I ran Malwarebytes, and according to the result, there is a Worm.Archive in C:\\WINDOWS\Fonts\register.exe. Do I just choose the malware and click on "Remove Selected"? Is there anything else I need to do?

Perhaps completely irrelevant but an annoying thing all the same, is that every so often, I get an error message telling me that avgcsrvx.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. I've uninstalled, then re-installed the latest version of AVGfree yet it still happens.

Here is the logfile. Thank you so much in advance!

Hi HobbitsMum,,

:welcome:

My name is Tomk. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can take a while to research, so please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:

  • I will be working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for the issues on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

You are correct in how malwarebytes works. Update it before using it again. Or you could just start again with the following directions.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two.

Then

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.
  • Note: If you receive a notice that some of the items couldn't be removed, that they have been added to the delete on reboot list, please reboot (shut down your computer then restart it).
Also "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Thanks, Tomk! I was beginning to think I've been overlooked! Below is the new HijackThis log: Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware 1.36 Database version: 1974 Windows 5.1.2600 Service Pack 3 13/04/2009 8:40:15 PM mbam-log-2009-04-13 (20-40-15).txt Scan type: Quick Scan Objects scanned: 85011 Time elapsed: 7 minute(s), 22 second(s) Memory Processes Infected: 0 Memory Modules Infected: 0 Registry Keys Infected: 0 Registry Values Infected: 0 Registry Data Items Infected: 0 Folders Infected: 0 Files Infected: 1 Memory Processes Infected: (No malicious items detected) Memory Modules Infected: (No malicious items detected) Registry Keys Infected: (No malicious items detected) Registry Values Infected: (No malicious items detected) Registry Data Items Infected: (No malicious items detected) Folders Infected: (No malicious items detected) Files Infected: C:\WINDOWS\Fonts\register.exe (Worm.Archive) -> Quarantined and deleted successfully.
HobbitsMum, That was the Malwarebytes' log and it looks like you had the program remove the bad file. Good job. :) Now please post me a new HijackThis log and let me know of any symptoms you are noticing.
Oh, I'm so sorry about that! PC seems to 'respond' a lot quicker, thank you. Just for future reference, when I run Malwarebytes and find a virus, do I just delete it and it should be okay, or does it depend on where the virus has attached itself?

HobbitsMum,

Just for future reference, when I run Malwarebytes and find a virus, do I just delete it and it should be okay, or does it depend on where the virus has attached itself?

Though it is possible to get a false positive, they are rare. Usually you are safe to just click Remove Selected and get on with life.

  • Please open HijackThis and run Do a system scan only
  • Check the boxes next to ONLY the entries listed below(if present):

I'm having trouble downloading from the Kaspersky website. I've turned off Avast before downloading. It starts the download/update, and then I get this error message: Update has failed. Program has failed to start. Close the Kaspersky Online Scanner 7.0 window and open it again to install the program. You must be online to update the Kaspersky Online Scanner 7.0 database. With the latest database updates, you can find new viruses and other threats. Please go online to use Kaspersky Online Scanner 7.0. [ERROR: Invalid file signature]
HobbitsMum,

Several people seem to be having trouble with Kaspersky today. Let's run a different one.

I need you to run the following scan: Eset Online Scanner

  • Place a check mark in the box YES, I accept the Terms Of Use
  • Click the Start button.
  • Now click the Install button.
  • Click Start. The scanner engine will initialize and update.
  • Do Not place a check mark in the box beside Remove found threats.
  • Click the Scan button. The scan will now run, please be patient.
  • When the scan finishes click the Details tab.
  • Copy and paste the contents of the C:\ProgramFiles\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt into your next reply.

How come Avast (and AVG prior to that) didn't pick these up? Can you recommend a 'better' one?

Some of the files listed are not actually bad.

You've got a couple of infected emails in your outlook express in a ebay folder. You also have at least one in your sent folder. It's possible this means that you forwarded the contaminated email to someone. Please look through your email (including sent folder) and delete all emails that you don't want/need. Odds are that the infected emails will have attachments or at least links in them. Don't open any attachments or click on any links. Just delete them. When you're done, empty your deleted items folder.

The other infected files are possibly illegal downloads and some pirated software. In order to get them on your machine, you had to chose to allow them on. This bypassed your security programs.

I need one more scan.

Download Rooter.exe to your desktop

  • Then doubleclick it to start the tool
  • A Notepad file containing the report will open, also found at %systemdrive%\Rooter.txt. Post that here
I've removed and cleared those files. When I get a copy of something (be it downloaded or from someone else), I scan it first before opening it. Surely, at this stage any 'undesirable' attachments would have been detected, right? Apart from using Avast, how often should I run Kaspersky? Also, is it possible that Kaspersky detects something that Avast alone would not? How then would I proceed to fix something, stopping short of deleting the items? Is removal the only fix? I'm sorry about all these questions… Here is the results of the Rooter.exe scan. Thank you! HobbitsMum,

Surely, at this stage any 'undesirable' attachments would have been detected, right?

Hopefully, but the garbage is good at hiding.

Apart from using Avast, how often should I run Kaspersky?

You can run it whenever your curious. However, you really shouldn't have to run it as a general rule. If you're going to continue to use P2P programs, I'd suggest that you run it fairly often. Be careful though because not everything it finds is actually bad. It finds things that are "risky" like IRC programs and VNC programs.

Also, is it possible that Kaspersky detects something that Avast alone would not?

Yes. No program finds everything every time. Kaspersky online is more up to date with it's definitions than Avast will be. There is a longer "lag" period to get the information to your program.

How then would I proceed to fix something, stopping short of deleting the items?

Usually you can't. Once contaminated, it just needs to go.

Please download the OTMoveIt3 by OldTimer.
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Please double-click OTMoveIt3.exe to run it. (Note: If you are running on Vista, right-click on the file and choose Run As Administrator).
  • Copy the lines in the codebox below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):

  • Return to OTMoveIt3, right click in the "Paste Instructions for Items to be Moved" window (under the yellow bar) and choose Paste.
  • Click the red Moveit! button.
  • Copy everything in the Results window (under the green bar) to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy), and paste it in your next reply.
  • Close OTMoveIt3
Note: If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes. In this case, after the reboot, open Notepad (Start->All Programs->Accessories->Notepad), click File->Open, in the File Name box enter *.log and press the Enter key, navigate to the C:\_OTMoveIt\MovedFiles folder, and open the newest .log file present, and copy/paste the contents of that document back here in your next post.

Then please let me have another HijackThis log and describe how your computer is behaving now.
