The file location is: C:\WINDOWS\system32\dsound3dd.dll
Below is the hijack log file. Any assistance would be appreciated as none of the Anti Malware or other tools will get rid of it.

Due to the large numbers of HJT logs being posted, there are four things that you need to be aware of.

1) If you have already posted this log at another forum, you need to post here that you have done so and this topic will be closed.
Multiple posting not only ties up valuable resources, but could also result is some unpleasant side-effects for your system if you follow two sets of instructions at the same time.
If, during research, an identical log is identified at another forum, this thread will be closed.

2) If you don't post a meaningful reply to any of my posts within five days, this thread will be closed. Due to limited free time, I can only have so many open threads at any one time and if yours isn't active, somebody else's will be.
If, by omission, the thread hasn't be closed after five days and you post, it will just serve as a reminder to me to close it.
Please note that "I just dropped in to say Hi!" isn't a meaningful reply!

3) Malware removal is a tricky business, and malware writers don't tend to worry about the damage their creations do, so it is advisable to back-up all important files BEFORE we start. Although most cases have a successful conclusion, on occasion things don't go according to plan and it is better to be prepared for the worst.

4) Back-ups can get lost or damaged, so make two if the files are that important to you!

Please go to Jotti's and click on the Browse… button at the top and navigate to the following file, and then click on Submit:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\dsound3dd.dll

When all the scans have been completed, please copy and paste the results into your next reply.

If this site is busy, try VirusTotal: Click the Browse … button, navigate to the file and double click it and then click the Send button.

You may need to set Windows to show All Hidden Files and Folders - Instructions can be found here.
* These files are hidden to stop you accidentally removing something important.
It is advisable to hide them again after you have done.
*
I keep getting a "The file you uploaded is 0 bytes. It is very likely a firewall or a piece of malware is prohibiting you from uploading this file" message, even w/firewall off and clicking off on hiding files.

The file that you have uploaded is : dsound3d.dll The file that you mentioned in your first post is dsound3dd.dll. Did you just add one "d" too many in the original filename or did you submit the wrong file to Jotti's?
the latter. it is 3dd. i tried to copy & paste & got acces denied. tried uploading from directory and got the same 0 files uploaded. $%#&! now what?
1) Download KillBox.zip by Option^Explicit from here and save it to your Desktop.
You will need to extract the file(s) from the zipped folder.

To do this: Right-click on the zipped folder and from the menu that appears, click on Extract All…
In the Extraction Wizard window that opens, click on Next> and in the next window that appears, click on Next> again.
In the final window, click on Finish

You should now see the contents of the KillBox folder.

2) IMPORTANT
Close all other open windows and programs because this will require a reboot.

Double click KillBox.exe to run it.
Click the radio button to the left of 'Delete on Reboot', then 'copy and paste' the following line into the 'Full Path of File to Delete' textbox:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\dsound3dd.dll

After pasting the line click on the red and white 'X' button.
First you will be asked to confirm that 'All listed Files will be Deleted on Next Reboot' - click on Yes.
Next you will be asked to 'Files will be Removed on Reboot, Do you want to reboot now?' - click on Yes

If you get a "PendingFileRenameOperations Registry Data has been Removed by External Process!" message, just restart manually. After the reboot, the file should be gone

Let me know how you got on. Also, post a new log AND a description of how your PC is running.

* If you receive a message such as: "Component 'MsComCtl.ocx' or one of its dependencies not correctly registered: a file is missing or invalid." when trying to run Killbox, click here to download and then run missingfilesetup.exe - then try Killbox again.
Cool. So far so good. No Symantec pop up warning infection message. I'm curious what the difference would have been had I just gone in and manually deleted the file vs. the killbox method? One other new installation notice pops up in something like a folder notice in C:\Program Files\Common with a file name of helper.dll. The type is application extension. I have no clue of what that is. Any thoughts on changing passwords, etc? What about Java latest version pop ups? The infected file seemed to come in when I clicked on the Java update? Thanks again for your assistance!

I'm curious what the difference would have been had I just gone in and manually deleted the file vs. the killbox method?

I assumed that you wouldn't be able to, as your anti-virus didn't remove it - unless of course you didn't tell it to, which wouldn't make much sense.
As the file couldn't be uploaded to Jottis, I can't guarantee that it is malicious as it is possible that Symantec are falsely detecting this as a nasty. Killbox backs up anything that it removes, so if something doesn't work properly, you can always put it back where it came from and all should be well.

You don't appear to have mentioned this before. Is this a new "happening" or did you just keep it a secret? When does it pop up? What does it say, exactly?

Any thoughts on changing passwords, etc?

I don't know what the file is designed to do, so I don't know if it is necessary - but it never hurts to be on the safe side.

What about Java latest version pop ups? The infected file seemed to come in when I clicked on the Java update?

I have the latest version of Java, and don't have that file, so I can't say exactly how you came by it. We'll go for the update, and see what happens this time.

1) Go here and click on the Windows XP/Vista/2000/2003 Offline link in the Windows section near the top and save it to your Desktop.

2) Download JavaRa from here and save it to your Desktop.
You will need to extract the file(s):
Right click on the zipped folder and from the menu that appears, click on Extract All…
In the 'Extraction Wizard' window that opens, click on Next> and in the next window that appears, click on Next> again.
In the final window, click on Finish

***Please close any instances of Internet Explorer before continuing!***
  • Double-click JavaRa.exe to begin.
  • Pick your prefered language from the drop-down menu and click Select.
  • Click on Remove Older Versions to remove older version of Java - obvious really, isn't it!
  • Click Yes when prompted. When JavaRa is done, a notice will appear that a logfile has been produced. Click OK.
  • A logfile will pop up. Please save it to a convenient location, just in case you have any problems with Java afterwards.
3) Run the installer that you downloaded earlier.
The pop up was new…no secrets here! :pullhair: it only came up once and the only thing it said was: a new file application extension. has been installed in C:\Program Files\Common with a file name of helper.dll. I ran the Windows update & it said the program was already installed. I downloaded JavaRa and all appears well. I'll keep a look out for anything else suspicious but for now I think things are good. Much obliged for the help! :notworthy:
Assuming that you don't do anything else to upset the computer, you get the wonderful value "All Clear" speech to savour at your leisure:

I want you to run your PC as normal for a few days and when you are happy that everything is fine, do the following:

Disable System Restore,
Reboot your PC,
Re-enable System Restore,
Create a Restore Point - this will give a clean one should you need it in the future.
A tutorial for System Restore is available here.

The reason for waiting is that if removing the malware has caused a problem, which it occasionally does, you can put your PC back to how it was before the fix. This will re-install the malware, but an infected PC is better than an expensive paperweight!

Some bedtime reading: This is a very good tutorial about keeping your computer safe and secure on the internet.
