Hello,

Use IE 7 as my browser.

Today, 4/7/09, I was requested by "tallin" in the Meet & Greet section to provide more information using the link provided in their signature so I am editing my post to be sure I am answering all of the questions asked in that link.

Give as much specific information as possible.—- Dell laptop started having very slow connection to internet which progressed to inability to access internet without getting hung up. Task Manager stated "iexplore.exe hungapp" error when I do Contol/Alt/Delete. Also shows "System Idle Process" at 98 CPU when I check the Process tab. Thought it was just my internet access but now getting the hungapp message when trying to use MS Office apps, such as Word & Excel.

Details of your machine Brand-name and model, desktop or laptop, CPU, RAM, age of machine.—- DELL INSPIRON 1501 (approx 2 -1/2 yrs old)

Details of your Operating System (Windows Vista(version), XP (pro or home), Win2000, Win ME/98/95, Linux, dual boot) —- WINDOW XP PRO

Details of the Application(s) running when the problem occurred: (Firefox, Internet Explorer, Office, online game, etc) —- IE 7

Explain the problem you are experiencing (what’s not working). —- When I try to access the internet my laptop freezes. I can open Task Manager and do control/alt/delete to stop the non-responding. But, once I do that, I can't open any windows apps like Word or Excel and I can't use the Start menu button to shut down. I must use the power button.

Put the problem “in context”.
What were you doing at the time or just before the problem occurred? —– was searching the internet using Google (was looking up the fed govt student loan website.)

What recent changes to the machine have you made? (New Hardware/New Software/Updates) —- None

If Error Messages were displayed, post the “entire” exact text of the Error. —- Error report fromk Task Manager: "szAppName : iexplore.exe szAppVer : 7.0.6000.16791 sz ModName : hungapp swzModVer : 0.0.0.0 ofset : 00000000" Error report contents: line1.) "C:\DOCUME~1\Michelle\LOCALS~1\Temp\WERcOea.dir00\iexplore.exe.mdmp" line 2.) "C:\DOCUME~1\Michelle\LOCALS~1\Temp\WERcOea.dir00\appcompat.txt

What have you already done to try to fix the problem? – Did McAfee scan and it came up clean. Disabled 3rd party toolbars (did not have any installed, but did anyway), Also removed a program called "Viewpoint" and cleaned out temp files too

Since I can't access the internet using IE on the laptop (am writing using my slowing desktop) due to issues described above, is there some other way I can get to HiJackThis site to get a report? Looks like some people (from reading posts) use something called Firefox but I don't know how to access that…

Thanks!

Today, 4/8/09 I was able to finally get to the HijackThis site and run a log which I am attaching. Laptop froze after I e-mailed this to myself at AOL. Hope I did this correctly:

Hi mgw7625,

:welcome:

My name is Tomk. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can take a while to research, so please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:

  • I will be working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for the issues on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

I'm not seeing anything obvious. Let's see if you can get some scans to work.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two.

Then

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.
  • Note: If you receive a notice that some of the items couldn't be removed, that they have been added to the delete on reboot list, please reboot (shut down your computer then restart it).
Also "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Hello TomK, Thank you for responding to my plea for help. I am just reading your post and will try to download the executables you mention. However, please note: it took me several days to be able to finally download the HiJackThis log as I keep getting hungup (not responding) messages for IE when I try to get to the internet. Please be patient with me while I try to reply to your requests and follow your instructions. A reminder: I am using my desktop to respond to you and the issue is with my laptopn so I can't click on your links because I can't get to this site from the laptop without getting hung up.
Hi, I was able to do all that you asked me to do. ATF cleaner freed 74.436 MBs. Here is the Malware log and i will post a new HiJackthis log in a separate post. Sorry for the mulitple posts but I forgot to tell you how the laptop is acting now. Well, at first it seemed cured. I was able to go to several websites without geting hungup but, then I went to "Carsdirect.com" and got stuck and had to use Task Manager to end the session. I got the same "iexplore.exe hung app" error. After Iused Task Manager, everything froze. I couldn't access Word or Excel nor could I right-click on my desktop. I couldn't even use the Start ficon for shut-down. Had to shut down manually. I also noticed something when I was stuck on the Carsdirect.com site…although the browser window at the top had the website name, at the bottom of my screen was something like "http://ad. doubleclick.". Don't know if that is normal but thought I'd tell you.
mgw7625,

Sounds like you can get on the internet. Hopefully you can do this scan.

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link –> http://forums.whatthetech.com/How_Disable_…ams_t96260.html

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[external image: Posted Image]

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Notes:

1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.
3. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
4. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you – please tell your helper.
5. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.
I have McAfee and followed your link to disable but when I right-click on the "M" it doesn't show an "EXIT " option to choose from. I only shows these options: Updates Scan Quick links (these choices include Home, View Recent events, Get Support Now, My Account, Manage Network, Maintain Computer or Lockdown Firewall) Change Settings Verify Subscription Update Center Customer Support I don't see any way to disable.
mgw7625, Try these directions: Please navigate to the system tray and double-click the taskbar icon to open Security Center. * Click Advanced Menu (bottom mid-left). * Click Configure (left). * Click Computer & Files (top left). * VirusScan can be disabled in the right-hand module and set when it should resume or you can do that manually later on.
Here is the Combofix log

COMBOFIX-Script

  • Please open Notepad (Start -> Run -> type notepad in the Open field -> OK) and copy and paste the text present inside the code box below:

    Regnull::
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Reinstall\æHõwæ*]
  • Save this as CFScript.txt and change the "Save as type" to "All Files" and place it on your desktop.

    [external image: Posted Image]
  • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before following the steps below. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
  • Referring to the screenshot above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe.
  • ComboFix will now run a scan on your system. It may reboot your system when it finishes. This is normal.
  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Copy and paste the contents of the log in your next reply.
CAUTION: Do not mouse-click ComboFix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Please also give me a new HijackThis log and let me know how things are running.

I was able to go to the Carsdirect.com site without any issues. I also went to 2 other sites without freezing. I am cautiously optimistic at this point. Perhaps I am disinfected??? do you know what I have/had and do you know how I got it? Would like to try to avoid getting whatever it again, if at all possible.
