I had Windows Live OneCare protecting my system but noticed redirects from searches. Infrequently at first and then more often. Found that I cannot run windows updates and cannot access to microsoft online chat to get online help. Firefox no longer will run. Crashes on start up. Windows Live OneCare detected no issues. Removed OneCare and tried to install alternate antivirus and it would not install. Ran Panda online scan and it found but could not remove all objects. Installed BitDefender and it also found objects originally that it could not remove. Now shows clean but still redirected and cannot run updates. Cannot open DOS from Start >Run> CMD. Parsed HJT log and it indicated mutliple hot items in log. No changes nade. I have an external drive Maxtor but cannot access to it any longer from this computer. Moved Maxtor to another PC on home netowrk and can view all files/photos on backup from there.

Hello & Welcome to What the Tech
Apologies for the delay, as you can appreciate the board is very busy.
Please Subscribe to this Thread to get immediate notification of replies as soon as they are posted. To do this click Options, then click Track this topic. Make sure it is set to Immediate Email Notification, then click Proceed.

In the meantime please note the following:
  • Any recommendations made are for your computer problems only and should NOT be used on any other computer.
  • Please DO NOT run any scans/tools or other fixes unless I ask you to. This is very important for several reasons. Here are just two of them:
    1. The tools that we use are very powerful and can cause >>irreparable damage<< to your computer if not used correctly.
    2. Commercial scanners, for the most part can not completely remove some of the more "resistant" infections. This makes it much more difficult to get rid of completely.
  • If you get stuck or are unsure of something please ask for a further explanation, do not guess.
  • It will require more than one round to properly clean your system. Continue to respond to this thread until I give you the All Clean! even if symptoms seemingly abate.
Please note that the forum is very busy and if I don't hear from you within five days this thread will be closed.
If for any reason you cannot complete instructions within that time, that's fine, just put a post here so that I know you're still here. We get a lot of people who simply leave & if there is no contact for that amount of time I will have to assume you have abandoned your topic.

Thanks

DDS
Download DDS.scr by sUBs from one of the following links & save it to your desktop.
http://www.techsupportforum.com/sectools/sUBs/dds
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/dds.scr
http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/dds

  • Double-Click on dds.scr and a command window will appear. This is normal
  • Shortly after two logs will appear, DDS.txt & Attach.txt
  • A window will open instructing you save & post the logs
  • Save the logs to a convenient place such as your desktop
  • Copy the contents of both logs & post in your next reply
RootRepeal

      Stealth Objects
      Hidden Services
  • Click the OK button
  • In the next dialog, select all drives showing
  • Click OK to start the scan
Note: The scan can take some time. DO NOT run any other programs while the scan is running
  • When the scan is complete, the Save Report button will become available
  • Click this and save the report to your Desktop as RootRepeal.txt
  • Go to File then Exit to close the program
To post in next reply:
Contents of DDS log
Contents of Attach.txt
Contents of RootRepeal log
Problems with DDS portion:

First link http://www.techsupportforum.com/sectools/sUBs/dds goes to a HTTP 404 not found
2nd link http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/dds.scr goes to an entirely blank page and says Done in bottom left of IE
3rd link http://www.forospyware.com/sUBs/dds shows and entirely blank page and pops up a window File Download -Security Warning Do you want to run of save this file? Name: dds.pif Type: Shortcut to MS_DOS program, 351KB From: www.forospyware.com

I can see the download status window behind this and has a blank download status bar. When I click Run, I get the 2nd Internet Explorer Security Warning for the unknown publisher and I click Run again. The download status window disappears and a black, maybe DOS, window appears for a fraction of a second and disappears. Nothing else comes up. I tried going to bleepingcomputer.com manually typing or starting at the base site thinkng I would guide myself to the download. www.bleepingcomputer.com will not display on this computer.

Here is what I got from RoorRepeal:

Hi

When I click Run, I get the 2nd Internet Explorer Security Warning for the unknown publisher and I click Run again.

You need to Save DDS first. So instead of clicking Run click Save & save it to your desktop, then try running it.
Let me know how you go.
I now have it saved on the desktop. When I select to Run it from the desktop, a window pops up for a split second and then disappears and nothing else happens. I've rebooted and tried running it again from the desktop and had the same result. No indication that anything else occurs.
Hi

Never heard of this happening with DDS… strange.

Ok, try this scanner:
Random's System Information Tool (RSIT)
  • Download Random's System Information Tool (RSIT) by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run the tool
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open, log.txt (<info.txt (<
  • Copy & paste the contents of both logs in your next reply
If info.txt does not minimise to the Task Bar, you will find it in C:\rsit
info.txt logfile of random's system information tool 1.06 2009-04-13 21:01:41

GooredFix
Download GooredFix from one of the locations below & save it to your Desktop

Download Mirror #2
  • Double-click GooredFix.exe to run it
  • Select 1. Find Goored (no fix) by typing 1 & pressing Enter
  • A log will open, post the contents of that log in your next reply (it can also be found on your desktop, called GooredLog.txt)
Note: Do not run Option #2 yet

Combofix
Download ComboFix from one of these locations:
Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

**IMPORTANT !!! Rename ComboFix.exe to Commy.exe BEFORE saving it to your Desktop**

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
A guide to do this can be found here
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:
[external image: Posted Image]

  • Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the contents of C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply
A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may cause to your machine by running ComboFix on your own. This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.
ComboFix SHOULD NOT be used unless requested by a forum helper

The performance is better. I have now run Windows Updates and it worked. I can reach DOS and was able to browse to antivirus repair sites I couldn't reach earlier such as the bleepingcomputer link you provided. I have not seen a redirect yet in very limited use of Google. Is there something in these logs that stands out to tell us what was causing the problem? One thing I have noticed on reboot is that there is a message that pops up "The instruction at 0x0012e619" could not be written to 0x00000000. The part in quotes is exact but the rest is a guess as it disappeared as the computer shut down.
Hi

One thing I have noticed on reboot is that there is a message that pops up "The instruction at 0x0012e619" could not be written to 0x00000000. The part in quotes is exact but the rest is a guess as it disappeared as the computer shut down.

We'll make sure the machine is clean before looking at this. Though a quick Google search was pointing toward possibly hardware issues ie RAM.

Is there something in these logs that stands out to tell us what was causing the problem?

Your computer was not that badly infected but this: c:\windows\wyvqo.klq was definitely a baddy.
