Thanks Abydos… 'Bits' was on auto …I've now changed that to Manual. There are two Remote Procedure Call . Remote Procedure Call (RPS) Locator .. which was and I have left set on manual and Remote Procedure Call (RPS) which is set on auto, but is blanked in grey so you can't pull down the menu to alter it… Having made the one change to BITS I have tried the AV update and…… it still doesn't !!! :smack: Regards, Mick
Guys…. Now I am paranoid ! … I only posted a single reply…not three!!… I'm wondering, with all the things this machine is doing (and not doing!), if I don't need the help of you 'tech guys' but a good exorcist !!!
Double, Triple, multiple postings occasionaly happen. My own posting has been suffering "lag" today. Sometimes when traffic is heavy posts get influenced that way. Sorry, but don't worry about it. I'll make the extra posts disapear, but it will be by design and not by any spiritual monkey-business. Sorry this is so frustrating to you. We'll get a better understanding of the situation and won't give up on you. Doug
Thanks Doug…. I've set myself the target of either sorting this out over this Easter holiday weekend, or reformatting it all next Tuesday, the IT equivalent of euthanasia!!! Thanks though for your continued help and support…. Two more things to mention ,,, Spybot updates perfectly, unlike any of the two AV's I've tried! .. and I have rune the SFC twice more…and it took at least 40mins each time!….. Regards, Mick
Thats funny.

You see, this is a test from Avira when people have update problems.
If they can connect to the link above, the fault doesn't lie with Avira or
update services.

Could you please try repair your internet connection.

Control panel, network connections, right-click your LAN connection and choose repair.

Windows will now attempt to repair your connection. If you get any error messages at this
stage, please post them.

Next right-click the LAN connection once more, choose properties this time, on the general
tab
click Internet protocol (TCP/IP), click properties.

Make sure that "Obtain DNS server address automatically" is marked.

See how it goes after this about updating. You might need to find the avgupd.exe in the AVG folder
to get it started.

Cheers
Thanks Doug…. I've done the repair and no error message came up, and the obtain dns server address automatically was already selected. I've shutdown AVG and then restarted it …the same 'unable to connect to the update server' message still comes up when you go to update. I have download the latest updates from AVG manually and installed them in avg, just in case that may help, and it hasn't! Regards, Mick
If this is specific to only AVG now, you might benefit from asking the tech's in AVG's forum. Are there any other issues at this stage besides AVG? Cheers
Hi Mick

What happens if you connect directly on cable, bypassing the router?
Even might try it in safe-mode also.

The test you shows, last part where it says:

HTTP: Error 12029 connecting to www.hotmail.com: A connection with the server could not be established
Could not make an HTTP connection.

Definitely shows a connectivity problem of sorts. Might be due to packet loss. I'll have to investigate that particular
error, never seen a error 12029, so it is unfamiliar to me.

Regards
Hi… I've tried connecting directly to the cable (and disabled the wireless), still no difference, the AV still fails to connect… Regards, Mick
Hi Mick

Ok.

Thats eliminates the router. Next thing to try would be your WinSock. But this is not without
faults. Applications who install their own LSP (Layered service Provider) such as Google Earth
for instance, will have it reset, and the program need re-installment in that case. We can have
a look at the Catalog first, take note of what is there, and then go ahead Fix. Run the catalog
service again, and see if anything is missing. That way, you'll know which programs needs to
be re-installed, if any. The fix will reset your winsock, setting it back to default settings.
Winsock often becomes corrupted when malware have been removed, and that malware
tampered with the winsock. In those cases, only a reset of it, will restore all normal connectivity.

Let me hear your thoughts on this.

Regards
Thanks for that… It sounds good to me …but can you talk me through exactly how to do that please ..where is winsock, how do I access it and fix it?… Thanks…. Mick
Hi Mick

First off, we need to run the catalog service, so you can take note of what is there.

Go to Start, choose RUN, Type: CMD

This will bring up the command-prompt. In the Cmd-prompt, type: netsh winsock show catalog, enter

It will show a long list, which is what we are after. Another option on how to show these info we need, is
shown below.

Another (perhaps easier way) is to type: Winmsd in RUN under start menu.
Then select components, Network, protocol. The LSP's should be of the type MASFD or
RSVP. But for now, just take note of what is there.

Once done with that, type the following in the command prompt:

netsh winsock reset, enter.

Reboot your machine for good measure. Then clean your TEMP files with Ccleaner. Try update.
