Hi Guys,

Had a lot of help from CatByte recently, see http://forums.whatthetech.com/Virut_32_Ter…eb_t101634.html

The problem was I caught a virus from being a cheapskate and it cannot be cleansed…Explorer.exe is infected according to ComboFix.

I have just remembered that I took an image of the Drive C a few months ago, the explorer.exe is 1009KB on the image but 1028KB on the C Drive, makes you think the extra 19KB may be the issue.

Here's the question..can I overwrite the explorer.exe in C Drive with the known last good version on the image?

Will it work or will it break my PC?

Cheers guys
Hi
It is very dangerous to run combofix without someone to let you know about it.

Now I am going to atemp to fix you pc. But it will take some research. Also I want you to under stand that you can't run any clean up prgrams they may interfear with my fixes. So please do not delete anything without being told try to fix any thing till told. I also want you to feel free to ask rather than doing something else.

You asked:

Here's the question..can I overwrite the explorer.exe in C Drive with the known last good version on the image?

The best way to fix a corupted ie7 is this way:
you can uninstall ie7 from add or remove programs. then you can download and install ie7 from here:

ie7

Afterreboot:

Please while I am gone do these steps:

Show hidden files, Here is how:

Windows XP

* Click Start.
* Open My Computer.
* Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
* Select the View Tab.
* Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
* Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
* Click Yes to confirm.
* Click OK.

NEXT:

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.

Download it

HERE:

This program is for XP, Windows 2000, Vista
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

NEXT:

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

HERE

* Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
* Be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform FULL SCAN, then click Scan.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going to Start > All Programs > Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware > Logs > log-date.txt
post a new scanner[HJT] log and the Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware log

Be sure not to delete anything intill said ok to. also don't run any other cleanup programs till we
get done it may goof ours up.
Also if you have any questions feel fre to ask first.

When you post a rhjt log and the Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware log , and if you have it the log from combofix.Do not run combofix again just post
the combofix log you got. do you still have it on the desktop?
[/coloer
let me know how your PC is behavuing

I will be waiting to see new logs
Please do these:
Hi mschroe919,

Just to be absolutely sure before continuing, the infected file is C:\Windows\Explorer.exe

Anyway I tried to remove IE7 via control panel but it does not offer an Uninstall Option, there are approximately 7 Security Updates which do, therefore I left alone for now!

Here are the logs (the 3 disabled security centre items had been manually disabled by me):

Cheers for looking and please don't take my questioning og the files the wrong way I am trying to understand which file is which!
Hi
I think you didn't do the maleware bytes right.

If you look back at the instructions in RED
you see this below:

* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location. The log can also be opened by going

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Security Center\FirewallDisableNotify (Disabled.SecurityCenter) -> Bad: (1) Good: (0) -> No action taken.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Security Center\UpdatesDisableNotify (Disabled.SecurityCenter) -> Bad: (1) Good: (0) -> No action taken.

I am going to check these out as well as C:\Windows\Explorer.exe
good luck mschroe919
Hi mschroe919, Yes, sorry saved the log then Removed Selected. After the restart AVG reported: Virus identified Exploit.PDF;"C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\QDUP63M9\3096[1].pdf";"Moved to Virus Vault";"08/04/2009, 12:48:13";"File";"C:\WINDOWS\pchealth\helpctr\binaries\helpctr.exe" Virus identified Exploit.PDF;"C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\QDUP63M9\1046[1].pdf";"Deleted";"08/04/2009, 12:48:13";"File";"C:\WINDOWS\pchealth\helpctr\binaries\helpctr.exe" I applied the Removal tool, I think I really am looking at a full install! Calibrator
Hi Calibrator Sorry there has not been any communications since 4'8/09 It was my fault I got doing things and actually over looked yours. Do you still need help and if so I will be glad to finish. Let me know mschroe919
Hi mschroe, I am going to Format and Re-Install, I am now getting multiple instances of "Exploit JavaScript Obfuscation (type 604)";"jl.chura.pl/rc/";"";"13/04/2009, 18:23:22";"file";"C:\WINDOWS\pchealth\helpctr\binaries\helpctr.exe", started in Firefox now here. Cheers for your help anyway. Calibrator
