Your attention and assistance is greatly appreciated:

Microsoft/Windows Updates will not run – by going START->CONTROL PANEL->AUTOMATIC UPDATES and clicking on the WINDOWS UPDATE WEB SITE link navigates IE7 to Google (English).

I had McAfee VirusScan Plus, but this would not update either. McAfee was uninstalled, AVG Free 8.5 installed. AVG will not update.

IE7 frequently redirects to 'cow survey,' especially while I've been trying to navigate 'whatthetech.com' and other fixer forums. Whatever this machine has will also not let me download IE8.

ATF cleaner downloaded and runs.

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware downloads, setup runs, but fails at the update and start-up point.

  • Close all windows except Hijackthis and click Fix Checked
  • Click Yes when prompted
  • Close HijackThis.

Download ComboFix from one of these locations:
Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

VERY IMPORTANT !!!
Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

* IMPORTANT - Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link here
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

[external image: Posted Image]

  • Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

[external image: Posted Image]
  • Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.
Notes:
1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.
3. ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making I-E the default browser.
4. Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CD, floppy and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you – please advise.
5. CF disconnects your machine from the internet. The connection is automatically restored before CF completes its run. If CF runs into difficulty and terminates prematurely, the connection can be manually restored by restarting your machine.

Please make sure you include the combo fix log in your next reply as well as describe how your computer is running now
ComboFix installed Microsoft Windows Recovery Console then got to a point where it gave me a 'Rootkit !!' warning which said something about rootkit activity and that CF had to reboot the machine before proceeding. The 'Rootkit !!' window advised me to write down the following two files because they may be needed later: C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\gaopdxltmskxtowquygukwkiraboasylwrrtqx.sys C:\WINDOWS\system32\gaopdxvomwgpppkbcnujcylbgfhxxcottakhly.dll On reboot, CF automatically started, but gave me a warning that AVG had to be disabled before clicking the 'OK' button. This is where I hit a snag and defer to you before moving on: To disable AVG, I closed the CF window (hope I didn't cause a potential problem). After closing CF, the machine continued its boot-up to where I could disable AVG. Once AVG was disabled (exited out of), I clicked the 'OK' button from the CF warning dialogue box. CF did not continue on its own. Because of your Note #2 in green, I am unsure how to proceed, please advise. Note that AVG is currently not running, nor could I find an option within AVG to disable it from starting when Windows starts. Thank you!
To disable AVG 8
  • Please open the AVG 8 Control Center, by right clicking on the AVG 8 icon on task bar.
  • Click on Tools.
  • Select Advanced Settings.
  • In the left hand pane, scroll down to "Resident Shield".
  • In the main pane, deselect the option to "Enable Resident Shield."

Start Combofix again and let it complete a run - click OK if it complains about AVG again, to allow combofix to run.

Post back the results

Thank-you

CB
ComboFix returned an empty log.txt. Windows update says the machine is up to date. AVG seems to have updated, but I have not run a scan. Let me know what to do next. Thanks again!
Hi,

ComboFix returned an empty log.txt.

Something is interfering with Combofix so we need to try a different tool.

Please do the following:

Download Dr.Web CureIt to the desktop:
  • Doubleclick the drweb-cureit icon to start the program.
  • press start
  • Allow the program to run the initial express scan
  • This will scan the files currently running in memory. If something is found, click the YES button when it asks you if you want to cure it. This is only a short scan.
Note: A pop up may appear during this phase suggesting you purchase their program - click the X at the top right corner of this pop-up to close it.
  • Once the short scan has finished, check the Complete scan box on the left side, even if nothing was found on the initial scan.
  • Then click the small green arrow button on the right under the Dr.Web Antivirus picture to start the complete scan. (This scan will take several hours)
  • During this complete scan - if Dr.Web finds an infection a window will pop up requesting your attention. Select the Cure button.
    • Note:(If the file cannot be cured, Dr.Web will automatically delete the file)
  • Once the scan is complete, on the menu bar, click file and choose report list.
  • Save the report to your desktop. The report will be called DrWeb.csv
  • Note:this report will need to be renamed to Dr.Web.txt in order to post it on the forum.
  • Close Dr.Web Cureit.
  • Please post the Dr.Web.txt report in your next reply
In my last reply, I should have noted that AVG's Resident Shield was enabled after ComboFix returned the empty log file and is currently enabled, do I need to disable this before running DrWeb-Cureit?

Hi, That cleared out a couple of things, but I don't see what is preventing Malwarebytes Antimalware from running. Please open the program again and try to run it…. Advise if you are able to run it this time. Please also open HJT Run a scan and save a log file post the fresh HJT log back here

Hi, Not sure if you saw my previous post as we posted at the same time. See if malwarebytes will now run and post a fresh HJT log Thanks CB
Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware ran; mbam-log, and HJT log and startuplist follow.

I'll be out of town (without this machine) for the next 1.5 to 2 days; if I remember correctly, there is a 5-day no-(significant)-action limit – please let me know this won't be a problem.

Hi,

Can you advise if you are having any other issues…

I'd like for you to run this next online scan to check for remnants or anything that might be hidden.
The below scan can take up to an hour or longer, please be patient.

*Note
It is recommended to disable onboard antivirus program and antispyware programs while performing scans so no conflicts and to speed up scan time.
Please don't go surfing while your resident protection is disabled!
Once scan is finished remember to re-enable resident antivirus protection along with whatever antispyware app you use.

Please do a scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner or from here
http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner

Note: If you are using Windows Vista, open your browser by right-clicking on its icon and select 'Run as administrator' to perform this scan.

  • Click on the Accept button and install any components it needs.
  • The program will install and then begin downloading the latest definition files.
  • After the files have been downloaded on the left side of the page in the Scan section select My Computer.
  • This will start the program and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while, so be patient and let it run. (At times it may appear to stall)
  • Once the update is complete, click on My Computer under the green Scan bar to the left to start the scan.
    • Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.
    • Do NOT be alarmed by what you see in the report. Many of the finds have likely been quarantined.
  • Once the scan is complete, click on View scan report To obtain the report:
  • Click on: Save Report As
  • Next, in the Save as prompt, Save in area, select: Desktop
  • In the File name area, use KScan, or something similar In Save as type, click the drop arrow and select: Text file [*.txt]
  • Then, click: Save
  • Please post the Kaspersky Online Scanner Report in your reply.
