Hi Abydos…
Did all that ..still no change . The LSP showed MSAFD Tcpip (tcp/ip), I ran the netsh winsock reset prompt in the start-run menu…small balck box up for a couple of seconds and then gone (I guess that was it resetting?), I shutdown, and then on restart used the Ccleaner…

Mick
I'm a bit stumped here at the moment, since that didn't work out. Well, despite
the frustrating work on this, we get to eliminate some things. I'll have to take
a bit of time in the think-tank, and in the meantime, Doug or one of the other
tech's might step in with ideas.
Right now, its trial and error, as we don't know for sure what is wrong. It could
be a minor registry error or something bigger. Its not satisfying, and certainly
not for you. We will get to it, one way or another.
A single thing you could consider (since you talked about formatting it) would be
to make a install repair. Its not foolproof, and a lot of things can go wrong there,
but it is a option to consider before reformatting. I'll provide some reading on it below.
Thanks Abydos…
Its good to hear you've got your 'thinking cap' on for me!..lol. I really do appreciate all your help and assistance, this type of thing is just so frustrating !
Just recap ..AVG will not update and neither wold the other AV I put on and took off again. I have been updating AVG by manually downloading the files and installing them, however spybot updates fine.
The browsers hang from time to time, crash out or occasional misdirect.
I'm sure all these issue are connectivity related and (I say this hopefully!), down to the same single cause ..the problem obviously remains though ..what is that cause!!!
Thanks again Abydos, I'll wait to hear from you or Doug…
Best Regards,
Mick
Thanks…
I've tried cmd in the start run, all that happens is that all the icons from my desktop disappear and then return, nothing else come up on the screen to enter the netsh winsock reset into ..any ideas?
Regards,
Mick
Does the same thing as CMD in the start run menu…all desktop icons disappear for a few seconds, then come back …and that's that!! …nothing else happens
Hmmm.
Sounds like we have registry strings missing. It might have to include
a registry fix, but right now I would rather look at some more benign
methods in getting this back. Simply because I (we) don't know what
else would be missing. So a registry fix might do more harm than good.
I'll look into it.
One thing you can run, without fear of damaging anything, is the CHKDSK.
Simply right-click your C drive, choose properties, then second tab (can't remember
the english term here, got danish XP) You will now see two radio buttons, choose
examine now, place a mark in both options. You will get a notion that windows can't
perform this right now, and if you want to schedule it to next reboot. Answer yes to this,
and reboot.
Upon reboot, a 5 stage scan will run. Let it run through without interruption. It can take
anywhere from 10 minutes to an hour, depending on severity of file damage.
See if it alters anything regarding your situation and Command Prompt.
Otherwise, I am back to the thinking tank

Bit faster than I thought I would be Abydos…did it all ..on rebooting the XP blue screen came up, bit to fast to fully read!…but said C drive clean..and was gone! …still no change with the AV update though!!

Now that sounds weird. Second tab in properties, examine now, place two marks in what to examine, then reboot.
Abydos…
Well it worked this time! …took over an hour, mostly of 5of 5 looking at the drive space. The computer seems to load up faster, and the browser seems faster and smoother …but still no AV update…I wonder…are we getting somewhere now!?…
CMD still wont run though…

Hi Mick
Sounds good about the restored speed. Which would indicate that something got
repaired, just not what we were after, *sigh*
Well, its back to the thinking tank for me. I'll post as soon as I have something solid.
And Happy Easter by the way
Regards
