Hello All,

I am a newbie and have been throwing cr@p at the wall thus far with very little success. I happened on this forum and hope I can give you enough information to help me fix this problem.

Problem is that Google/Yahoo search does not function because McAfee (being provided with Comcast Cable Internet) indicates infection as follows:

"McAfee has automatically blocked and removed a Trojan.

About this Trojan
Detected: Generic!Artemis (Trojan), Generic!Artemis (Trojan)
Location: C:\WINDOWS\system32\setup_u.exe"

Browser window then closes. This started on Saturday but the message was different. Instead of Generic!Artemis, I was getting "Lando". Changed to the above yesterday or this morning.

As mentioned above, I have thrown carp** at the wall including:

- Updating Windows (sp3)
- Updating Office 2003 (IE7 won't fully update)
- Updated Java
(Obviously, this all should have been done prior to having a problem but…..what are you going to do?)

Scanned with:

- McAfee (both installed and from web-site)
- Ad Aware
- Malwarebytes (1.35)
- A-Squared
- Sypbot 1.6.2
- Symantec (on line version)

I have received very few "hits" if you will. I will post the Malwarebytes log and A-Squared log along with the HJT log. I tried turning off Restore to no avail. I have also tried scanning in safe mode. Other items of potential interest:

- When I boot, C:ProgramFile/Common (not Common Files) explorer folder opens - the folder shows empty. Note that the one Trojan that was "found" by Malware (and shown in the log below was for this area). While it appears empty, the folder still opens.
- Sometimes when I go to reboot, I get a dialogue box showing "App.bl87yElQuTvEqlK4yz4YZQ.6 is not responding" as the machine closes down.

It maynot seem like much but not being able to search effectively is really hampering the usefulness of the computer and it concerns me as there is obviously a security breach.

I read at one forum where the Lando thing was working by dumping a fake audio driver file into a folder and then pointing it to that file during startup which then hi-jacks the google searches. I was able to find what appeared to be the real audio folder but could not find the "fake" one and I don't know enough about this to "undo" the redirect anyways! On top of this, I'm not sure it's even Lando now - since McAfee is calling it Generic!Artemis.

Anyways, any insight that I could use to work through this would be very much appreciated. There is a lot of junk on this computer and cleaning some of that up may also help but I need to figure out where to start.

Thanks in advance.

Steve

DO NOT use any TOOLS such as Combofix, MBAM, SmitfraudFix, Vundofix, or HijackThis fixes without supervision.
Doing so could make your pc inoperatible and could require a full reinstall of your OS, losing all your programs and data.

Stay with this topic until I give you the all clean post.

You might want to print these instructions out.

I suggest you do this:

Double-click My Computer.
Click the Tools menu, and then click Folder Options.
Click the View tab.
Uncheck "Hide file extensions for known file types."
Under the "Hidden files" folder, select "Show hidden files and folders."
Uncheck "Hide protected operating system files."
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.

Next:

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
Download - ATF Cleaner»

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.

(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser
To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)

It's normal after running ATF cleaner that the PC will be slower to boot the first time.

Next:

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. Note: If you are having difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, or are unsure as to what programs need to be disabled, please refer to the information available through this link : Protective Programs

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

Note: Combofix will run without the Recovery Console installed.

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[external image: Posted Image]

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.
"copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread as well.

Notes:

1.Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
3. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you – please tell your helper.
4. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

Give it atleast 20-30 minutes to finish if needed.

Please don't attach the scans / logs, use "copy/paste".

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Thanks for the assistance. Two things: 1. I am having trouble disabling the SB Teatimer. I can follow the first part of the instructions (unchecking in the Resident section) but I don't seem to see the TeaTime box I am supposed to uncheck in the System Startup List…I tried to copy the files to paste here but can't seem to do it. Am I missing it? 2. I would prefer not to disable auto-run if possible. I've got kids and autorun really helps with not having to handhold all the time! Is there a way to allow for it or re-enable it once we're done? Thanks again
Actually, now that I think about it, I don't think SB runs at startup on this machine so maybe that's why I'm not seeing the file in the Startup area….. So, I guess if there is some way to keep or re-enable to autorun settings afterwards, I'm good to go. Thanks
Sorry for the multiple posts. I went ahead with Combofix because I decided it's more important to clean this up than worrying about the autorun feature.

When CF runs, the box shows up on the screen for about 10 seconds, the green indicator moves over and then the whole thing disappears and there does not appear to be any further action. No .txt file is created that I can find and the internet connection is not interrupted.

I think all Firewalls, AV and malware screens are disabled. I'm not getting any notification that it isn't.

Final note on something that has changed since the original post (not sure exactly when it changed). When McAfee is enabled, it is no longer giving me a Trojan warning. My google searches function but I am redirected pretty consistently (not always) to other non-relevant links.

Since there has been a change. I have posted a new HJT file.

Awaiting further instructions

Thanks

  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.

    Next:

Please do not delete anything unless instructed to.

NOTE: worksnow is actually Combofix renamed so user is able download and run Combofix

    Download worksnow from HERE:

    * IMPORTANT !!! Save worksnow to your Desktop

    • Double click on worksnow & follow the prompts.

Note: worksnow will run without the Recovery Console installed.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Thanks for continuing to work with me. When I click run and enter "Combofix /u" and click ok, I get "Windows can not find 'Combofix'. Please make sure you spelled the file name correctly. To search for a file….." Should I see this or something else?
Ok. This time, it opened a blue screen, updated itself, restarted itself, blue screen closed, Combofix dialogue box showed up for a few seconds, went green, then closed with no appreciable other activity, and no Combofix.txt in C:. There is a Worksnow folder with a bunch of files in it but the only .txt file is a version file which contains only this "09-04-01.01 3067000 MANDATORY 09-02-12.01"
1.Click Start > Settings > Control Panel. 2.Next, open Add/Remove Programs and remove if listed: Ad-Aware / adwatch Windows Defender Reboot and try it again
Did that. Same result as the first time I ran Combofix. Dialogue box comes up, goes green, disappears and then nothing. I removed McAfee (which wasn't updating anymore) and SpyBot, rebooted again, tried again with same result.

Close ALL windows and browsers except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

Delete these Files if listed:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\mst120.dll

Reboot and "copy/paste" a new HijackThis log file into this thread.

Also please describe how your computer behaves at the moment.
Deleted Viewpoint and Viewpoint Manager. Ran scan - found all but the last one (023) which looks like the Viewpoint Manager so perhaps that was removed when I removed the programs.

There was no mst120.dll file under C:\Windows\system32 but there are two under:

C:\Windows\ServicePackFiles\i386 and
C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Dowload\dd9ab5193501484cf5e6884fa1d22f9e

There is also an MST120.DL_ at C\Windows\I386

Should I delete any or all of these?

I rebooted and scanned with results following. As for how computer is behaving - the google search results still re-direct when clicked on. I generally get back to the original desired result by hitting the back button. Computer seems to be locking up more often out of the blue. I've had to hard reboot a few times in the past few days after a lockup. I don't have any AV or firewall (save what's in my router) running so I'm not really using it except to try to fix it.
