Hi,

So I've been searching online for several days for fixes for my issues and finally stumbled upon a whatthetech post with details that matched the symptoms of my problems. I read through it and after much work it was resolved, so I have high hopes for my own conquest of this beast, with help of course. That thread is this one For about two weeks, I have been redirected from almost every link I click on in Google. This has been a minor annoyance, as I can just click the back button to get to the real link. Within the last week, I started getting a warning from McAfee that it had detected lando and artemis trojans and removed them. After this my browser would close. Sometimes I could muck about online for an hour without issues, while some sessions were shut down within seconds. This is when it really got frustrating.

As I mentioned, my symptoms match the link I provided above. I am being redirected from most links I click on while browsing, my browser closes frequently after either of the trojans are found by mcafee, and the mcafee symbol in the bottom right likes to duplicate itself and then disappear altogether when I mouse over it.

To fix the problem, I have restored my computer to an earlier date, run several scans with McAfee and deleted all of my private data through the mozilla tool. Also, I have done a disk cleanup. Just today, I downloaded and ran Malwarebytes, and it found 3 things in my registry that it didn't like, so they were removed. This is the log:

Ok. Here is my systemlook scan, but dds would not download. The browser screen just showed up white when I clicked the DDS link, and after a few seconds it said it was done loading at the bottom left. The download window never popped up, and I don't see dds on my desktop either. I did go back and fix the link from my first post.

I still can't believe you do this. I feel like I owe you some homebrew. We can discuss that later.
Thanks again.
Hi nbake,

I feel like I owe you some homebrew. We can discuss that later

After we resolve your problem. ;)

There is one strange file showing. We'll try to get a scan on it.

We need some file informantion
  • Make sure to use Internet Explorer for this
  • Please go to VirSCAN.org FREE on-line scan service
  • Copy and paste the following file path, into the "Suspicious files to scan" box on the top of the page:

    c:\program files\n

  • Click on the Upload button
  • If a pop-up appears saying the file has been scanned already, please select the ReScan button.
  • Once the Scan is completed, click on the "Copy to Clipboard" button. This will copy the link of the report into the Clipboard.
  • Paste the contents of the Clipboard in your next reply.

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. Note: If you are having difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, or are unsure as to what programs need to be disabled, please refer to the information available through this link : How to Disable your Security Programs
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

[external image: Posted Image]

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[external image: Posted Image]

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

Notes:

1.Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
3. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you – please tell your helper.
4. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

Please post back with
  • Virus Scan results
  • Combofix log
  • new HJT log

Thanks
So I'm having trouble getting Combofix to work. The 2nd link worked and I downloaded it to my desktop, but when I click on it a load bar appears and when it gets to the end nothing happens. I hope that makes sense. Because I couldn't close McAfee in the system tray, I disabled script scanning, system guard, virus protection, and spyware protection manually before trying combofix, to no avail. When I moused over McAfee in the tray, it disappeared. If I go into the task manager is there a process I can shut down to be sure McAfee isn't on?
Hi Nbake,

This one certainly is fighting back. It may be more than your McAfee that's causing problems. We'll give it a go in safe mode. What version of McAfee do you have?

First though

Download ERUNT from http://aumha.org/downloads/erunt-setup.exe Here and save it to your desktop,

  • Double click erunt-setup.exe to install the program
  • Follow the prompts, and then uncheck Create NTREGOPT desktop icon at the Additional Tasks screen.
  • Click No when you are prompted about creating an ERUNT entry in the startup folder.
  • At the next screen, uncheck Show documentation and check Launch ERUNT
  • If ERUNT doesn't start by itself, launch it from the desktop shortcut.
  • At the configuration screen, make sure all 3 checkboxes are checked
  • Click Ok to run the backup process
  • When prompted, click YES to create a new folder.
  • Progress bars will show backup status.
  • A confirmation window will popup when complete. Click OK to close

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
  • Choose your usual account.
Once in safe mode try running combofix again.

    Thanks
Hey oldman960, Thanks for your continued patience. I've been working some strange hours and haven't had much time to treat my computer. I downloaded erunt and did a backup of my registry. I rebooted in safemode and tried to run combofix but it failed again. It acted like it was loading with the load bar filling up. When it was done an hourglass flashed by the cursor a few times, but nothing happened after this. I noticed in the task manager that svchost.exe is in there 7 times. Is that normal? This was when I didn't have anything else open. Thanks again. nbake
Hi Nbake,

No problem with the hours of work.

Does the combofix window stay on the screen, or does it disappear? How long did you wait?

svchost is related to several processes so 7 may or may not be normal.

Let's try it this way. Delete the copy of combofix you have from your desktop and download a new one. Make sure it's on your desktop.

We will use this command to run combofix so copy and paste it into a notepade. Save it your desktop.

"%userprofile%\desktop\combofix.exe" /killall

Boot into safe mode.

Click the Start button (lower left of your screen), click run.

Copy and paste the command you saved into the run box and click OK.

Any luck?
Yay, combofix worked in safe mode after redownloading it! But boo for me because I didn't have it install the windows recovery console.

Anyway, here is the log:

I hope I didn't screw anything up by not getting the recovery console. I am pumped that combofix worked though.

cheers!

nbake
Hi Nbake, Combofix nabbed a file, I'm not sure if it's the one that was causing the problems. If you want to install the recovery console, see if combofix will run in normal windows. You will have to disable McAfee first. If you tell me the version I may be able to give you the instructions to disable it. Post the log if it works. Let me know how your computer is now. Thanks
Oldman960,

Combofix worked and I installed the recovery program.

Surfing the net, everything seems to be back in order. The links I click on actually send me to the pages they represent. Woohoo. Also, the McAfee symbol in the system tray is staying put. What else should I be looking out for? Should I do a McAfee scan to see if it finds anything?

Here is the combofix log:

Hi Nbake,

Good job. With todays infections having the Recovery Console installed is a very good strategy.

McAfee has probably found all it's going to find. An online scan would be much better.

But first something to consider.

I see that Viewpoint is installed. Viewpoint, Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player are Viewpoint components which are installed as a side effect of installing other software, most notably AOL and AOL Instant Messenger (AIM). Viewpoint Manager is responsible for managing and updating Viewpoint Media Player’s components. You can disable this using the Viewpoint Manager Control Panel found in the Windows Control Panel menu. By selecting Disable auto-updating for the Viewpoint Manager – the player will no longer attempt to check for updates. Anything that is installed without your consent is suspect. Read what Viewpoint says and make your own decision.

To provide a satisfying consumer experience and to operate effectively, the Viewpoint Media Player periodically sends information to servers at Viewpoint. Each installation of the Viewpoint Media Player is identifiable to Viewpoint via a Customer Unique Identifier (CUID), an alphanumeric identifier embedded in the Viewpoint Media Player. The Viewpoint Media Player randomly generates the CUID during installation and uses it to indicate a unique installation of the product. A CUID is never connected to a user's name, email address, or other personal contact information. CUIDs are used for the sole purpose of filtering redundant information. Each of these information exchanges occurs anonymously.

Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is often installed without user's approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad". This may change, read Viewpoint to Plunge Into Adware
It is STRONGLY recommended that you remove the Viewpoint products; however, decide for yourself. To uninstall the Viewpoint components (Viewpoint, Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player):

You will need to use Internet Explorer for this scan.
*Note
It is recommended to disable onboard antivirus program and antispyware programs while performing scans so there are no conflicts and it will speed up scan time.
Please don't go surfing while your resident protection is disabled!
Once the scan is finished remember to re-enable your antivirus along with your antispyware programs.

Instructions for McAfee

You can turn off real-time virus protection temporarily, and then
specify when it resumes. You can automatically resume
protection after 15, 30, 45, or 60 minutes, when your computer
restarts, or never.

1 Open the Computer & Files Configuration pane.
How?

1. On the left pane, click Advanced Menu.
2. Click Configure.
3. On the Configure pane, click Computer & Files.
2 Under Virus protection, click Off.
3 In the dialog box, select when to resume real-time scanning. (I suggest restart)
4 Click OK.

Please go to Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.
  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions.
  • You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button
    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
    • Archives
    • Mail databases
  • Click on My Computerr under Scan.
