. While this happens regularly, it does not happen every time. When it does happen, I can still use IE to get on the internet. However, both IE and Firefox are slower than they use to be. Thanks again for your help. I will post again if I can get the Firefox issue to reappear! It is important that prior to running the DDS scan that you disable your security programs (both Anti-Virus and Firewall) to give a me a complete view of what is running at the time of the scan.
If you have any questions please ask before continuing.

Sorry. Hopefully I have my anti-virus and firewall off now. Here is my new log and attachment. sadie1,

Thanks for your patience.

I would like for you to verify that your firewall is configured correctly to allow Firefox to access the Internet.

Please go to http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Config…+Security+Suite
Follow the onscreen instructions to verify that you have your CA Personal Firewall configured correctly.

Your Java is outdated.
Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components.

  • Close any programs you may have running, ESPECIALLY your web browser
  • Click Start > Control Panel.
  • Click Add/Remove Programs.
  • Check Java™ 6 Update 3
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat process for Java™ 6 Update 7.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
- - - - - Next - - - - -
  • Download the latest version of Java , which is Version 6 Update 13, and click Free Java Download
  • Follow the onscreen instructions to install Java
  • Reboot if requested to do so.
- - - - - Next - - - - -

Please run DDS by sUBs again. (it should be located on your desktop)

Reboot, on your next post please provide the following:
  • Post the contents of the DDS.txt report in your next reply
  • Attach the Attach.txt report to your post by scroling down to the Attachments area and then clicking Browse. Browse to where you saved the file, and click Open and the click UPLOAD.

I followed the instructions for configuring CA Personal Firewall. The only issue I ran in to when doing this was there were 10 lines for Firefox in the application menu. The instructions said to find the Firefox application and delete it and then add it and check 'OK'. I had 10 lines to delete and then when I added it back, there were 10 lines again. I check 'OK' as directed and it did it for all 10 lines. As for Java, I removed the old versions and rebooted. I then downloaded the new version. However, I can not get it to install. I click the icon on the desktop and the installer pops up, but nothing ever happens. The status bar stays blank. I have tried many times. I re-downloaded and try again. No matter what, it stalls out and I have to close the application using the task manager. I did not go any further as I assumed I needed Java installed before moving on to the next step. Please advise! Thanks.

sadie1

Lets' skip the Java install for a moment and see if we can find what is causing the problems. It appears that your CA Personal Firewall is giving us some difficulty.
So we are going to disable the CA Personal Firewall and activate the Windows Firewall.

CA Personal Firewall

Please navigate to the system tray on the bottom right hand corner and look for the following [external image: Posted Image] sign.

  • Right click it-> hover (mouse-over) over CA Personal Firewall menu option. A sub-menu will pop up.
  • Please chose "Disable CA Personal Firewall"
  • Unfortunately the system tray icon does not change, so if you want to double-check whether or not you successfully disabled the Firewall, do the above steps again and look for "Enable CA Personal Firewall." If this is the case, then you successfully disabled the CA Personal Firewall Guard.
- - - - - Next - - - - -

Enable Windows Firewall
  • Click Start > Control Panel > Security Center
  • Select Windows Firewall > Select the Onradio button
  • Then click OK, close the Control Panel
  • Reboot

You must use Internet Explorer to run the Eset Online Scanner

I need you to run the following scan: Eset Online Scanner
  • Place a check mark in the box YES, I accept the Terms Of Use
  • Click the Start button.
  • Now click the Install button.
  • Click Start. The scanner engine will initialize and update.
  • Do Not place a check mark in the box beside Remove found threats.
  • Click the Scan button. The scan will now run, please be patient.
  • When the scan finishes click the Details tab.
  • Copy and paste the contents of the C:\ProgramFiles\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt into your next reply.
- - - - - Next - - - - -

Reboot, on your next post please provide the following:
  • Eset log

I ran the online scan, but no log showed up so I do not have anything to post. It said no threats were found. What should I do now? Thanks.

sadie1,

Please check and see if a log was created.
The Eset log can be found here: C:\ProgramFiles\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt
If so please post in your next reply.
