about 2 weeks ago, my PC started slowing down and stalls for 10-20 seconds(on and offline). Can hear the harddrive (or fan?) turning on. As such it has trouble multitasking. Online (using Firefox browser) sometimes the window names aren't visible on the bottom toolbar or disappear when I minimize them; sometimes my cursor can't access the bottom toolbar.
Am running Spywareguard, Spybot and Spywareblaster.
I installed and ran (and uninstalled afterwards) some other freeware programs - AVG, Avirar, Bit Defender remover tool. I think AVG found a rootkit (AVG put it in it's "vault"). I just tried Windows XP "system restore" to two different dates in March, but as it finished, it reported it couldn't actually restore.

Hi dave e,

:welcome:

My name is Tomk. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can take a while to research, so please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:

  • I will be working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for the issues on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two.

Then

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.
  • Note: If you receive a notice that some of the items couldn't be removed, that they have been added to the delete on reboot list, please reboot (shut down your computer then restart it).
Also "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Hi Tomk,
thanks for your help! I followed your instructions and will post the mbam log, and hijackthis log (after rebooting) below. Apparently there were a bunch of trojans, and items to be deleted after rebooting. The PC is working better - no stalling when I click on a folder. Online also better but I had two windows open, and one just disappeared. I'm using Firefox 3.0.6.
Dave

dave e,

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link –> http://forums.whatthetech.com/How_Disable_…ams_t96260.html

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[external image: Posted Image]

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Notes:

1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.
3. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
4. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you – please tell your helper.
5. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.
Closed down anti-spyware and Windows firewall, downloaded and ran Combofix. An announcement window flashed too quick for me to read, and then the blue window "C:\" (I guess a line command window) with a blinking cursor opened and is sitting on the desktop. Nothing seems to be happening.
Blue window was there a couple minutes, then I closed it. Using same computer; online it's slow/stalling (and fan turned on) again.
dave e, Please try to run ComboFix again. But this time, you need to leave the machine alone. Don't use it. Let ComboFix do it's thing. Unless it hangs for a full 10 minutes, don't touch anything.
dave e,

Well then, I need you to try to get me a couple more things:

Download Rooter.exe to your desktop

  • Then doubleclick it to start the tool
  • A Notepad file containing the report will open, also found at %systemdrive%\Rooter.txt. Post that here

Please download DDS and save it to your desktop.
  • Disable any script blocking protection
  • Double click dds.scr to run the tool.
  • When done, DDS.txt will open.
  • Click Yes at the next prompt for Optional Scan.
  • Save both reports to your desktop.
—————————————————
  • Post the contents of the DDS.txt report in your next reply
  • Attach the Attach.txt report to your post by scroling down to the Attachments area and then clicking Browse. Browse to where you saved the file, and click Open and the click UPLOAD.
Posting ROOTER and DDS reports here, attached Attach file. Btw, I followed your previous posted instructions offline, so Firefox wasn't an issue then either. Ran Gooredfix again - was not prompted to reboot. Log below. Ran Oldmoveit3 and got an immediate Application error - something about bad image for windows. The program kept running, and I will post the log below. I was prompted to reboot. I declined so that I could save log. Then I closed down manually, then started PC again. It seemed to reboot, but no desktop icons were visible. Instead, I was prompted if I wanted to run Oldmoveit3. I declined, and desktop icons appeared. If you think there's no malware present, should I just save my files and ware off the pc (I have a standalone harddrive), and restart Windows XP? This Dell PC has Windows XP stored on the HD but separated from anything I do.
