Hi,

For the past several days, each afternoon, I have getting almost continuous warnings from Symantec Endpoint that a trojan file of the apq##.tmp type is resident in the quarantine. I have deleted the files from the quarantine and have run full scans of Symantec, Adaware, Spybot, Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, a-squared free and SUPER AntiSpywrare. Each of these scans have come back clean.

Thank you in advance for any help you can provide.

Hi cysticerci,

:welcome:

My name is Tomk. I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. HijackThis logs can take a while to research, so please be patient and I'd be grateful if you would note the following:

  • I will be working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for the issues on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner
Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time or two.

Then

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please save it to a convenient location and post the results.
  • Note: If you receive a notice that some of the items couldn't be removed, that they have been added to the delete on reboot list, please reboot (shut down your computer then restart it).
Also "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Thanks for your help. Impatient to wait for a response, with many pop ups, I downloaded several programs and ran a few online scans with widely disparate results. However, between McAfee, SUPER antispyware, and asqured free and the programs I was previously running, there are no more messages. Of course, my computer is now running many more programs, which is slowing it down and preventing me from doing my real work. cysticerci,

As you suspect, you've got to many security programs running which can cause major problems (including slowdowns). You only want one anti-virus, one firewall, one anti-spyware with real-time scanning.

Anti-virus:
Symantec(Norton)
Computer Associates
McAfee
a-squared Free
Choose one to keep and uninstall the others.

Anti-spyware:
Superantisypware
Lavasoft Ad-aware
Choose one to keep, then uninstall the other

Then

Your Java is out of date and you have other old versions still on your computer, those old versions are now a security vulnerability:

Please download JavaRa to your desktop and unzip it to its own folder
  • Run JavaRa.exe, pick the language of your choice and click Select. Then click Remove Older Versions.
  • Accept any prompts.
  • Open JavaRa.exe again and select Search For Updates.
  • Select Update Using Sun Java's Website then click Search and click on the Open Webpage button. Download and install the latest Java Runtime Environment (JRE) version for your computer - Version 6 update 13

Then please let me have a new HijackThis log
Thanks again for all of your help. I have updated java. Do you have any suggestions from among the antispy and antivirus programs already installed, or do you suggest another? Best,
cysticerci, I prefer the free Anti-virus programs. I don't know much about a-squared Free. I personally think all three of the others are resource hogs that cost money but don't work any better than the freebies. However, they do work. I'd have to probably choose Computer Associates as my preference between them but you should keep the one you've paid for. When we are done, I'll give you some links that will give you links to free programs. You should considers switching when your paid subscription is over. I would keep the Superantispyware and remove the Ad-aware.
OK, done. I removed Lavasoft and asquared as well as norton's. I had to keep both CA and McAfee, however.

The Superantispyware was a free download without realtime protection. Was unistalling lavasoft (full package) in its favor a mistake? I still have the code for lavasoft adaware to reinstall. Thanks again,
cysticerci, There isn't a problem getting your money's worth out of a paid prescription. If your lavasoft has real-time protection, Superantisyware (without real-time protection) or Malwarebytes' can be used as a "every now and then" scanner as they don't have a real-time component that will interfere. I'm confused on your anti-virus. Why did you have to keep McAfee and CA?
Tomk, 1. No issue with paid subscriptions, just want to get the best protection and efficiency of my machine. 2. CA doesn't update, but can't be removed (corporate). Corporate also provided McAfee and Nortons and wants one of them installed, so my/ your choice there. 3. For anti-spyware, should I reinstall lavasoft, or is there a better choice? 4. Any other steps needed after the latest hijack this report? Thanks again,
cysticerci,

If you can't update CA it's worthless. Please talk to corporate and see how you can get it removed. Between the other two, I would keep Norton (I really don't like McAfee but it is definately better than nothing). You need to get it down to one Anti-virus.

Lavasoft is a decent real-time anti-spyware. You can supplement it with superantispyware or Malwarebytes' once a month or so.

To your HijackThis log.

Normally I'd have you "fix" the trusted zones. However, these appear to be corporate so I'd leave them. Having sites listed in the trusted zone creates a little vulnerability by the fact when you designate them as trusted, you bypass some of the security checks.

Here is some close out procedures.

You need to create a new Clean restore point:

  • Download SysRestorePoint to your desktop and unzip it to it's own folder.
  • Double click SysRestorePoint.exe so that we can make a new system restore point.
  • A box will pop up after it has made a new point, usually after a few seconds. Close that window and exit the program.
Remove all previous Restore Points
Click Start Menu > Run > copy and paste

cleanmgr

At top, click on More Options tab. Click Clean up… button in the System Restore box. Click on Yes button. When finished, click on Cancel button to exit.

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Check "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, Uncheck "Show hidden files and folders."
Check "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

The following is my standard advice for the future. Use what you can and pat yourself on the back for what you're already doing.

Please take time to read Preventing Malware - Tools and Practices for Safe Computing. Very important information for your consideration is contained therein.

I would also suggest you read this:
So how did I get infected in the first place?
by Tony Klein

Also: "How to prevent malware"
by miekiemoes

Please respond back that you understand the above and let me know if you have any questions. Otherwise, this thread will be closed Resolved.
Tomk, All done. Thanks again. I will make time to read the suggested articles, and maybe in doing so I will be able to figure out what happened. My system currently is exactly as it was when the errors started, and only the "extraneous" software managed to stop the messages (and perhaps remove the trojan if there really was one). As this is a business computer, I really only use it for business purposes- with regular updates, etc. Perhaps one "spurious" warning in a year, especially in the current environment, reflects safe practice? cysticerci, As you are aware, the most important part to security is the person at the keyboard. A computer used for business that is not used to "surf" the internet, doesn't have nearly the risk as a home computer taken to dubious sights. A couple last things. If you check the terms of use at this site, you will find that we are not allowed to work on business computers. I haven't really done anything to your system so I chose to continue with you. I'm just letting you know for the future. :) And lastly, I am inherently nosy. I recognized medical programs on your computer. Pharmacological, radiology. Then there is your nic. I had a niece with Cystic Fibrosis. If you don't mind - what do you do in real life?
