I know this is cliche but please, I need help. My niece accessed a online movie site and downloaded a virus. The pop up window I get is TrojanDownloader: Win32/Renos.GF. I have ran AVG , and Windows Defender. Windows Defender found two, one was the MS 2009 spyware which was removed. The other, mentioned above after numerous scans and supposedly removals have not been removed. I am pasting the Hijackthis Log in hopes that someone can help me to remove this file. I use this laptop for my work at home and can't afford another at this time. I am in dire need of assistance.

I have read a few of the threads here and find this is such a common thing yet no matter what we do, still get hit with these spywares and viruses.

Hi there lets see if we can clear this up

As a Vista user I will require that all the programmes I ask you to run, be run by right clicking the icon and selecting Run as Administrator. Otherwise some programmes may fail to do their job properly

Please re-open HiJackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Key] C:\Users\eric\AppData\Roaming\Key Folder\elecsys.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Cognac] C:\Users\eric\AppData\Local\Temp\8706.exe

Now close all windows other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked. Close HiJackThis.

THEN

Lets see what you else you have

Download Rooter.exe to your desktop
  • Doubleclick it to start the tool.
  • A Notepad file containing the report will open, also found at %systemdrive%(usually C:)\Rooter.txt. Copy and paste it with your OTLI log.

THEN

  • Download OTListIt2 to your desktop.
  • Double click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
  • When the window appears, underneath Output at the top change it to Minimal Output.
  • Check the boxes beside LOP Check and Purity Check.
  • Click the Run Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
  • When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTListIt.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTListIt2.
  • Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of these files, one at a time, and post it with your next reply.
Hi, thanks for responding so quickly, I'm running the Hijack scan again and will follow your directions then will post the results.
Hi I followed the instructions but when I went back to post the results, I was directed to another page to download a version of Hijackthis. What happens now? Do I have to run the scans all over again?
The two links should have taken you to download first rooter and then OTListit. I have just confirmed the links on my system What page did you get sent to ? Did you run both programmes ? If so either post or attach the logs here
I ran both programs no problems with either. It took a little longer but no problems. I came back her to post the results and was redirected to download a newer version of Hijackthis by Admin Blair. Now I can't find my post and it had said at the bottom of the redirect..closed. I have the results saved in my email just in case. I will try to repost again
Could you attach the logs then to see if that works as I am puzzled by the re-direct that should not have happened

To attach a file, do the following:
  • Click Add Reply
  • Under the reply panel is the Attachments Panel
  • Browse for the attachment file you want to upload, then click the green Upload button
  • Once it has uploaded, click the Manage Current Attachments drop down box
  • Click on [external image: Posted Image] to insert the attachment into your post
Sorry I tried that too, and it keeps redirecting me to download Hijackthis again. What are my other options on getting this post to you? Because I'm getting a little frustrated.
Thanks for that I will ask the Admins what causes that problem

Run OTList2.exe
  • Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, paste in the following
    :OTLI
O3 - HKCU\..\Toolbar\WebBrowser: (no name) - {604BC32A-9680-40D1-9AC6-E06B23A1BA4C} - Reg Error: Key error. File not found

    O4 - HKLM..\Run: [] File not found

    :Files

    C:\Users\eric\AppData\Local\Temp\8706.exe

    :Commands
    [purity]
    [emptytemp]
    [Reboot]
  • Then click the Run Fix button at the top
  • Let the program run unhindered, reboot when it is done

Do not bother with the OTListit log for the moment

Thankee Debs

OK that cleared a lot of adware although most were orphan registry entries :)

How is your computer running now any problems at all. If there are I have another programme to run but I will give you an upload link for it this time
It's running great as of yesterday evening when I went through the steps. You have been a great help I'm glad I found this site. I try to learn as much about my computer as I can and knew when I saw the file Temp 8706 I know I was in trouble. I go into the registry every now and then, but leave the work to the pros when call for. When you say orphan registries exactly what is that and how if possible do I avoid them. Keep up the GREAT WORK!! And have a great day.
Orphan registry entries are left over after malware cleaning, as they have no file to interact with they are generaly just a waste of space on the system as they can not do anything without the file ( they were popcap entries, relatively harmless)

Now the best part of the day —– Your log now appears clean

A good workman always cleans up after himself so..Run OTListit and hit the cleanup button. It will remove all the programmes we have used plus itself. MBAM can be uninstalled via control panel add/remove along with ERUNT. But they may be useful tools to keep

We will now confirm that your hidden files are set to that, as some of the tools I use will change that
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View Tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Do not show hidden files and folders.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.

[external image: Posted Image] Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version of Java components and upgrade the application. Beware it is NOT supported for use in 9x or ME and probably will not install in those systems

Upgrading Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE)JRE 6 Update 13.
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Select your Platform and check the box that says: "I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6 License Agreement.".
  • Click on Continue.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation (jre-6u13-windows-i586-p.exe) and save it to your desktop. Do NOT use the Sun Download Manager..
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java version.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on the download to install the newest version.(Vista users, right click on the jre-6u13-windows-i586-p.exe and select "Run as an Administrator.")

XP
Now to get you off to a good start we will clean your restore points so that all the bad stuff is gone for good. Then if you need to restore at some stage you will be clean. There are several ways to reset your restore points, but this is my method:
  • Select Start > All Programs > Accessories > System tools > System Restore.
  • On the dialogue box that appears select Create a Restore Point
  • Click NEXT
  • Enter a name e.g. Clean
  • Click CREATE
You now have a clean restore point, to get rid of the bad ones:
  • Select Start > All Programs > Accessories > System tools > Disk Cleanup.
  • In the Drop down box that appears select your main drive e.g. C
  • Click OK
  • The System will do some calculation and the display a dialogue box with TABS
  • Select the More Options Tab.
  • At the bottom will be a system restore box with a CLEANUP button click this
  • Accept the Warning and select OK again, the program will close and you are done

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programmes:
  • SpywareBlaster to help prevent spyware from installing in the first place.

Good Morning EssexBoy, Hope you're having a great start to your day. Quick question..the SpywareBlaster and SuperAntispyware programs you suggested sounds like a good idea. However, I have the AVG program should I uninstall that program and then install the two you suggested or can I keep the AVG in addition to the other two suggested?
And a good evening from me  AVG is antivirus and Superantispware is Antimalware with Spywareblaster being a passive protector. There is no conflict and they all play nice together So you can keep them all to help protect you, run SAS once a week or so and that should be sufficient
