Hi,

I still have the following item in the log:
02-BHO: (no name) - {1E8A6170-7264-4DOF-BEAE-D42A53123C75} - C:\Program Files\Symantec Shared\coShared\Browser\1.7\NppBho.dll
Should that be there?

Yes - It belongs to your Norton Antivirus program

please do the following:

Follow these steps to uninstall Combofix
  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK.
  • Note the space between the ..X and the /U, it needs to be there.
[external image: Posted Image]

NEXT

Clean up with OTMoveIt3:
  • Double-click OTMoveIt3.exe to start the program.
  • Close all other programs apart from OTMoveIt3 as this step will require a reboot
  • On the OTMoveIt3 main screen, press the [external image: Posted Image] button
  • Say Yes to the prompt and then allow the program to reboot your computer.

Please post a Fresh HJT log and advise how your computer is running now.
Done.

The computer seems to be running fine. It's still a little slow on start-up. It takes about five minutes from boot until I can load an application. But this was a problem I've been experiencing for awhile and can live with. Here's the new log:

Hi,

You have WildTangent on your system, this is classified as an PUP(potentially unwanted program) as there is some thought that it does monitor browsing behaviour, if you use this program for your games, leave it be, but if you don't use it, you should consider removing it through Add/Remove programs.

Other than that, your log is clean

Your system is taking so long to boot up because you are running a Symantec/Norton product along with Avast…you should remove one of them…..
(Symantec is thought to be a resource hog)

Below I have included a number of recommendations for how to protect your computer against malware infections.
  • Keep Windows updated by regularly checking their website at :
    http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/
This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer.
  • SpywareBlaster protects against bad ActiveX, it immunizes your PC against them.
  • SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts. Make sure you are only running one real-time anti-spyware protection program ( eg : TeaTimer, Windows Defender ) or there will be a conflict.
  • Make Internet Explorer more secure
    • Click Start > Run
    • Type Inetcpl.cpl & click OK
    • Click on the Security tab
    • Click Reset all zones to default level
    • Make sure the Internet Zone is selected & Click Custom level
    • In the ActiveX section, set the first two options ("Download signed and unsigned ActiveX controls) to "Prompt", and ("Initialize and Script ActiveX controls not marked as safe") to "Disable".
    • Next Click OK, then Apply button and then OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  • ATF Cleaner - Cleans temporary files from IE and Windows, empties the recycle bin and more. Great tool to help speed up your computer and knock out those nasties that like to reside in the temp folders.
  • MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well known ad sites and other bad sites. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer, meaning it will be difficult to infect yourself in the future.
  • For Firefox, I highly recommend these add-ons to keep your PC even more secure.
    • NoScript - for blocking ads and other potential website attacks
    • McAfee SiteAdvisor - this tells you whether the sites you are about to visit are safe or not. A must if you do a lot of Googling
  • Keep a backup of your important files - Now, more than ever, it's especially important to protect your digital files and memories. This article is full of good information on alternatives for home backup solutions.
  • ERUNT (Emergency Recovery Utility NT) allows you to keep a complete backup of your registry and restore it when needed. The standard registry backup options that come with Windows back up most of the registry but not all of it. ERUNT however creates a complete backup set, including the Security hive and user related sections. ERUNT is easy to use and since it creates a full backup, there are no options or choices other than to select the location of the backup files. The backup set includes a small executable that will launch the registry restore if needed.
  • Recovery Console - Recent trends appear to indicate that future infections will include attacks to the boot sector of the computer. The installation of the Recovery Console in the computer will be our only defense against this threat. For more information and steps to install the Recovery Console see This Article. Should you need assistance in installing the Recovery Console, please do not hesitate to ask.
  • Please read the guide by Rorschach112on how to prevent malware and about safe computing here
Thank you for your patience, and performing all of the procedures requested.
Hi CatByte,

I can't thank you enough for all your help, support, and advice. It's so hard for an average Joe like myself to keep up with all this stuff. I've read the guide by Rorschach112 and I think I have a handel on what I need to do. If you don't mind, I'd like to run my action plan by you one last time and then I'll leave you alone.

First, I'm going to remove Norton Internet Security. I was under the understanding that this program would do it all. I'm rather disappointed.

Security Programs
AV - AVAST. Already installed.
Active X - Spyware Blaster. Already installed.
Firewall - Windows Firewall. Only because I already have it installed and I'm reluctant to install more than I need to at this time.
Spyware Guard - Windows Defender. Already installed.
Anti-Spyware Program. MalwareBytes Anti-Malware. Already installed. Will this conflict with Windows Defender?
Anti Phishing? I currently have this with Norton Internet Security. Will one of the above handle this once I remove Norton?

Extras
I'll likely follow your advice by installing the programs suggested.

Internet Browsers
I prefer Firefox but also use IE to network to the office. I'll follow your tips for better security.

install sp3. I didn't even know this was available until I saw it your bio.

Does this sound about right for starters?

Once again, thank you and best regards.
Hi,

That sounds like a good plan, although I also recommend using a third party firewall to protect your computer from hackers.
We don't recommend the firewall that comes built in to Windows.
It doesn't block everything that may try to get in, and the entire firewall is written to the registry.
As various kinds of malware hack the Registry in order to disable the Windows firewall, it's far preferable to install one of the excellent third party solutions.

Three excellent free firewalls are:

Comodo
Sunbelt Kerio
Sygate
NOTE: DO NOT install more than one firewall.

Note: If you choose Comodo - Please be careful with the installation of the Comodo program, it comes bundled with an adware toolbar which you need to de-select when you are going through the installation process. It's not a malicious program, but it may be a privacy risk and I don't think you want it on your system.
(I use Comodo personally and it is an excellent firewall - very easy to use)

The McAfee site adviser addon for firefox is extremely good, if you update Firefox regularly, you shouldn't need any Anti-phishing software.

Malwarebytes is a standalone scanner, it will not conflict with any of your security programs.

Keep windows updated, the link is in my post above - set it to receive automatic updates. You should be upgraded to SP3. It has upgraded security features.

Follow the advice and be careful what you download…avoid torrents, cracks, keygens and porn and you should be safe.

take care :wavey:

Hi CB, I wanted to re-cap a problem I had last night after installing security software and ask if there's any further action you'd recommend. Here's the sequence of events: Removed WildTangent Removed Norton IS Installed Comodo Installed McAfee Site Advisor So far evrything tested fine. Downloaded and ran No Script. The first thing I noticed is the program had a Netscape icon, I don't have Netscape installed. At this point I can no longer connect to the internet, though the connection icon reported "staus: connected". Here's the properties: noscript-[removed]-fx+sm+fn Netscape Theme or Extension Package Removed No Script Removed McAfee, still nothing. Called my ISP and discovered the IP settings had changed. We tried to auto detect, then manual re-set, but the settings were lost each time I re-booted. After several failed attempts to manual and auto re-set the IP, the tech told me I should call HP for support, which I didn't do. This morning I re-set the IP settings again, and this time they stuck. I also had to change Comodo's firewall security level before I could connect. It was set to "block all content", which is strange because I was using the net before I installed No Script and did not set anything in Comodo. I now have the setting to "safe mode". So, that's it. Do you have any thoughts or concerns? Thanks.

Hi, Sorry I don't have an answer for you as to how your settings were changed..possibly Comodo, firewalls can be a little tricky to get going but after the settings are made it usually runs well. Your log is still clean - nothing has changed as far as that goes. I trust that you managed to get things up and running again to your satisfaction. If you use Firefox instead of IE you should be fine…sometimes the software just has to 'learn' how to play nicely together…but with the set up you have now, you should be well protected. Let me know if anything else happens. We have some excellent tech gurus in our tech forums and you may want to post a new topic there to see if there are any outstanding hardware/software issues as they are far more knowledgeable than I when it comes to connection issues etc. Link back to this topic so they can see you are clean of malware. Hopefully everything will be fine from now on.
Since this issue appears to be resolved … this Topic has been closed. Glad we could be of assistance. If you're the topic starter, and need this topic reopened, please contact a staff member with the address of the thread. Everyone else please begin a New Topic.
