hi i was referred here by your malware people, and they detected no malware but im still experiencing problems…Ive tried every antivirus scan out there-the problem first arose with blue screen KERNAL_INPAGE_DATA_ERROR or something, and sometimes it would give the cause of the ntfs.sys file (something like that). Blue screen hasn't happened in a couple times..it started more into a just straight reboot, or rarely it would feel overheated and shut down and not start up..till i took the battery out for 15seconds. The only virus I could find was through AVG Antivirus and it said I have rdpwd.sys infected in a rootkit and it is hidden..said it was in the system32/drivers folder. Ive tried everything to find and delete it. Not too many restarts now but deteriorating slowly…and a verrry slow pace. THanks for any help!
SORRY! followed everyone elses' directions but yours :pullhair: Ive got a laptop hp pavilion dv9000 its about 2 years old..1-2years. Windows vista premium service pack 1…going to update now. processor:amd turion™ 64 X2 mobile technology 1.60Hz 1GB RAM 32-bit OS I experienced the problem 1-2 weeks before today. Started i think actually when i got the avg antivirus I dont know it was something…I was running bitcomet but got rid of it…had it for 2 years dont think it would have killed me now. But yes now the end result of the computer is just very very slow in everything from opening a program to loading to anything. starting to check drivers & update with some hopeful help from malware person. i run firefox and IE but use firefox mainly. no games just like 60 GB free on the Harddrive
Hi Sorry to hear of the problems with your machine. Do you have a System Restore Point that you could set your machine back to…….? to a time just before the problem started? Start>All programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Restore>Continue>choose a different restore point…and follow on screen directions Regards paws
i have the device manager open…not sure if a driver update/software update would fix something…but instead of checking each one I would like to know which ones could possibly help
You need to do your preliminary work first. :)

ntfs.sys failure might suggest a file system problem. In Windows Vista, click start. Under the programs section look for the accessories folder. When you find accessories look for the Command prompt option. RIght-click command prompt and select Run as Administrator. Now, when the command prompt opens, type chkdsk /r and press ENTER. You will probably be asked ifyou want to schedule a scan on your next reboot. Please tell it yes, and reboot your computer.

Be patient for the chkdsk to run, it will take quite a while. Pay attention for any bad clusters that the program might be finding.

Its a laptop so you are much more likely to be suffering from bad sectors on the hard drive. My estimate would be about 25% likely.
The fact that you suggest it may feel hot, also makes it necessary that you take a can of compressed air and blow out the cooling fans and heatsink in your laptop. You can do this by blowing the compressed air into the air ducts that are usually located on rear, sides, and bottom of your laptop. Laptop's are terrible for getting plugged up and over heating. Especially if you're a smoker or use the laptop while it sits on your carper or bed. (Which, by the way, a laptop should NEVER sit on a soft surface like a bed or the floor. You WILL overheat it.)
didnt want to do anything i dont know so it says… the type of file system is ntfs. cannot lock current drive chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts? y/n
sorry! didnt understand ur whole thing but am restarting to check it and will blow dust-off (think that is compressed air) on the fans which sounds very cool–never thought of that
Yes, dust-off will do the trick.. However, you don't blow the air only on the fans. You have to blow the dust-off through where the fans exhaust at. They usually pull air in from the bottom, and blow it out the sides or back. If you look in that small section you will see what appears to be like a copper radiator. You have to blow the compressed air through that so that anything plugging it up is blown back out through the fan inlets on the bottom. I must warn that laptops that have not had this done in a long time, or are very dirty can actually be made worse by doing this. What happens is that the heatsinks become so plugged up that when you blow them out "chunks" of dirt/hair actually fall into the fan and stop the fan all together. These laptops have to be taken a part to be cleaned properly. Regular maintenance on your laptop with compressed air will prevent this from ever happening. Your laptop is running WIndows Vista so I assume it is less than two years old, and probably not that bad.
ran the check disk..it brought up a black screen for literally a split second…said it was clean then started up as normal..
Ha! i dont know if that is supposed to be fast acting…im willing on anything and I did spray the right place (was crossing fingers) and it started to sound as if the *fan started making a wurring noise, of course frightening me, but now the laptop seems somewhat quieter/COOLER!
Yes, a good sign that you are blowing air through the right locations is that the fan will spin at high speeds making that whirring noise. If the cooling fins are plugged up then you will also see a lot of dust come out while you are blowing it out.
As far as chkdsk goes, are you sure you typed chkdsk /r?

Hmm.. I don't believe it should have done that under any circumstances with that /r switch.

Lets try this:

Follow the information at the link above to use the GUI version of chkdsk. Make sure you check both "check disk options" (automatically fix file system errors, and scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors). This is where you will deviate from the instructions at the above link.
