I have contracted some sort of virus. Computer acting wierd, very slow, kept getting a pop up for "virus remover 2009". Also when trying to access websites off of google search page it says something about script running in background that is slowing down the machine, but whether you select yes or no , nothing happens until you control-alt-delete and kill it.

Please Help!

Computer still acting a little slow and weird. I will wait for your reply.

Rockyroo
Hi Rockyroo,

We'll dig deeper. Any redirects or popups?

Next, Download Rooter.exe to your desktop
  • Then doubleclick it to start the tool
  • A Notepad file containing the report will open, also found at %systemdrive%\Rooter.txt (Where %systemdrive% is usually C: or the drive that you have installed Windows). Post that in your next reply.

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. Note: If you are having difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, or are unsure as to what programs need to be disabled, please refer to the information available through this link : How to Disable your Security Programs
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[external image: Posted Image]

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Notes:

1.Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
3. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you – please tell your helper.
4. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

Please post back with the Rooter log, combofix log and a new HJT log.

Thanks
Completed the task. Here are the results.

How does it look?? Seems to be running a bit smoother.

Anything else?

Rockyroo
Hi Rockyroo,

I see you where here before. Did you renew your McAfee subscription?

Download the HostsXpert 4.3 - Hosts File Manager.
  • Unzip HostsXpert 4.3 - Hosts File Manager to a convenient folder such as C:\HostsXpert 4.3 - Hosts File Manager
  • Run HostsXpert 4.3 - Hosts File Manager from the folder you extracted it to
  • Click on "File Handling".
  • Click on "Restore MS Hosts File".
  • Click OK on the Confirmation box.
  • Click on "Make Read Only?"
  • Click the X to exit the program.
  • Note: If you were using a custom Hosts file you will need to replace any of those entries yourself.

Open hijackthis, do a system scan only and checkmark these lines, if present

O23 - Service: Bonjour Service - Unknown owner - C:\Program Files\Bonjour\mDNSResponder.exe (file missing)

Close ALL other windows/browsers and click Fix Checked. Answer Yes if prompted. Close HJT.

You will need to use Internet Explorer for this scan.
*Note
It is recommended to disable onboard antivirus program and antispyware programs while performing scans so there are no conflicts and it will speed up scan time.
Please don't go surfing while your resident protection is disabled!
Once the scan is finished remember to re-enable your antivirus along with your antispyware programs.

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.
  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions.
  • You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button
    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
    • Archives
    • Mail databases
  • Click on My Computerr under Scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As….
  • Save this report to a convenient place. Desktop is a good place.
  • Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  • Please post this log in your next reply along with a new HijackThis log.

Thanks
I ran the hostexpert

Made the deletion in HJT

And then went to Kaspersky. At the start after it scanned my computer said that I needed Java 1.5. So I clicked a red highlighted text area that took me to Java where I downloaded what I thought was Java 1.5. What ever it was include some stupid MSN tool bar! How doI get rid of it?? When I went back to Kaspersky itsaid the same thing after the scan… I needed Java 1.5. Because of that, in the licensing agreement, the accept button was grayed out and I couldn't click on it.

Anyway her is my HJT scan

Hi Rockyroo,

I don't know what Kaspersky's problem is, as far as I can tell your java is up to date.

Usually it's Googletool bar they want to add.

Try this first.

Click the start button, click run and copy and paste this line into the run box and click Ok

msiexec /x {9C9CEB9D-53FD-49A7-85D2-FE674F72F24E}

Post an uninstall list and we'll see what java you have for sure.

Please make an uninstall list
  • Start HijackThis
  • Click the Config button
  • Click the Misc Tools button
  • Click the Open Uninstall Manager button.
  • Click the Save list button and save it to your desktop.
When you press Save, a notepad will open with the contents. Copy/paste the contents of the notepad file in your next reply.

Hi Rockyroo,

Did that toolbar go away? MSN toolbar still shows in the uninstall list.

I'm not sure why you had problems with Kaspersky. Your jave is up to date. There is one version you should uninstall though.

Go to add/remove programs and uninstall

Java™ 6 Update 6
MSN Toolbar
MSN Toolbar

We'll use this scanner instead.

Go here to run an online scannner from ESET:
http://www.eset.eu/online-scanner

(Note: You must use Internet Explorer for this scan.)

  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
  • Click Start
  • When asked, allow the activex control to install
  • Disable your Antivirus software. You can usually do this with its Notfication Tray icon near the clock
  • Click Start
  • Make sure that the option "Remove found threats" is Unchecked, and the option "Scan unwanted applications" is Checked.
  • Click Scan.
  • Wait for the scan to finish.
  • Re-enable your Antivirus software.
  • A logfile is created and located at C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt. We will need this later.
Please post back with the ESET log and a new HJT log.
I was able to get rid of the MSN toolbar and also removed the Java 6. I am a little confused by your reply. Looks like you pasted someone elses reply into this post. I am assuming it is because you wanted me to run the ESET scanner, is that correct??
Hi Rockyroo,

Sorry, I'm not sure where that came from, but you are right, I'd like you to run the ESET online scan.
