I am having a lot of problems with my computer. I was using windows Onecare protection and started noticing that searches were being redirected to random websites and IE crashes when i try to go to some pages.

I uninstalled Onecare and ran a trendmicro scan and malware bytes and nothing was found. The IE crashes are becoming fewer and farther between but the search redirects everytime I search no matter which search engine I use.

Here is my hijack this log. Can anyone help?

thanks!

Hi mdt, welcome to the forum.

One or more infections have been identified as a info stealer with backdoor capabilities

I strongly suggest you do the following immediately:
  • From a clean computer, change *all* your online passwords – for email, for banks, financial accounts, PayPal, eBay, online companies, any online forums or groups you belong to.
  • DO NOT change passwords or do any transactions while using the infected computer because the attacker will get the new passwords and transaction information.

To make cleaning this machine easier
  • Please do not uninstall/install any programs unless asked to
It is more difficult when files/programs are appearing in/disappearing from the logs.
  • Please do not run any scans other than those requested
  • Please follow all instructions in the order posted
  • All logs/reports, etc.. must be posted in Notepad. Please ensure that word wrap is unchecked. In notepad click format, uncheck word wrap if it is checked.
  • Do not attach any logs/reports, etc.. unless specifically requested to do so.
  • If you have problems with or do not understand the instructions, Please ask before continuing.
  • Please stay with this thread until given the All Clear. A absence of symptoms does not mean a clean machine.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Under Main choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browser
  • Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

If you use Opera browser
  • Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Note your computer may boot a little slower the first couple of times.

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. Note: If you are having difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, or are unsure as to what programs need to be disabled, please refer to the information available through this link : How to Disable your Security Programs
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

[external image: Posted Image]

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[external image: Posted Image]

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Notes:

1.Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
3. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you – please tell your helper.
4. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

Please post back with
  • combofix log
  • new HJT log taken last

How is the computer?

Thansk
Your suggestions are very much appreciated.

I went thru all the steps from your reply and everything completed normally. After completion I did a few searches and the first few were fine but then I got redirected on a couple…grrrrr…

I am posting the combofix and new hijackthis logs below. Please let me know what I should do next.

Thanks—
Mindi

Hi mdt,

Are you using a router? It may need to be reset.

Download and save to your desktop Malwarebytes Anti-Malware

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.
Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediatly.

Next, click Start > Run > type: cmd
[*]Press OK or Hit Enter.

[*]At the command prompt, type or copy/paste: ipconfig /flushdns (note the space between “..g /f…” it needs to be there)

[*]Hit Enter.

[*]You will get a confirmation that the flush was successful.

[*]Close the command box.

Please post back with
  • MBAM log
  • new HJT log
  • answer to wheather or not you are using a router

Thanks
Thanks!
Things seem to be getting better! When my system restarted I actually got a message from Windows Security that no anti-virus protection was found. Have not seen that in a while. Don't think I will be using Windows Onecare Protection anymore since it was active when all this happened.

here are the two logs:

Hi mdt,

Thanks, we'll keep the router info in mind. We may have found the redirecter.

Please download DaonolFix from the link below and save it to your Desktop
Download Mirror #1

-Double-click DaonolFix.exe to run it.
-Select 1. Find Daonol (no fix) by typing 1 and pressing Enter.
-You will see a lot of files being listed - don't worry, they are just being scanned.
-A log will open, please post the contents of that log in your next reply (it can also be found on your desktop, called DaonolFix.txt).

I take it the Symantec (Norton) entries in the log are remnants of a product you no longer use? If that is the case

You can get a free antivirus program from any of these 3 vendors. Download only one and save it to your desktop. Do not install it yet.

Avast
Help and support can be found here Avast Forum
AVG
Help and support can be found here AVG Forum
Antivir PersonalEditionClassic
Help and support can be found hereAvira Personal Support Forum

Next, Click to download the Norton Removal Tool from HERE and save it to your desktop. You will use it later.

Go to add/remove programs and uninstall anything with Norton or Symantec in the name.

Reboot

Next double click Norton_Removal_Tool.exe to run the tool.

  • Follow the on-screen instructions.
  • Your computer may be restarted more than once, and you may be asked to repeat some steps after the computer restarts.
When the tool has finished, reboot and installl your new antivirus program.

Please post back with
  • Daonolfix log
  • new HJT log

Thanks
Thanks!
I think we are on the right track now.

Here are the logs below. Avast is now installed and active.

I have been trying to uninstall that Norton for a couple of years. It was the remnants of corporate edition that was on this computer before I reinstalled windows a few years ago. I could never get it out of the registry but it is gone now…yeah!

Hi Mdt,

Kaspersky can be like that some times, use this one instead.

Go here to run an online scannner from ESET:
http://www.eset.eu/online-scanner

(Note: You must use Internet Explorer for this scan.)

  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
  • Click Start
  • When asked, allow the activex control to install
  • Disable your Antivirus software. You can usually do this with its Notfication Tray icon near the clock
  • Click Start
  • Make sure that the option "Remove found threats" is Unchecked, and the option "Scan unwanted applications" is Checked.
  • Click Scan.
  • Wait for the scan to finish.
  • Re-enable your Antivirus software.
  • A logfile is created and located at C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt. We will need this later.
Please post back with the ESET log and a new HJT log.

Thanks
Hi, Computer seems to be running fine bit I tried to run the ESET scanner and it get blocked by Windows because it says the publisher can not be identified. I went back and tried to run the Kaspersky again and it wont run either.. Do you think I am ok or should I run another hijack this or other program? Thanks– Mindi
I ran the eset and it found and cleaned 50! infected files. I am attaching log below. Should I delete the quarantined files?

Also a new hijackthis! file
