Hi all,

I recently posted my Hijackthis log in this forum, but I forgot to include my Malwarebytes log. (This might be the reason why nobody replied to my post.) I apologize for not following protocol.

As mentioned, my search results are re-directed to random sites. Sometimes I can simply go back and retrieve the desired search result website, but sometimes I can't. Lately, Firefox has been completely freezing up and shutting down.

Interesting note: I was unable to download an update for Malwarebytes. When I ran the scan, no malicious files were discovered.

Ok, below you will find my Hijackthis log AS WELL AS my Malwarebytes log.

Thanks!

Hi soonersherm,

:welcome:

My name is Tomk. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can take a while to research, so please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:

  • I will be working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for the issues on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

I closed your other thread.

You aren't running Anti Virus Software

Anti-virus software are programs that detect, cleanse, and erase harmful virus files on a computer, Web server, or network.
Unchecked, virus files can unintentionally be forwarded to others, including trading partners and thereby spreading infection. Because new viruses regularly emerge, anti-virus software should be updated frequently. Anti-virus software can scan the computer memory and disk drives for malicious code. They can alert the user if a virus is present, and will clean, delete (or quarantine) infected files or directories. Please download a free anti-virus software (for personal use), from one these excellent vendors NOW:

1) Antivir PersonalEditionClassic
-Free anti-virus software for Windows.
-Detects and removes more than 50,000 viruses. Free support.
2) avast! 4 Home Edition
-Anti-virus program for Windows.
-The home edition is freeware for noncommercial user
3) AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition
- Free edition of the AVG anti-virus program for Windows.
- Available for single computer use for home and non commercial use.

It is strongly recommended that you run only one antivirus program at a time. Having more than one antivirus program active in memory uses additional resources and can result in program conflicts and false virus alerts.

  • Please open HijackThis and run Do a system scan only
  • Check the boxes next to ONLY the entries listed below(if present):
    • R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = about:blank
      O2 - BHO: (no name) - {9ECB9560-04F9-4bbc-943D-298DDF1699E1} - (no file)
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\QTTask.exe" -atboottime
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Alcmtr] ALCMTR.EXE
  • Close all programs except for HijackThis.
  • Click on Fix checked
  • A box will pop up asking you if you wish to fix the selected items. Please choose YES.
  • Once it has fixed them, please exit/close HijackThis.

Then please run a full scan with whichever Anti-virus product you installed. Let me know anything it found.

Then let me have a new HijackThis log.
Thanks Tom…

By the way, before I noticed your reply to my original post, I downloaded and ran a smart scan with the latest version of Avast. It found nothing. I must have stirred up the hornet's nest, because immediately after I ran the scan, all browser access has been disabled. I am online, but when I load up a URL, I get a blank white screen and the progress note on the bottom says "done". I cannot look at any websites, whatsoever. Luckily, I have my wife's laptop.

I followed your instructions and fixed those files using Hijackthis.

I then ran a thorough scan using Avast.

The results identified 66 files that Avast was "unable to scan". Most of them are various mP3s or jpg, but there are a few other file types that I don't recognize. I can't figure out how to copy this list and post it here. Shall I select all the files and "fix" them using Avast?

Thanks for your help!

Here's the newest Hijackthis log: (It took me a while to transfer this due to not having internet access on my laptop)

soonersherm,

Let's see if we can get you back online.

Download WinsockFix

http://downloads.subratam.org/WinsockFix.zip

1.) UnZip WinsockFix.zip (Pay close attention to where the file is extracted to.)
2.) Run WinsockFix.exe.
3.) Click the Fix button.

This program will clean up your TCP/IP connection and rebuild the database. After the program is complete please reboot

Let me know how you do.
Tomk, Thanks again for attempting to help me out. I downloaded and ran Winsockfix as you instructed, rebooted, and the problem persists.
soonersherm,

Let's see if we can get a little more information:

1. Click on Start then Run
2. Type cmd and press Enter or click OK
3. Type ipconfig /all and press Enter
4. Right click on the command prompt window title bar, select Edit then Mark
5. Use the mouse to select all the output from the ipconfig command, them click the right mouse button. This will copy the data to the clipboard.
6. Click Add Reply here and paste the data you copied into it.
Tomk, Once I enter "cmd", my desktop blanks out, reappears, and the Windows antivirus warning balloon appears. I don't even get to look at a black Dos window. The same happens when I try to run "regedit". However, "msconfig" still works. Thanks again for your help.
Tomk, When I attempt to run the ComboFix.exe, I am greeted with an error prompt that reads: "….ComboFix.exe is not a valid Win32 application" I remember that while trying to download the file, the Firefox download manager progress bar scanned back and forth, like the light on the Knight Rider car, until a download error message popped up. (Can't remember exactly what it said).
soonersherm, Please delete your copy of combofix. Then download a new copy and transfer to the infected machine. Restart the computer is Safe mode and try to run ComboFix.
Tomk, I successfully transferred a good ComboFix.exe into the infected computer, but wouldn't you know it, I am unable to reboot into Safe Mode using F8… Are there any other ways to get into Safe Mode? I don't have the original boot disk from Sony. I do however have a DVD-R entitled "Vaio Startup Recovery Disc"
soonersherm, Let's make sure I have this correct. You are able to start your computer in normal mode but not able to access the internet. You are unable to enter safe mode. What happens after you tap the F8 key?
Tomk,

Great News!

First of all, my inability to start in Safe Mode was nothing more than an F8 timing issue. Once I properly started in Safe Mode, I was able to run Combofix. However, I was given a warning to disable Avast before the scan commenced. Without really knowing how to accomplish this, (there were no icons near the clock on the bottom right of my desktop), I uninstalled Avast and proceeded.

The program ran its scan. I have included the log below the ipconfig /all text.

The good news is that I now have internet access and am now posting this reply using the infected computer.

And now the ipconfig /all text and the Combofix scan log:

soonersherm,

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.

  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Archives
      Mail databases
  • Click on My Computer under Scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As….
  • Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  • Please post this log in your next reply.
Tomk, If it ain't one thing… Every single time the Kaspersky Full scan gets to around 30%, it completely freezes up. It gets hung up on one of my mP3s and shuts down. Should I change the settings of the scan? Or perhaps there is another program I can use to do a full scan. Thanks again for your help.
