I have a problem with my computer that has a few issues. The first being that in my control panel when I bring it up shows something running under "svchost.exe" at all times and it uses around 90% of my memory. When I try to stop this from running it comes back and I can't get rid of it. When I do stop it before it comes back I lose some functions such as sound. Secondly around every Tuesday I lose use of Internet Explorer, Yahoo messenger and MSN Messenger. I have to uninstall them and reinstall them to get them to work. As of today this has fixed that but as of this morning this is not working. I have the 2009 version of Norton Antivirus and have all the updates current. When I try to run Windows Update it won't let me install them, in this I mean it will go to the downloading screen but then won't do anything past that point. Do you have any suggestions or help? I have run the Norton search for the conflicker virus and it did not come up with anything. Thank you! My email address isxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxThank you again!
Hello Challen

Welcome to the Whatthetech Malware Removal Forum,

All advice given by anyone volunteering here, is taken at your own risk.
While best efforts are made to assist in removing infections safely, unexpected stuff can happen.

For security reasons, please dont post any personal info like your email address and such, the bad guys read these forums .

Download Trendmicros Hijackthis to your desktop.
  • Double click it to install
  • Follow the prompts and by default it will install in C:\Program Files\Trendmicro\Hijackthis\Highjackthis.exe
  • Open HJT Scan and Save a Log File, it will open in Notepad
  • Go to Format and make sure Wordwrap is Unchecked
  • Go to Edit> Select All…..Edit > Copy and Paste the new log into this thread by using the Submit Reply and not start a New Thread.
DO NOT have HijackThis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.
Make sure your logged in to WhattheTech, you cant post otherwise

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here or Here

  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.<– Don't forget this
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and Paste the entire report in your next reply along with a New Hijackthis log.

I can bring up the update page and then when I press Download Updates it hangs on the download window. Any suggestions on that? Also I still have something running in the background that is using around 90% of my Memory and when I pull up the Control Panel it is showing up as "svchost.exe"! When I have tried to go and stop that function it does come back up and after that I lose some functionalities like sound. Thanks, Challen
Challen

Don't mess with svchost, windows wont run without it, your going to mess up your computer if you keep trying to delete it.

You had Malwarebytes set to TAKE NO ACTION which didn't accomplish much, you need to read the instructions , run it again and make sure you select Remove Selected.

Post the new Malwarebytes log and a new HJT log please and then we will dig deeper
Ken, I checked the log entries upon completion of the scan and deleted them after they were quarantined. There is nothing left that comes up from the scan. So were good now. What would make the svchost.exe run consistently and use up that much memory? I believe the problem lies within my Windows Update. When I try to run Windows Update it will not complete but locks up instead. Any suggestions as to why that would happen? I have downloaded RSIT.exe and have run a couple scans with that. Would you like to see the scans from that?
Sorry, here is the new HJT log after scan:

Something to mentio as well, I have to stop the "svchost.exe" as my system was using up too much memory and I couldn't open up "My Computer" to run the scan.
Ken, I deleted all the items that came up in the Malwarebytes scan. It comes up clean now. Here is the new HJT scan log:

Challen,

You have markers in your log for the SDBot worm. This is most likely whats making svchost running so high

This tool needs to be run from Safemode to be effective so download it to your desktop then boot to Safemode to run it

To Enter Safemode

  • Go to Start> Shut off your Computer> Restart
  • As the computer starts to boot-up, Tap the F8 KEY somewhat rapidly,
this will bring up a menu.
  • Use the Up and Down Arrow Keys to scroll up to Safemode
  • Then press the Enter Key on your Keyboard
Tutorial if you need it How to boot into Safemode

Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
  • Choose your usual account.
  • Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
  • It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
  • Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum with a new HijackThis log
Wow Ken that wasn't good. I ran SDFIX and when it rebooted my computer it ran the malware detector then when that stopped my system started up and an error window opened that said my AI Booster wasn't running. It said to go to my BIOS settings to check it then I got a blue screen. I then had to run my system restore out of Safe Mode and reboot from last Friday. I'm rerunning the hijackthis and pasting the log here. Is that supposed to happen after I run SDFIX?

Challen,

Cant say that I have seen that happen before..BUT SDFix removed the infection.

Open HijackThis > Do a System Scan Only, close your browser and all open windows including this one, the only program or window you should have open is HijackThis, check the following entries and click on Fix Checked.

Can you see if I still have that worm that would cause havoc with my system memory? Why would it affect my windows update? Thanks a ton for your help!

I would like to rerun that SDIT.exe but am afraid that it will have the same affect it did last time.
No need to run SDFix and no need to keep using System Restore

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
  • See this Link for programs that need to be disabled and instruction on how to disable them.
  • Remember to re-enable them when we're done.

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[external image: Posted Image]

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply along with a New Hijackthis log.

*If there is no internet connection when Combofix has completely finished then restart your computer to restore back the connections.
When I disabled both my Norton Anti-Virus and Windows Defender to start the scan ComboFix said I still had AVG running on my PC. Funny thing is that I uninstalled AVG last January. So I don't know why it said it was still running. Here are the log tiles are requested.
