Hi,

Whenever I use internet explorer it opens pages like its on dial-up (i,m on a 20Mb cable connection). But if I try to open the same page with Google chrome it opens up in a flash. I much prefer Chrome over IE so its no major problem, but some sites i use only work with IE. I have run avast antivirus, ad-aware, spy-bot, and n-cleaner regularly and my laptop seems to be ok until I open IE that is.

EDIT:
After a restart I can open IE and it will open the 1st website at an ok speed (slower than in my other browsers, but still acceptable) but by the time i've opened up 2 or 3 links it crawls to a dial-up speed, and if I do persevere it eventually gets to a point where the green bar never fills up (i get no "page cannot be found" message or anything like that, just a blank page). I left it overnight on MS Office Update but even after 9+ hours the bar had not moved past 10% or so.

Anyway heres my log:

Thanks for any assistance with this issue.
Hi TheStig,

:welcome:

My name is Tomk. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can take a while to research, so please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:

  • I will be working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for the issues on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

I see you've been going to PartyPoker. That often loads you system with adware. Let's do some looking.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two.

Then

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.
  • Note: If you receive a notice that some of the items couldn't be removed, that they have been added to the delete on reboot list, please reboot (shut down your computer then restart it).
Also "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Hi Tomk,

Overall my laptop is running pretty well. I had neglected my laptops defenses for sometime and it was only when my missus got a new laptop that I realised just how slow mine was running. Since then Ive installed adaware, spybot s&d and have scanned and removed infections on an almost daily basis. I've removed a few viruses with avast, and have used ncleaner to clean my regidsty, temp files etc, I have unistalled several programs i no longer use with revounistaller and then defragged with defraggler.

Overall im pleased with the improvement ive gained so far but I.E. still has something wrong with it. After I've opened a few pages with it, it just hangs. I rarely use I.E. though so this is not a major problem for me but i'd still like to try and remove whatever is causing it.

So,

Thanks for your help, and here is the information that you asked for:

You need to create a new Clean restore point:

  • Download SysRestorePoint to your desktop and unzip it to it's own folder.
  • Double click SysRestorePoint.exe so that we can make a new system restore point.
  • A box will pop up after it has made a new point, usually after a few seconds. Close that window and exit the program.
Remove all previous Restore Points
Click Start Menu > Run > copy and paste

cleanmgr

At top, click on More Options tab. Click Clean up… button in the System Restore box. Click on Yes button. When finished, click on Cancel button to exit.

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Check "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, Uncheck "Show hidden files and folders."
Check "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

The following is my standard advice for the future. Use what you can and pat yourself on the back for what you're already doing.

Please take time to read Preventing Malware - Tools and Practices for Safe Computing. Very important information for your consideration is contained therein.

I would also suggest you read this:

Please respond back that you understand the above and let me know if you have any questions. Otherwise, this thread will be closed Resolved.
Tomk, :notworthy: Thank you so much for your help, my laptop has never run so well before. I may well be back in touch for help cleansing my parents computers. Yours extremely gratefully TheStig P.S. Could you advise me as to what these steps are for: Double-click My Computer. Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options. Click the View tab. Check "Hide file extensions for known file types." Under the "Hidden files" folder, Uncheck "Show hidden files and folders." Check "Hide protected operating system files." Click Apply, and then click OK. I followed the steps as you advised but just wondered why.
TheStig, That restores things to the default settings. There are many files that are "hidden" on your computer. The reasoning for this is that they are to important to be accidentally deleted or changed, or even moved. If they can't be seen, someone can't accidentally click on them. Any further questions?
