Hi Paul_P,

:welcome:

My name is Tomk. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can take a while to research, so please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:

  • I will be working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for the issues on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two.

Then

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.
  • Note: If you receive a notice that some of the items couldn't be removed, that they have been added to the delete on reboot list, please reboot (shut down your computer then restart it).
Also "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Hello TomK,
Thanks for responding and your assistance.

I performed your steps and downloads… and restarted once completed both ATF Cleaner and Malwarebytes. To be expected – the start-up was slower. However once logged into Vista startup programs and overall speed was not increased nor decreased any.

I've attached the logfile from Malware Bytes and below is a new HjackThis log:

Paul_P,

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.

  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Archives
      Mail databases
  • Click on My Computer under Scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As….
  • Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  • Please post this log in your next reply.
Please see attached log… as requested. My computer was infected… please advise what I should should w/ it since it's in my outlook backup… and further steps/instruction. Thank you again for your assistance.
Paul_P, Unfortunately, I can't tell which emails contain the infection (there appears to be two). You need to go through your email and delete everything you don't want and/or need. The odds are that the infected email will have an attachment or at least a contain a link. Therefore don't open any attachments or follow any links that you aren't absolutely certain of. After you finish with your deletion assignment, please delete all of the files in your deleted files folder. Then let me have a new HijackThis log and tell me how things are running.
I believe it turned out to be a false-positive… I performed an Index Search in Outlook on all mail items and it resulted in 2 emails from 2007 that I had inquired about when I had an infection this/my other PC… which was resolved. In any event… I permanently deleted those 2 emails that had those embedded words & emptied the deleted items folder(s). Both a new scan of the originally infected file and new Hijack this log is attached. PC doesn't seem any different. The main concern is slow-start ups and high memory usage(s) of my ram (79%-85% usage) on a consistent basis.
Paul_P,

I'm just not finding a problem. I suggest you follow the links about slow computers at the end of this post.

Log looks good :D

You need to create a new Clean restore point:

  • Download SysRestorePoint to your desktop and unzip it to it's own folder.
  • Double click SysRestorePoint.exe so that we can make a new system restore point.
  • A box will pop up after it has made a new point, usually after a few seconds. Close that window and exit the program.
Remove all previous Restore Points
Click Start Menu > Run > copy and paste

cleanmgr

At top, click on More Options tab. Click Clean up… button in the System Restore box. Click on Yes button. When finished, click on Cancel button to exit.

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Check "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, Uncheck "Show hidden files and folders."
Check "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Delete LOP S&D

The following is my standard advice for the future. Use what you can and pat yourself on the back for what you're already doing.

Please take time to read Preventing Malware - Tools and Practices for Safe Computing. Very important information for your consideration is contained therein.

I would also suggest you read this:
So how did I get infected in the first place?
by Tony Klein

Also: "How to prevent malware"
by miekiemoes

I would further suggest that you also read this tutorial on slow running computers
and Help! My computer is slow! by miekiemoes.

Please respond back that you understand the above and let me know if you have any questions. Otherwise, this thread will be closed Resolved.
I understand… and than you very much for your assistance. I have an older PC running Windows XP2 — much slower than this Vista HPrem laptop. I'll post a new hi-jack log… and/or if I need further assistance with that other PC I hope to have as much assistance as you've provided with this computer. Thank you again. :wavey:
Since this issue appears to be resolved … this Topic has been closed. Glad we could be of assistance. If you're the topic starter, and need this topic reopened, please contact a staff member with the address of the thread. Everyone else please begin a New Topic.
