Hi

I have multiple symptoms, including:

* Web redirects in both IE and Firefox - especially when searching for pages in Google. This is intermittent, but as examples:
- Search for "AVG" and clicking on the first link redirects to http://google-stat.com/
- Search for "Kaspersky" and clicking on the first link redirects to http://www.2009softwarereviews.com/
- Other redirects have been to porn sites and couponmountain.com
* When trying to run "cmd.exe" or "regedit.exe" from Start… Run (or from a link on the desktop or from Task Manager), Explorer crashes and nothing else happens
* Other commands (e.g. winmsd.exe, winver.exe, calc.exe) run fine from Start… Run
* AVG 8.0 cannot update over the web - I get an "unable to connect to update server" error. I have uninstalled, rebooted and reinstalled AVG 8.0 from a new download from the free.avg.com website, and am still unable to update
* Windows Update will not run - on going to the Microsoft Update site, IE hangs with an hourglass for around a minute and eventually gives error 0x80072F76

I have so far:
* Run ERUNT
* Run ATF_Cleaner (clean all)
* Run Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Quick Scan - the only two items detected are below

Registry Data Items Infected:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Security Center\AntiVirusDisableNotify (Disabled.SecurityCenter) -> Bad: (1) Good: (0) -> No action taken.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Security Center\FirewallDisableNotify (Disabled.SecurityCenter) -> Bad: (1) Good: (0) -> No action taken.

HiJack This! Log is below.

Please can you help?

Much appreciated,
Si

Hi,

Please download DaonolFix from the link below and save it to your Desktop
Download Mirror #1
  • Double-click DaonolFix.exe to run it.
  • Select 1. Find Daonol (no fix) by typing 1 and pressing Enter.
  • You will see a lot of files being listed - don't worry, they are just being scanned.
  • A log will open, please post the contents of that log in your next reply (it can also be found on your desktop, called DaonolFix.txt).

Download ComboFix by sUBs from here or here

Note: If you already have a copy of ComboFix on your system it is essential that you delete it before downloading this copy.

**Save it to your desktop**

Please open the AVG Control Center program -> double-click on the "AVG Resident Shield" component (looks like this: [external image: Posted Image]) -> deselect the "Turn on AVG Resident Shield" checkmark and save the setting.
When you need to enable the AVG Resident Shield, ( I'll let you know when) just open the AVG Control Center program -> double-click on the "AVG Resident Shield" component -> select the "Turn on AVG Resident Shield" checkmark and save the setting.

Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts. If you are prompted to install the Recovery Console I recommend you go ahead and hit yes.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please save that log to post in your next reply along with a fresh HJT log

Notes:
  • Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.
  • ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
  • Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you - please let me know.
  • ComboFix disconnects your machine from the internet when it runs. This connection should be automatically restored when ComboFix completes its run. If ComboFix runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.
Thanks.
Hi Thanks for your suggestions. I am posting all three logs below as attachments. On initial testing here, it seems that I can bring a command prompt up again and IE has not redirected me to any unexpected web pages! Just out of interest, could you tell me what type of malware was causing this? Does it have a name by any chance? I'm just curious as I've not seen anything like this before and none of the Anti-Virus tools I'd tried found anything untoward with my machine! My girlfriend is very grateful now that she can use the computer again! Let me know if there's anything else I should be doing. Thanks Si
Hi,

Things are looking much better. This one is called Daonol by most AntiVirus programs (hence the name DaonolFix).

Just a couple of things to clean up here.

1. Please open Notepad
  • Click Start , then Run
  • Type notepad.exe in the Run Box.
2. Now copy/paste the entire content of the codebox below into the Notepad window:

File::
c:\windows\pynwyw.lft

Registry::
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\drivers32]
"aux2"=-
3. Save the above as CFScript.txt

4. Then drag the CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe as depicted in the animation below. This will start ComboFix again.

[external image: Posted Image]

5. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), please post the following reports/logs into your next reply:
  • Combofix.txt
  • A new HijackThis log.
Now, please run MalwareBytes' again. If it finds anything, please post the log it gives after removing what it finds.

Let me know how things are running after this.

Thanks.
Hi,

Please go to this site:
Bleeping Computer Submission

Please paste a link to this topic in the first field. Browse to the following file:
C:\QooBox\Quarantine\c\windows\pynwyw.lft.vir

Click Send File.

How are things running now? Any more problems?

You don't appear to be running any third party Firewall software.

Install a firewall! Without a firewall you are very susceptible to being hacked, and people could gain access to your computer. If you don't have a firewall I strongly recommend you download ONE of the following:
1) Comodo
2) Agnitum
3) Sunbelt/Kerio

Thanks.
