Hello When I click start I see a default folder called My Music. When I click on My Documents I see the Identical folder there also. Shouldn't there be just one folder in My Docs; if so, how do I remove the other folder that appears when I click start? Thank you

Both of those are the same folder. The "My Music" in your Start Menu is simply a shortcut to the same one in My Documents. To get rid of the My Music shortcut in your Start Menu do this:

To remove a Windows Icon from your Start Menu
  • Right click the Start Bar and click Properties
  • Click the Start Menu Tab
If the Start Menu circle is filled
  • Click the button called Customize next to it
  • Click the Advanced Tab
  • Scroll down the box in the middle of the window until you reach My Music (it will have an icon to the left of it too)
  • Click the circle under My Music called Don't Display Item
  • Click OK and your done
If the Classic Start Menu circle is filled
  • Click the button Cancel
  • Click Start to open your Start Menu and click Run
*If you don't have Run, go to Programs > Accessories and click Command Prompt
  • Type in gpedit.msc and press enter
*If you were using Command Prompt then do the same thing, you can exit it once the Group Policy window pops-up
  • The Group Policy window should pop-up, look at the left side and click the + by User Configuration so that it expands (if it is already expanded don't click anything)
  • Then expand Administrative Templates and then Start Menu and Taskbar
  • In the list on the right find the item "Remove My Music from Start Menu", right click it and choose Properties
  • Click the Disabled circle and then click OK
  • This change will take effect once you restart your computer

Great information . I have a folder in my docs that is a Windows default folder called My Music. I have a folder I made called My Pics which I created because there was no Windows default one. I don't know why there is one for Music but not for Pics but if it does not matter I'm all set. Thank you

It is curious that you didn't have a My Pictures folder. Did it disappear or did you never have a My Pictures folder to begin with? I wouldn't say it's a problem though as long as you know how to create a new one (which you said you have ) .

Hello I used to have one and would not have deleted it. As long as the folder I created will serve the purpose, it is functional and acceptable to me. Thanx again for your help.

Hi Z I am trying but it does not appear in My Docs. I think my error may be not understanding what it means when it says 'In owner your name', change your name to the name of your account. I am entering the email address at Comcast as my account as I can't think of any other account except that I use Hotmail for your forum. I did notice on the notepad a yellow 'gear' but I don't know what that means. I clicked save but nothing appeared in my docs. It did ask me if I wanted to replace the My Documents to which I responed yes. Perhaps I have to reboot? Thank you for the note.

Hi Grampy Pete

Try the fix given by Ramesh (Reputable MVP)

I quote:

Click Start, Run and type:

rundll32 mydocs.dll,PerUserInit

Press {ENTER}

This creates a new My Pictures folder with the special icon.

Be aware, as mentioned later in that thread, that rundll32 mydocs.dll,PerUserInit
are case-sensitive. (Copy / Paste will do here)

Regards

It meant the User Name of the account you are logged into on your computer.

Hello all
Regarding the default Windows missing My Pictures folder; I tried the notepad and it imported a notepad with a yellow gear. When I opened it, there was the copy and paste info but no new folder.
Abydos,I did run rundll32 etc and I DO have the new My Pictures folder I was looking for - thanx.
Thank you all for your help!
P.S. Ztrucker, I know if you were at my keyboard it woud have worked - thanx.
